Abstract

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) increasingly view social entrepreneurship as means to expand their mission scope while simultaneously diversifying revenue streams and strengthening financial foundations. However, the pursuit of social entrepreneurial ventures often incites a tug-of-war phenomenon between the deep-rooted social welfare logic of the parent NPO and a newly evolving commercial logic at the subsidiary social enterprise (SSE). The present study seeks to understand how NPOs navigate such logic conflicts as they strive to become more entrepreneurial. Based upon case studies of two NPOs, we found divergence in organizational identity, legitimacy, and mission/vision between parent nonprofits and their SSEs as they struggled with a defining question: Are we a program or are we a business? Our research indicates that organizations reconcile such cognitive dissonance through four distinct processes: connecting, variegating, separating, and augmenting social welfare and commercial logic spheres. We, thus, contribute to the social entrepreneurship and nonprofit management literatures by illustrating ways in which noncommercial organizations may address issues of logic divergence when engaging in revenue-generating commercial activities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the hardness and elastic modulus on interfacial phases formed between Sn-3.5Ag solder and Ni-18 at. % W alloy film by nanoindentation. It has been found that a ternary amorphous Sn-Ni-W layer formed below Ni3Sn4 IMC at the interface. In this study, mechanical properties of the IMC formed between SA solder and Ni-18 at. % W film after six times reflows were performed by nanoindentation.

Design/methodology/approach

The characterization was carried at 25°C, and 100 indents were generated. The elastic modulus and hardness were investigated.

Findings

The results showed that hardness of Ni3Sn4 IMC was higher than amorphous Sn-Ni-W phase. A slight bigger indent was observed on the Sn-Ni-W layer compared with that on the Ni3Sn4 IMC. Lower topographical height in the Sn-Ni-W layer indicated that the Sn-Ni-W phase was softer compared with the Ni3Sn4 IMC. The lower hardness and soft Sn-Ni-W phase is significantly related to the amorphous structure that formed through solid-state amorphization.

Originality/value

There are no publications about the indentation on the interfacial between the Ni-W layer and the Sn-Ag solder.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to cover the recent (2010-2016) techniques for carrying out hardness evaluation on lead-free solders. Details testing configuration/design were compiled and discussed accordingly to each of the measurement techniques: Vickers microhardness, Brinell microhardness and nanoindentation.

Design/methodology/approach

A brief introduction on lead-free solders and the concept of hardness testing has been described at the beginning of the review. Equipment setup, capabilities, test configuration and outcomes were presented for each technique and discussed in parallel along with the case studies from selected articles.

Findings

Comparison, outcomes and insight regarding each of the methods were highlighted to observe the recent trends, scientific challenges, limitations and probable breakthroughs of the particular hardness testing methods.

Originality/value

The compilation of latest reports, technical setup plus with the critics and perception from the authors are the main key value in this review. This provides an in-depth understanding and guidance for conducting hardness evaluation on lead-free solders.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the role of marketing as a route to sustainability for social enterprises providing public services. It examines the tensions between the economic and social objectives, both of social enterprises and of marketing. It concludes by offering a new model of the role of marketing for sustainable social enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used the case study approach which included four cases. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the chief executives of each social enterprise. The cases were classified by age.

Findings

The paper demonstrates that while marketing potentially has much to offer in terms of organisational resilience for social enterprises, its application is currently undermined by its misunderstanding in practise within a “product-dominant” business logic. Despite this, the study finds a strong element of the unconscious application of marketing by social enterprises.

Originality/value

The implications of this are discussed in the context of the “public service-dominant” business logic that is currently emerging in public management, and recommendations are made for policy and practice as to how to enhance the contribution of marketing, both to sustainable social enterprises and to public services delivery.

Abstract

The purpose of this conceptual chapter is to analyze the current state of the astructural bias in symbolic interactionism as it relates to three inter-related processes over time: (1) the formalization of critiques of symbolic interactionism as ahistorical, astructural, and acritical perspectives; (2) an ahistorical understanding of early expressions of the disjuncture between symbolic interactionism and more widely accepted forms of sociological theorizing; and (3) persistent and widespread inattentiveness to past and present evidence-based arguments that address the argument regarding symbolic interactionism as an astructural, ahistorical, and acritical sociological perspective. The argument frames the historical development of the astructural bias concept in an historically and socially conditioned way, from its emergence through its rejection and ultimately including conclusions about contemporary state of the astructural bias as evidenced in the symbolic interactionist literatures of the last couple of decades. The analysis and argument concludes that the contemporary result of these intertwined historical and social conditioning processes is that the astructural bias myth has been made real in practice, and that the reification of the myth of an astructural bias has had the ruinous effect of virtually eradicating a vital tradition in the interactionist perspective which extends back to the earliest formulations of the perspective. As a result, a handful of suggestions that serve to aid in reclaiming the unorthodox structuralism of symbolic interactionism and the related interactionist study of social organization are provided in the conclusion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role service quality, satisfaction and commitment play in word of mouth (WOM) formation among adult learners in Singapore.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a quantitative survey of 165 adult students who were enrolled in part‐time undergraduate programmes at the Singapore Institute of Management, to examine the relationships of interest.

Findings

The impact service quality had on WOM formation was examined, with student satisfaction and commitment being modelled as mediators of this relationship. The results suggested functional service quality, rather than technical service quality, impacted on WOM formation, with student satisfaction playing an important mediating role. The study also showed that, although student satisfaction had a significant effect on both aspects of commitment (affective commitment and high‐sacrifice commitment), affective commitment led to WOM being given.

Research limitations/implications

The study examined adult learners enrolled in part‐time undergraduate management programmes. Younger, full‐time students’ WOM may not be impacted in the same way.

Practical implications

Having a better understanding of WOM formation helps education institution managers focus on the “right” antecedents, which are functional service quality, satisfaction and affective commitment. The results also suggest broader responsibilities for such managers. If their goal is to increase student enrolments, in which WOM plays an important role, the management of student services is crucial and should be seen as a marketing tool, as well as an administrative process.

Originality/value

The relationships examined have not been investigated previously in an educational environment and the results suggest education managers need to understand them as they plays crucial roles in determining WOM, which plays a significant role in determining students’ educational preferences. If processes and strategies can be developed that improve service quality, satisfaction, commitment and WOM will all be positively influenced.
