Abstract
Purpose
Corporate real estate (CRE) is a costly and risky asset in need of more rigorous evaluation methods to support strategic decision making for portfolio and asset management. Especially the indirect added value on organizational revenues is hard to quantify, while it is gaining importance. The purpose of this paper is to describe a quantitative technique that predicts office use as input for CRE management (CREM) decisions.
Design/methodology/approach
After a literature study to identify relevant aspects influencing office use in modern work environments, a Bayesian belief network (BN) is constructed from a large database of 80,907 observations of office use in three organizations in Belgium and the Netherlands. Next specific evidence from future scenarios of organizational change is entered to discuss the application of BN for CRE decision-making processes.
Findings
This study showed that the use of activity-based offices might be influenced by a complex network of office design variables and user characteristics. The use of the predicting possibilities of a BN model can help CRE managers identify employee behaviour inside their offices. That information is valuable input for future workplace decisions and strategic CREM activities.
Practical implications
This study provides CRE managers with a model to gain knowledge on office use to get a better grip on how to add value with activity-based office concepts. The results obtained through using such a model can help support decision making on their office layouts.
Originality/value
Bayesian BNs have not been used in this area of research before. This paper provides both academics and practitioners with valuable insights in the possibilities of this methodology for the field.

Abstract
China’s foreign aid efforts in Africa remain contentious. Chinese foreign aid tends to be different from “traditional” development assistance in that it frequently involves firms as the implementing agents of projects. Firms bring unique resources to public–private partnerships (PPPs) formed with government agencies, but their possible self-interested nature also gives rise to concerns over their development impact. Yet, on a larger scale, little is known about the characteristics of Chinese PPPs in foreign aid. Using project-level data available for 1,308 Chinese aid projects in 50 countries across Africa, the author characterizes the projects undertaken by firms and government agencies in a PPP and contrasts them to those executed by Chinese government agencies without firm involvement. This exploratory data analysis suggests that important differences apply, as Chinese PPPs tend to target different sustainable development goals (SDGs), work on the basis of distinct aid conditions, and implement projects that tend to be larger than those that are solely run by government agencies. Such observations raise important questions of an ethical, theoretical, and international nature, and warrant further research. The author develops a research agenda that aims at issues particularly important for business ethics scholars, organization theorists, and international business scholarship.

Changes in the educational environment regarding the teaching–learning process are required as a result of social, economic, and cultural transitions. In light of this, this chapter will discuss and examine the flipped classroom method’s qualities as well as potential applications for individualized higher education. A bibliometric review of the Scopus database would be done in order to fulfil the suggested goal, and a report on a flipped classroom’s implementation at a Brazilian university was also provided. It was discovered that the traits are pre-class activities, actions done in preparation for class, and postclass activities. This instructional approach can be utilized to motivate pupils in individualized instruction.

Abstract
Purpose
The authors investigate the implications of environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices of firms for the pricing of their credit default swaps (CDS). In doing so, the authors compare European and US firms and consider nonlinear and indirect effects. This complements the previous literature focusing on linear and direct effects using bond yields and credit ratings of US firms.
Design/methodology/approach
For this purpose, the authors apply fixed effects regressions on a comprehensive panel data set of US and European firms. Further, nonlinear and indirect effects are investigated utilizing quantile regressions and a path analysis.
Findings
The evidence indicates that higher ESG ratings mitigate credit risks of US and European firms from 2007 to 2019. The risk mitigation effect is U-shaped across ESG quantiles, which is consistent with opposing effects of growing stakeholder influence capacity and diminishing marginal returns on ESG investments. The authors further reveal a mediating indirect volatility channel that substantially amplifies the direct effect of ESG on credit risk. A one-standard-deviation improvement in ESG ratings is estimated to reduce CDS spreads of low, medium and high ESG firms by approximately 4%, 8% and 3%, respectively.
Originality/value
This is the first study to examine whether credit markets reflect regional differences between Europe and the US with regard to the ESG-CDS-relationship. In addition, this paper contributes to the existing literature by investigating differences in the response of CDS spreads across ESG quantiles and to study potential indirect channels connecting ESG and CDS spreads using structural credit risk variables.

Exploring a researchable topic and narrowing it down sufficiently to make it workable is a first task in any scientific research. This is particularly difficult when the researcher is a novice, because s(he) is unlikely to be properly aware of what the essential issues and the research question(s) in the field are. This article addresses the question of how to navigate a research topic for an academic project. The article is potentially of interest to novice researchers and researchers new to a field. Illustrating its argument by means of an example in the area of knowledge management, the article proposes a set of guidelines for narrowing down a research topic to workable size. A number of recommendations are made; by utilizing these recommendations to construct a navigation map, it is hoped that a researcher can use fully formulate research question(s). It can be argued that drawing such a navigation map is an art in which prospective researchers need to be trained.

Abstract
In this chapter, the authors analyze the relationship between academia, organization, and gender in Chile. In particular, the connection between academic practices, management, and hegemonic masculinity throughout the history of Chilean universities. The authors took a critical approach from the field of gender and organizational studies, shedding new light on a longstanding problem: gender-based violence in universities. The authors will discuss how the centrality of management in Chilean universities makes sense in a late and globally connected capitalist scenario, characterized by the introduction of managerialism and business logic in higher education. Consequently, the practice of management acquired a central and hegemonic status that articulates the rest of the academic practices, organizing them not only in terms of the hegemony of management but also in terms of male hegemony.

