Abstract

Purpose

Given the sudden disruption caused by COVID-19, knowledge sharing between organizations has become a meaningful way to improve supply chain resilience. However, there is still a lack of in-depth research on how to reduce the threat to knowledge sharing caused by increased levels of relational risk. With the emergence of new digital technologies, whether blockchain governance can control relational risk and replace traditional relational governance remains to be demonstrated.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a cross-sectional survey approach in which quantitative data are collected from 300 participants from Chinese manufacturing enterprises to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that relational and blockchain governance can significantly and complementarily reduce the level of relational risk in knowledge sharing. When the relational risk is at a low, medium or high level, the best matches of relational and blockchain governance are low-level relational governance–low-level blockchain governance, high-level relational governance–low-level blockchain governance and high-level relational governance–high-level blockchain governance, respectively.

Practical implications

The findings of this study have important practical implications for manufacturing enterprises in terms of how to choose reasonable governance modes to manage relational risk behaviour according to different relational risk levels to better understand the positive role of knowledge sharing in supply chain resilience.

Originality/value

The antecedent variables of knowledge sharing in previous studies are based on transaction cost theory or relational theory and have not moved beyond the original theoretical framework. This paper addresses this limitation, puts knowledge sharing in the academic context of digital technology, considers blockchain governance into the process of relational risk-knowledge sharing and defines blockchain governance, which is a novel approach in the supply chain resilience management literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The role of inventors' creativity is crucial for technological innovation within enterprises. The mobility of inventors among different enterprises is a primary source for companies to acquire external knowledge. The mechanism of “learning-by-hiring” is widely recognized by companies. Therefore, it is important to determine how to allocate network resources to enhance the creativity of inventors when companies hire mobile inventors.

Design/methodology/approach

The study suggests an analytical framework that analyzes alterations in tie strength and structural holes resulting from the network embeddedness of mobile inventors as well as the effect of the interaction between these two variables on changes in inventor’s creativity after the mobility. In addition, this paper examines the moderating impact of cognitive richness of mobile inventors and cognitive distance between mobile inventors and new employers on the correlation between network embeddedness and creativity.

Findings

This study found that: (1) The increase of tie strength has a significant boost in creativity. (2) Increasing structural holes can significantly improve the creativity of mobile inventors. (3) When both the tie strength and the structural holes increase, the creativity of the mobile inventors significantly increases. (4) It is important to note that when there is a greater cognitive distance, stronger tie strength promotes the creativity of mobile inventors. Additionally, cognitive richness plays a significant role in moderating the relationship between changes in structural holes and the creativity of mobile inventors.

Originality/value

These findings provide theoretical guidance for firms to effectively manage mobile inventors and optimize collaborative networks within organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on social exchange and resource dependence theories, this research investigates how manufacturing firms’ commitment to low-carbon operations management (CLCOM) prompts manufacturing carbon performance (MCP) through low-carbon supply chain collaboration (SCC), as well as the moderating role of supply chain risk management (SCRM).

Design/methodology/approach

This study verifies the hypotheses employing hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrapping methods through an online survey of 297 Chinese manufacturers.

Findings

The results demonstrate that manufacturers’ low-carbon SCC mediates the influence of affective and continuance CLCOM on MCP. SCRM dampens the link between affective CLCOM and low-carbon SCC. Further, SCRM heightens the relationship of continuance CLCOM–low-carbon collaboration with suppliers, but does not enhance the level of continuance CLCOM–low-carbon collaboration with customers.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the theory and practice area by unveiling the “black-box” of the CLCOM–MCP relationship and considers SCRM’s moderating effect.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to efficiently estimate the extremely small failure probability with high-dimensional inputs and multiple failure domains.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposed an adaptive stratified mixture importance sampling method. The proposed method first constructs an explicit and regular mixture importance sampling probability density function (M-IS-PDF) by taking the clustering centroids as the density centers. Then by the constructed M-IS-PDF, the proposed method explores the rare multiple failure domains by adaptively stratifying, thereby addressing the issue of estimating extremely small failure probability robustly and efficiently.

