Abstract

The phenomenon of the shift work culture is quite significant in academic library services, and to eliminate it entirely is too idealistic. In attempting to provide an effective service to users, libraries have to extend their closing time into the evenings. Continuing complaints from staff working shifts at the University of Ilorin Library may affect the level of service provided if the complaints are not addressed. This study gathers information about the views of the staff concerning shift duty, and how they cope with the problems caused by shift rotation. Using information gathered by the use of questionnaires and interviews, shift rotation is described together with the problems raised, and suggestions offered for ways to manage a vexing issue.

Abstract

Reports a study of staff opinion concerning job rotation at the University of Ilorin Library. Data were gathered using a questionnaire. It was found that the reaction to the possible introduction of job rotation was generally positive. It is suggested that the library manager should consider the introduction of a policy of job rotation policy in the library and indicates an approach that could be used when it is introduced.

Abstract

States that retroconversion is a major and costly undertaking for a library, and essential in a newly automated system. Setting parameters is an essential part of retroconversion. The parameters have to be set to meet the provisions in the modules in the TINLIB software (Novell netware 4.1) installed at the University of Ilorin Library. Discusses the essence of retroconversion, the problems and peculiarities identified at the meeting organized to consider parameters for the conversion.

Abstract

Effective and efficient services will be difficult to attain in an organisation where disharmony and grievances thrive ‐ be it between staff and management, or among the staff themselves. The paper examines the role of a library staff welfare committee in the running of a Nigerian university library, and the social services offered to its members. Discusses the history, issues that plagued the scheme, the reactivation process, and the election of a democratic welfare committee. Concludes that the study has provided answers to some management problems in the library, while it points out that members prefer to be directed by their elected leaders. Suggests that a close working relationship is needed between library management and the welfare committee.

Abstract

Most academic libraries in Nigeria have retained the traditional organisational structure based on two broad divisions – reader services and technical services. Observes that developments in academic libraries have made the conventional structure inadequate and less functional. Examines the inadequacies, using the University of Ilorin as an example. Proposes a function organisation structure which groups library activities into four main divisions – access services, information services, special collections and training activities. Advises on the implementation of restructuring and the barriers the libraries are likely to face. Suggests the formation of an overall steering committee, and functionally oriented task forces that will undertake the analysis of library activities for restructuring.

Abstract

Bureaucracy is usually associated with the negative consequences of large organisations such as “red tapeism”, unexplained delays, and general frustration. Max Weber assumed that the bureaucratic structure would always be the most effective approach. This study focused on how heads of libraries and practising librarians in selected libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria view bureaucracy within libraries using information obtained by means of a questionnaire and personal observation. It describes their views on the topic. The article concludes by calling on heads of libraries to begin to think more positively, at least with a view to creating a working environment that will de‐emphasise the strict compliance with bureaucratic values, particularly in Nigerian academic libraries.

Abstract

In order that librarians may achieve research success within the academic environment, a convenient working schedule equivalent to that of teaching colleagues is a sine qua non. To investigate this issue, a descriptive survey, including a questionnaire, was used to examine the opinions of selected academic librarians on the issue of flexible working hours, in order to establish whether present (inflexible) working arrangements have any effect on the publication output of librarians in Nigeria. The study revealed that the potential benefit of flexible working arrangements is widely accepted among academic libraries. The paper concludes by suggesting that a wider study be carried out that would seek the views of library directors or administrators in Nigeria on the implementation of this new working arrangement, in order to tackle a problematic issue for academic librarians.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to report on research that examined the perceptions of selected heads of Nigerian libraries about how gossip can assist in the management of libraries of all types. A survey was used to collect data from 40 heads of libraries in the south-west region of Nigeria. The questionnaire contained questions that related to the issues being investigated. The 30 responses (75%) received were processed, analyzed, and the results are presented herein. The study revealed that gossip has indeed helped library management in Nigeria. The heads of libraries reported that they derived some benefits from gossip which helped in decision making. Most respondents agreed that gossip might get out of hand, but said it should be monitored to be used as a positive tool in library management. While the study is limited to 30 libraries, it has applications to similar libraries across Nigeria, and even in other countries. This research provides a better understanding of the reasons why library managers and others should pay attention to gossip and to those behind it because of their influence. This study adds to the body of knowledge about gossip in libraries.

Abstract

Automated systems, like manual systems, will not be successful without adequate training and preparation on the part of the staff. Some problems will arise where adequate training is lacking. The article discusses the structure and organisation of on‐site training of staff in the use of TINLIB software at the University of Ilorin Library. Particular attention is paid to the content of the training, trainers and what the programme is out to achieve. The article discusses some pitfalls in the training exercise and offers suggestions for future training programmes.

Abstract

The paper discusses the objectives, implementation and the limitations of MIS in Nigerian Universities, using the University of Ilorin as an example. It examines the problems of developing an efficient and effective MIS in Nigerian Universities. Inadequate collection of data from students and staff and lack of cooperation from people concerned with the processing of data forms for the MIS form part of the major problems. The conclusions include suggestions for more information on student and staff, and external data that can be useful in strategic decision‐making.