Abstract
Purpose
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic unveiled resilience deficits in supply chains. Scholars and practitioners aim to identify supply chain resilience (SCRES) measures suitable for this unique disruption; however, empirical evidence on a pandemic's specific characteristics, resulting challenges, and suitable countermeasures is scarce.
Design/methodology/approach
A single-case study on an automotive supply chain network (ASCN), including eight nodes, was conducted. Based on current research and interviews with 35 experts, characteristic pandemic challenges for the ASCN were identified. Moreover, promising SCRES measures were determined along the most prominent SCRES levers. The findings lead to five central propositions and advance organizational information processing theory in the context of SCRES.
Findings
This study’s results confirm unique pandemic characteristics along the supply chain disruption's duration, severity, propagation, and volatility. The resulting unprecedented challenges made the ASCN apply novel SCRES measures, particularly regarding collaboration and risk management culture. However, well-known visibility and flexibility strategies were also suitable. Overall, agility and collaboration measures showed the highest capacity to address characteristic pandemic challenges. A lack of preparedness impeded some measures' application, calling for enhanced proactive risk management following the pandemic.
Originality/value
This paper addresses several research calls by providing in-depth empirical evidence on hitherto conceptually researched pandemic characteristics, challenges, and suitable SCRES measures from a network perspective. The study uncovers the different perceptions of individual tiers, emphasizing the need to analyze supply chain disruptions from multiple angles.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled Conversational Agents (AICAs) on religious tourists’ experiences. It explores how AICA attributes influence religious tourists’ cognitive and affective states and how these evaluations, in turn, affect their memorable religious tourism experiences (MRTEs) and continuous use intentions of AICAs.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on the stimulus-organism-response model and the Technology Readiness Index, the authors propose a new theoretical framework to examine the relationships among AICA attributes (stimuli), religious tourists’ cognitive and affective evaluations (organism), and their behavioral responses (MRTEs and continuous use intentions). The model is conceptual, with relationships supported through a comprehensive literature review.
Findings
The model posits that AICA attributes, such as informativeness, accessibility, empathy and personalization, shape religious tourists’ cognitive and affective evaluations of AICAs. These evaluations impact tourists’ MRTEs, influencing their willingness to continue using AICAs in future religious tourism experiences. Additionally, religious tourists’ technology readiness is posited to moderate the relationship between AICA attributes and their cognitive and affective evaluations. Recommendations are made on how future research can be conducted to investigate and test the proposed conceptual model.
Originality/value
This paper enhances the literature on AI in tourism by examining AICAs’ influence on religious tourism experiences and exploring the multidimensional nature of AICA adoption. The proposed conceptual model provides a foundation for future empirical research. It offers insights for tourism operators and service providers, guiding the strategic use of AICAs to enhance MRTEs while respecting the sacred nature of spiritual journeys. These insights can inform the development of more effective and culturally sensitive AI-driven solutions in religious tourism contexts.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to assess the relationship between information technology (IT) use and management innovation through the mediator role of knowledge-based resources.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper presents empirical evidence from a survey of 109 companies that run hotel establishments in the Spanish territory. A model of relationships is proposed and tested through a system of structural equations.
Findings
The use of IT favors the development of organizational knowledge and the ability to integrate this knowledge. Moreover, a positive and direct relationship was found between IT use and management innovation, and indirectly through organizational knowledge and knowledge integration capability.
Research limitations/implications
The designed questionnaire did not include any questions related to specific IT tools that could contribute to better knowledge management practices in hospitality organizations, but rather generic questions about IT use. The large number of IT tools that can potentially support knowledge management practices in hospitality companies would make the questionnaire unwieldy for its target respondents.
Originality/value
This paper sheds light on a topic that has hardly been studied in the services literature. Specifically, it addresses the way organizations can facilitate management innovation through the use of IT, while considering the mediator role of knowledge-based resources.
Objetivo
El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la relación entre el uso de las tecnologías de la información (TIC) y la innovación organizativa a través del papel mediador de los recursos basados en el conocimiento.
Metodología
El trabajo presenta evidencia empírica a partir de una encuesta realizada a 109 empresas que gestionan establecimientos hoteleros en todo el territorio español. Un modelo de relaciones se propone y testa mediante un sistema de ecuaciones estructurales.
Resultados
El uso de TIC favorece el desarrollo del conocimiento organizacional y la capacidad para integrar dicho conocimiento. Además, se encontró una relación directa y positiva entre el uso de TIC y la innovación organizativa, así como una relación mediada por el conocimiento organizacional y la capacidad de integración del conocimiento.
Implicaciones/limitaciones
El cuestionario diseñado no incluyó preguntas relacionadas con herramientas de TIC específicas que pudieran contribuir a mejores prácticas de gestión del conocimiento en empresas de alojamiento turístico, sino preguntas genéricas sobre el uso de TIC. El gran número de herramientas de TIC que potencialmente pueden apoyar las prácticas de gestión del conocimiento en las empresas de alojamiento, complicaría la cumplimentación del cuestionario por parte de los encuestados.
Originalidad/valor
Este estudio amplía el conocimiento sobre un tema escasamente estudiado en la literatura de servicios. En concreto, se aborda la forma en que las organizaciones pueden facilitar la innovación organizativa a través del uso de TIC considerando, simultáneamente, el papel mediador de los recursos basados en el conocimiento.