Findings

Compared with the existing cross-entropy based IS method, the constructed M-IS-PDF not only covers the domains significantly contributing to the failure probability through clustering centroids to reduce the variance of failure probability estimation, but also has no undetermined parameter set to optimize, enhancing the adaptability in high-dimensional problems. Compared with the subset simulation method, the adaptive stratified M-IS-PDF constructed is explicit, regular and easy sampling. It not only has high sampling efficiency but also avoids estimating conditional failure probabilities layer by layer, improving the algorithmic robustness for estimating extremely small failure probability.

Originality/value

Both numerical and engineering examples indicate that, under the similar failure probability estimation accuracy, the proposed method requires significantly smaller sample size and lower computational cost than subset simulation and cross-entropy based IS methods, demonstrating higher efficiency and robustness in addressing intractable reliability analysis problems with high-dimensional inputs, multiple failure domains and rare failure.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the relationship between digitalization and agricultural carbon intensity from 2006 to 2021.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2021, this study employs a threshold and a spatial Durbin model to investigate the relationship between digitalization and agricultural carbon intensity. In addition, a heterogeneity analysis was conducted to understand variations across regions.

Findings

The study used threshold models and spatial Durbin models to reveal that in agricultural production, digitalization can significantly reduce the carbon emission intensity of planting and livestock production. Through the threshold effect, it was found that the effectiveness of digitization in curbing emissions varies by region and is influenced by the level of urbanization, with the inhibitory effect being: western > central > eastern. In addition, through spatial analysis, it was found that the impact of digitalization on carbon emission intensity has significant spatial effects, presenting a “high-high” and “low-low” clustering pattern. Moreover, through the Durbin model, digitization exhibits a significant negative spatial impact on the planting industry, and the development of the local digitalization can significantly reduce the carbon emission intensity of the planting industry in neighboring areas. There is a significant positive spatial effect on livestock production, and the development of local digitalization will, to some extent, increase the carbon emission intensity of livestock production in neighboring areas. This study underscores the critical importance of digitalization in reducing agricultural carbon emissions and highlights the necessity for tailored digital strategies that consider regional characteristics and urbanization levels.

This study shows the critical importance of digitalization in reducing agricultural carbon emissions and highlights the necessity for tailored digital strategies that consider regional characteristics and urbanization levels.

Originality/value

This paper pioneers the investigation of the spatial impact of digitalization on agricultural carbon emissions using provincial-level panel data and classifies agriculture into planting and livestock production. This study contributes to the literature by filling the research gap and enhancing our understanding of the relationship between digitalization and environmental sustainability in rural areas.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the roles of Zhongyong and political efficacy on citizens’ intention to use digital government platforms for e-participation (i.e. e-participation intention). Zhongyong is a dialectical way of thinking that influences Chinese behavioral intentions and approaches. Political efficacy is a predictor of traditional political participation. Both of them have not been adequately investigated in this digital era, particularly regarding e-participation in digital government platforms. Therefore, this study investigates their relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative model is constructed to examine the relationship between Zhongyong and citizens’ e-participation intention (internal and external) political efficacy serves as a mediator. An online questionnaire gathered 345 responses from three representative provinces of China (i.e. Guangdong, Jiangxi and Shanxi). Partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was adopted and executed with Smart PLS 4.0 to analyze the data.

Findings

Zhongyong and (internal and external) political efficacy can positively influence citizens’ e-participation intention. Moreover, (internal and external) political efficacy mediates the relationship between Zhongyong and citizens’ e-participation intention.

Research limitations/implications

This research focuses on Chinese culture Zhongyong and surveyed Chinese citizens, thus is limited to the Chinese context. Second, this study used cross-sectional data. Third, this study only investigated two factors’ effects on e-participation, i.e. Zhongyong and political efficacy.

Practical implications

The findings provide multifaceted strategies for improving citizens’ adoption of digital government platforms for e-participation. Incentive policies to boost citizens’ (internal and external) political efficacy can be launched. To achieve broader citizen participation, a participative culture can be cultivated based on Zhongyong.

Originality/value

This study constructs a novel model that innovatively links Zhongyong thinking, political efficacy and e-participation intention. The results underscore the importance of Zhongyong culture and political efficacy in increasing citizens’ e-participation intention.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim was to investigate the effect of Cr3C2 mass fraction the high-temperature tribological performance of laser cladded WC-10Co4Cr coating, in which the Cr3C2 played the role in enhancing wear resistance.

