Abstract

Findings

When it comes to identifying key factors to organizational success, leadership is invariably uppermost in many minds. It is thus hardly surprising that firms afford leadership development as the top priority. Expert in the field Morgan McCall perfectly articulated its importance when commenting on the imprudence of leaving leadership development to chance. Leadership development comes in an array of shapes and sizes. Mentoring, action learning, case studies, job assignments and experiential learning are just some of the methodologies commonly utilized. Transfer of knowledge, team building, raising self-awareness and increasing the ability to interact with others are core objectives typically pursued.

Findings

Heightened competition has become the norm for most organizations operating in the current business climate. Globalization is often cited as a key reason for this. The seemingly incessant emergence of new technologies is another. In the face of such developments, markets evolve accordingly. With firms facing increasingly tougher challenges, the spotlight on employees has intensified. The extent of technological advances means that work is no longer wholly defined by conventional boundaries of space and time. For many people, normal working hours have become something of an anachronism. The advent of the smartphone is especially significant in this respect. An increasing number of employees are now using these and other similar devices to routinely perform workplace duties in their own time.

Findings

Occupational hazards are an unfortunate way of life for workers in many industries. For some, the risk of serious injury or illness is considerable. More positive is the decline over recent decades in the number of such incidents reported. However, in Western nations the cost of injury or illness at work remains substantial. Statistics show that in European Union (EU) countries, it can range between 2.6 per cent and 3.8 per cent of GDP. Regulations and conditions within specific labor markets help determine where these costs are absorbed. There are wide variations across countries in terms of how injured employees are compensated during their time off work.

Findings

In numerous contexts, leadership ultimately determines whether success or failure will be the end result. Politics, business, and sport are just some of the domains that spring to mind. Effective leaders are able to galvanize their charges and raise performance levels to previously unattained heights. Or as Bill Bradley put it, leadership succeeds by “unlocking people’s potential to become better”. Few would argue with this description by the former basketball player-turned-USA senator. A recent high-profile industrial dispute aptly showcases the galvanizing effect of leadership.

Findings

Middle-age is regarded as a significant stage of life. It is typically either perceived as a time of crisis or an ideal opportunity for new beginnings. The common denominator is that major decisions are the norm on both sides of this particular debate. The issue is especially pertinent in the context of careers. Reaching a mid-career point often prompts individuals to evaluate current and past experiences and relationships in order to guide future direction.

Findings

Few topics are more divisive than religion. You would have to search hard to find another issue with the same unrelenting ability to polarize views. History books provide ample testimony to that fact. It is therefore hardly surprising to find religious freedom to be a major challenge in the workplace. Determining how, when and in what circumstances workers should be permitted to engage in religious expression is a conundrum facing many organizations. Granting such a freedom needs to be balanced against the needs and rights of other employee groups.

Findings

An old adage informs us that prevention is better than cure. These are wise words indeed. And such sentiments obviously apply within a wide variety of contexts, with working environments being no exception. Recent decades have witnessed growing importance attached to health in the workplace. Given the prevailing compensation culture in many societies, this development is not surprising. Firms naturally want to protect themselves as much as possible from the threat of health-related lawsuits. Complying with necessary regulations and safeguarding the welfare of employees should thus be high on the agenda. It clearly makes sense for organizations to adopt a proactive approach to these matters.

Findings

Addressing job boredom will be well down the list of priorities for most employers. Such indifference is ill-judged though. Damaging effects are likely and firms should be aware of that fact. Job boredom is often defined as a lack of interest in workplace tasks. Poor engagement guarantees that the employee involved will fail to properly utilize his or her capabilities. And since productivity takes an inevitable hit, the significance for companies is readily apparent.

Abstract

Findings

Intense competition and change are two defining characteristics of today’s business world. It is therefore critical that organizations have the requisite skills and knowledge needed to achieve performance and growth objectives. Learning is clearly vital in this respect. Companies must remain alert to the range of opportunities for key personnel to broaden their horizons and enhance their awareness and understanding of current and future issues. Recognition of this has led to growing acknowledgement of the important contribution of informal types of learning. Indications are that informal conversations with workplace colleagues are especially powerful in this respect.

Findings

A company's most valuable resource is its human capital. This fact is widely acknowledged. Talent retention should, therefore, be high on the agenda for any business hoping to enjoy sustainable success. It is crucially important to identify gifted individuals and nurture them in preparation for top management positions in the future. The present time is supposedly one where equality is greater than ever before. Reality is somewhat different though. Some things remain much more equal than others. Take company leadership, for instance. In many organizations, these roles are predominantly filled by men. Women are at best a minor presence.
