Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to combine triboelectric nanogeneration technology with ball bearing structure to achieve energy collection and fault monitoring.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, according to the rotation mode of ball bearings, the freestanding mode of triboelectric nanogeneration is selected to design and manufacture a novel triboelectric nanogeneration device Rolling Ball Triboelectric Nanogenerator (RB-TENG) which combines rotary energy collection with ball bearing fault self-sensing.

Findings

The 10,000s continuous operation experiment of the RB-TENG is carried out to verify its robustness. The accurate feedback relationship between the RB-TENG and rotation velocity can be demonstrated by the fitting comparison between the theoretical and experimental electrical signal periods at a certain time. By comparing the output electrical signals of the normal RB-TENG and the rotor spalling RB-TENG and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) balls with different degrees of wear at 500 r/min, it can be concluded that the RB-TENG has an ideal monitoring effect on the radial clearance distance of bearings. The spalling fault test of the RB-TENG stator inner ring and rotor outer ring is carried out.

Originality/value

Through coupling experiments of rotor spalling fault of the RB-TENG and PTFE balls fault with different degrees of wear, it can be seen that when rotor spalling fault occurs, balls wear has a greater impact on the normal operation of the RB-TENG, and it is easier to identify. The fault self-sensing ability of the RB-TENG can be obtained, which is expected to provide an effective scheme for monitoring the radial wear clearance distance of ball bearings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to detect the bolt loosening under conditions of impact loading with a low-cost self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator sensor.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, an Al/PTFE-based triboelectric nanogenerator (AP-TENG) is used as a sensor. A pendulum impact device and a force hammer were used to apply the impact loads. The bolt status and the applied torque can be monitored under impact loading conditions by using the output voltage results of the AP-TENGs.

Findings

The output voltage results of the current AP-TENG sensor under five different bolt torques, i.e. from 0.5 to 2.5 N m, were measured. The measurements revealed that a thicker buffer layer significantly contributed to the generation of higher voltages. Besides, the AP-TENG was also used to light ten commercial green LEDs in series, and the brightness of the LEDs was high enough even for the daytime, which showed that it can be used as the alarm device. In addition, a sudden loose test was also carried out, and the obvious voltage spikes can be seen without the external impact. The force hammer impact tests have expanded the application scope of the AP-TENG in the bolt loosening detection.

Originality/value

The bolt loosening monitoring is important and useful for the safe operation. The application of TENG technology for detecting bolt loosening remains relatively unexplored. In addition, ten commercial green LEDs can be driven by the AP-TENG sensor, which can be used for the early warning of the bolted loosening status.

Abstract

Purpose

The imperative for sustainable energy systems is increasingly pressing as the world transitions toward renewable energy sources. Among these, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as a viable option for wind energy harvesting. However, they face significant challenges, including material durability under varying wind conditions; the intricacy of material selection and performance; and the trade-off between wear resistance and triboelectric efficiency. This study aims to address the above issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Herein, a mode-switch TENG (MS-TENG) was designed to overcome these limitations and serve as a self-powered energy solution for Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks. The MS-TENG incorporates a multi-stage functional layer and an automatic mode-switching mechanism between contact and non-contact operation, thereby enhancing both efficiency and durability.

Findings

It is demonstrated that the MS-TENG achieves a maximum instantaneous output power of 0.069 mW with minimal mechanical wear, effectively capturing wind energy. Its capability to charge capacitors and power a range of electronic devices, such as temperature and humidity sensors, electronic watches and water immersion guards, underscores its practical utility across diverse settings.

Originality/value

This research situates the MS-TENG as a pioneering technology in smart sensor applications for future energy-harvesting endeavors, optimizing energy acquisition under fluctuating wind conditions and reinforcing the sustainability of IoT networks.

Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this research is to identify Tuah Teng fishing techniques in food security to facing ASEAN economic community (AEC) and to give description about Tuah Teng fishing techniques and its relationship with food security of coastal society in face of AEC era.

Design/Methodology/Approach – The method of sampling is by snowball technique, because every generation of fisherman community has used this since a long time ago. The method of analysis is done by descriptive qualitative based on primary data by observation and secondary data from the literature study.

Findings – The technique of fishing Tuah Teng is done by attracting the fish relying on simple equipment consisting of stereofoam, plastic cans, vats with cement and rubber wheel, and fish bait from dried coconut leaves tied to the rope. Availability of fish can support the food security. During season, the prices of fish can be very cheap or even just distributed free to the community.

Research Limitations/Implications – Food security in the era of ASEAN economic community encourages food self-sufficiency and ultimately realizes food sovereignty. The community no longer imports the fish, even they can export because the needs of fish in domestic has been fulfilled.

Practical Implications – The Office of Marine and Fisheries (DKP) has provided assistance in the form of radar and a more modern computer to be able to detect the fish. But fishermen still survive with this traditional method.

Originality/Value – This research identifies Tuah Teng as a traditional of fishing technique in Aceh Utara.

Abstract

Purpose

Online games are highly popular Internet applications. Some games enable players to save game progress and accumulate experiences or changes to avatars during gameplay, whereas some other games do not, requiring players to restart from the beginning each time. That is, games differ in avatar accumulability. However, we do not know whether games should be designed to permit avatar accumulability or not and how it affects players’ gameplay experience and therefore game outcomes, indicating gaps. Research addressing these gaps can inform game makers in designing games that effectively strengthen their players’ game loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

We used social identity theory (SIT) to construct a theoretical model. To test this model, three waves of survey data were gathered from the same 778 participants.

Findings

These findings uniquely indicate that avatar accumulability fosters avatar identification and increases players’ focused immersion, thus increasing players’ loyalty.

Practical implications

Game providers could include game features that enable players to accumulate their avatars’ in-game skins, levels, items (weapons and equipment) and experience points. This accumulability can help strengthen players’ game loyalty.

