Abstract

WORK carried out at the United States Naval Air Development Centre indicates that coatings of solid lubricants can considerably cut down wear rates and, consequently, prolong the life of tools made from high‐speed steel. Furthermore, reduced machining and tool‐dressing times may be anticipated—so suggests an article by these joint authors in a recent “Molysulfide Newsletter”.

Abstract

Advances in artificial intelligence have ushered in new opportunities for marketers in the domain of content generation. We discuss approaches that have emerged to generate text and image content. Drawing on the customer equity framework, we then discuss the potential applications of automated content generation for customer acquisition, relationship development, and customer retention. We conclude by discussing important considerations that businesses must make prior to adopting automated content generation.

Abstract

For teachers to fully enact pedagogy rooted in equity and inclusion, they must have access to purposeful systems and tools supporting proactive and collaborative planning built explicitly to center the needs of those historically denied full access to learning. This chapter takes on the historical injustices that have been perpetuated within public education in the United States since its inception and presents practical tools and systems (rooted in research and refined in the field) that can promote more equitable day-to-day teaching and learning in classrooms.

Abstract

The expansion of marketing data is encouraging the growing use of deep learning (DL) in marketing. I summarize the intuition behind deep learning and explain the mechanisms of six popular algorithms: three discriminative (convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), and Transformer), two generative (variational autoencoder (VAE) and generative adversarial networks (GAN)), and one RL (DQN). I discuss what marketing problems DL is useful for and what fueled its growth in recent years. I emphasize the power and flexibility of DL for modeling unstructured data when formal theories and knowledge are absent. I also describe future research directions.

Abstract

Purpose

To examine the effects of leadership style on in-role performance through feedback seeking behavior (FSB) and engagement using the job demands resource theory (JD-R).

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consisted of 152 employees working in a Peruvian call center. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

Transformational leadership was significantly related to in-role performance, with FSB and engagement sequentially mediating the relationship.

Originality/value

This study highlights the motivational processes that can lead to employee engagement and performance within a call center and identifies the contribution of feedback seeking within this environment.

Abstract

The impact assessment on electronic publishing (EP) is a project conducted jointly by the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre and the Society for Mathematics and Data Processing (GMD), Darmstadt. The project is partly subsidised by the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology which has installed a project board, in that respect following the model of OTA. It can be seen in the broader context of the two German EP projects (in the publishing and patent fields), which were part of the DOCDEL programme of the EEC and were cofunded by the Ministry for Research and Technology. The publishers' project experimented with a markup language for the establishment of full text databases, thus having some resemblance with the standard generalised markup language (SGML) project of the Association of American Publishers.

Abstract

The present work utilizes airborne gamma ray spectrometric data in a trial to refine surface geology of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, detect any radioactive mineralization at Gabel Umm Tineidba area South Eastern Desert, Egypt. The study area is covered by rock exposures ranging in age from the Precambrian to Quaternary. Airborne gamma ray spectrometry can be very helpful in mapping surface geology. This provides estimates of the apparent surface concentrations of the most common naturally occurring radioactive elements, such as potassium (K), equivalent uranium (eU) and equivalent thorium (eTh). This is based on the assumption that, the absolute and relative concentrations of these radioelements vary measurably and significantly with lithology. The composite image technique is used to display simultaneously three parameters of the three radioelement concentrations and their three binary ratios on one image. The technique offers much in terms of lithological discrimination, based on color differences and showed efficiency in defining areas, where different lithofacies occur within areas mapped as one continuous lithology. The integration between surface geological information and geophysical data led to detailing the surface geology and the contacts between different rock units. Significant locations or favourable areas for uranium exploration are defined, where the measurements exceed (X+2S), taking X as the arithmetic mean of eU, eU/eTh and eU/K measurements and S as the standard deviation corresponding to each variables. The study area shows the presence of fifteen relatively high uraniferous zone. In addition, the trend analysis based on the total count map and the published geological map shows that, most of the well-developed structural lineaments have NS, ENE, NNE and NNW trends.

Abstract

Purpose

To examine whether indigenous critiques of globalization and critical theories of modernity are compatible, and how they can complement each other so as to engender more realistic theories of modern society as inherently constructive and destructive, along with practical strategies to strengthen modernity as a culturally transformative project, as opposed to the formal modernization processes that rely on and reinforce modern societies as structures of social inequality.

Methodology/approach

Comparison and assessment of the foundations, orientations, and implications of indigenous critiques of globalization and the Frankfurt School’s critical theory of modern society, for furthering our understanding of challenges facing human civilization in the twenty-first century, and for opportunities to promote social justice.

Findings

Modern societies maintain order by compelling individuals to subscribe to propositions about their own and their society’s purportedly “superior” nature, especially when compared to indigenous cultures, to override observations about the de facto logic of modern societies that are in conflict with their purported logic.

Research implications

Social theorists need to make consistent efforts to critically reflect on how their own society, in terms of socio-historical circumstances as well as various types of implied biases, translates into research agendas and propositions that are highly problematic when applied to those who belong to or come from different socio-historical contexts.

Originality/value

An effort to engender a process of reciprocal engagement between one of the early traditions of critiquing modern societies and a more recent development originating in populations and parts of the world that historically have been the subject of both constructive and destructive modernization processes.