Originality/value

Overall, our study extends SIT by adding a new trigger (avatar accumulability) and two novel consequences of avatar identification (image protection and focused immersion) in avatar-related systems (games or gamified systems). The new trigger offers an actionable means to apply SIT, while the novel consequences verify the value of applying SIT to study online games.

Abstract

Purpose – This study focuses on the relationship between local governments and public sector joint ventures (JVs). Public sector JVs are separate administrative entities that undertake public service activities on behalf of local governments. The aim of this study is to examine the vertical management control packages that are used by local governments to control the relationship with their public sector JVs.

Design/methodology/approach – Two case studies have been conducted in two public sector JVs, owned jointly by more than 20 local governments. The analysis of the two cases is informed by an integrated conceptual framework describing how transactional and relational factors influence control, trust, and risk in the context of public sector JVs.

Findings – The case studies provide a nuanced understanding of the interplay between the vertical management control packages, trust between the parents and the public sector JVs, and risks as perceived by the local governments. The case findings not only reveal how local governments struggle with adequate outcome control but also highlight how and why they rely on behavioral control. A related finding is that while the probability of poor business performance does not have a significant impact on the design of the vertical control packages, the social impact of failure has the potential to create a sense of urgency with regard to changes in the design of vertical management control packages.

Originality/value – This study adds to the literature on interorganizational relationships by providing insight into the use of vertical management control packages in the specific, but relevant, setting of public sector JVs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a friction-type energy-harvesting device based on magnetic liquids (MLs). This MLs energy-harvesting device combines MLs with a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), reducing the friction thermal effect to improve the conversion efficiency and working frequency band.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the motion equation of the MLs is calculated using the Bernoulli and fluid continuity equations. Second, the sloshing process of an ML in a container is simulated using the finite element simulation method, and the magnetic field distribution of the permanent magnet in the MLs is calculated. Then, the output characteristic of the ML-TENG is deduced theoretically, and the influencing factors of the output voltage are analyzed. Finally, the output voltage of the MLs energy-harvesting device was tested experimentally, and the influence of the magnetic field on the output voltage was tested.

Findings

This study proposes a vibration energy harvesting device based on MLs. The output voltage of the device was obtained through simulation and experimental tests, and the effect of the magnetic field on the output voltage was obtained.

Originality/value

This study provides a method to convert vibration energy into electrical energy using the magnetic response and fluid characteristics of MLs, and the availability of the device is verified by simulation and experiment. This energy-harvesting device exhibits less loss and a more sensitive response.

Abstract

Purpose

Relational cohesion theory posits that relational cohesion helps build relationships among communication partners, implying that users would expect a growth in relations or making more friends in the future. However, little is known about expectancy of a better future state of relations, i.e. expectancy of relational growth, and its impact on users' continued engagement in online communication. Our study extends relational cohesion theory to explain how expectancy of relational growth impacts online gamer loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

We test the framework using structural equation modeling to analyze a large sample of 1,429 responses from online gamers.

Findings

We find that expectancy of relational growth is positively related to norm compliance and relational cohesion, which are further related to network convergence and interdependence, fostering online gamer loyalty.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to relational cohesion theory by identifying novel sources of relational cohesion, i.e. expectancy of relational growth and norm compliance. Hence, game providers should create gamers' expectancy of growth in online relationships. Such expectancy could motivate continued gaming communication, even when gamers are not satisfied with the current state of online relationships. Moreover, we propose the new concept of expectancy of relational growth, which should have a strong impact on online communication in various areas.

Abstract

Purpose

Flow, or total concentration with intrinsic enjoyment, has been recognized as being able to enhance online gamer loyalty. However, some gamers who experience flow do not exhibit strong loyalty, posing the vital research question asking for whom flow would not enhance loyalty. Limited knowledge on this issue may lead game providers to assume that flow is influential in strengthening loyalty among all gamers, thus leading to suboptimal resource allocation and reduced effectiveness in retaining gamers. The purpose of the paper is to examine how gaming experience and gaming intensity moderate the impact of flow on online gamer loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

In the paper, the hypotheses were tested using responses from 273 gamers.

Findings

The findings show that flow and gaming experience positively impact gamer loyalty. Gaming experience reduces the positive relationship between flow and gamer loyalty. However, gaming intensity does not reduce.

Practical implications

Game providers should focus on creating a flow experience to strengthen the loyalty of gamers with short-gaming experience. However, game providers should devise other means to strengthen loyalty among gamers with long-gaming experience.

Originality/value

The study challenged the assumption of flow theory, i.e. that flow always determines loyalty. Instead, the paper offers a moderator – gaming experience – which sets a boundary condition for this theory. Flow works well only among gamers with relatively short-gaming experience. The study also extended the literature on gaming experience by uniquely indicating its attenuating effect on the relation between flow and loyalty.

The national logistics policy report published by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Tourism in 2011 proposes to establish international logistics strategy teams in 10 different regions around Japan to satisfy the increasing demand for advance transportation infrastructure and stay competitive in Asia Pacific. The globalization of world economies creates many opportunities as well as challenges for international logistics companies to gain more business chances in this changing environment. The purpose of this paper is to improve service quality of international logistics companies and explores the quality function deployment in terms of quality evaluation method. The logistics service is particularly characterized by offering a series of transport solution and including other logistics activities. The major customers of the logistics services are the industrial clients. The customer satisfaction is key managerial mission since the competitiveness is a growing issue in this industry. The quality function deployment is one of the unique procedures to expose the requirements of customer and transform them into managerial tasks by cross correlation analysis between requirements and technical measures. The empirical study is performed to investigate service quality of the logistics industry by focusing on a group of leading logistics companies.