Design/methodology/approach

The WC-10Co4Cr-xCr3C2 (x = 5%, 10% and 15%) were prepared on H13 steel using laser cladding, and their coefficients of friction and wear rates at 500°C were investigated using a ball-on-disc wear tester.

Findings

The WC-10Co4Cr-xCr3C2 powders are composed of WC, Co3W3C, CoCr and Cr3C2 phases, and the defects such as pores and cracks are reduced by the addition of Cr3C2. The coefficient of friction and wear rats of WC-10Co4Cr-xCr3C2 coatings are decreased with the Cr3C2 mass fraction, showing that the addition of Cr3C2 significantly enhances the tribological properties of WC-10Co4Cr coating. The wear mechanism is adhesive wear and oxidation wear, and the Cr3C2 plays the roles of friction reduction and wear resistance, which provides valuable insights into optimizing the performance of WC-10Co4Cr coating.

Originality/value

The Cr3C2 was first added into the laser cladded WC-10Co4Cr coating, which improved its high-temperature tribological performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the use of modified graphene (MG) in copper wire drawing lubricants to enhance their friction-reducing and anti-wear capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

Graphene was modified using oleic and stearic acids to improve its dispersibility in lubricants. Various concentrations of MG were then introduced into a copper wire drawing lubricant to investigate their tribological performance. Wear mechanisms were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

Findings

The best concentration of MG is 1.5 Wt.%, at which the copper wire drawing oil exhibits a friction coefficient and wear rate of 0.085 and 2.11 × 10−6 mm3/Nm, respectively, representing decreases of 22.7% and 47.6% compared to the base oil. It was further found that the addition of 1.5 Wt.% MG to a copper wire drawing fluid with a water content of 70% resulted in a 30.3% reduction in friction coefficient compared to the base oil. Raman spectroscopy and EDS analysis confirmed that the MG tribo-film formed on the worn copper disc effectively minimized friction and wear.

Originality/value

This study analyzes the tribological performance of different concentrations of MG in copper wire drawing oils, establishing a basis for the application of MG in copper wire drawing fluids.

Abstract

Purpose

In public firms, the largest shareholder can make decisions on cash dividends in favor of its own interests at the expense of other investors. While the second largest shareholder can actively participate in corporate governance and protect the interests of investors, its impact has not been fully understood. This research investigates how shareholding ratio and ownership type of the second largest shareholder moderate the relationship between controlling shareholder's shareholding ratio and cash dividends.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted econometrics analysis based on a panel data of China's A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2017.

Findings

The authors find that the controlling shareholder's shareholding ratio has a significant negative impact on cash dividends. However, this influence is conditional on the shareholding ratio of the second largest shareholder. The negative impact is weakened when the second largest shareholder holds a large proportion of shares or when the shareholding gap between the second largest and the controlling shareholder is small.

Originality/value

This research extends the existing literature by highlighting the nuanced moderating effect of the second largest shareholder on the relationship between the controlling shareholder and cash dividends, thus making a unique contribution to the understanding of corporate governances in the emerging financial market in China.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid development of information technology, epitomized by AIGC and the metaverse, presents unprecedented challenges to techno-ethics, exposing society to significant risks and uncertainties. A systematic investigation and discussion of the construction of techno-ethical order become crucial under the paradigm of risk society theory. The selection of conditions and pathways for constructing a techno-ethical order under the risk society theory paradigm becomes an unavoidable and vital issue.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on risk society theory, this study employs scientometrics and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to empirically analyze the key factors and conditional pathways in the construction of techno-ethical order. Initially, a quantitative analysis is conducted on 1,490 thematic literature retrieved from CNKI and WoS to identify the hot topics and core concepts in techno-ethical research. Subsequently, QCA configuration analysis is applied to calculate eight evaluation indicators and their weights from the perspectives of government, society and individuals. Finally, the study explores the mechanisms of the impact of these indicators’ weights on the construction of techno-ethical order.

Findings

The analysis of factor weights and pathways indicates that the selection of pathways for constructing techno-ethical order is influenced both by the inherent development patterns of technology and societal systems and cultural values. Literature metrics analysis reveals an overall trend of sustained growth in techno-ethical research, indicating an unprecedented prosperity in this field. Alongside technological advancements, keywords related to “artificial intelligence” play a crucial role in current techno-ethical research. Configuration analysis demonstrates that conditional variables from the dimensions of government, society and individuals form a configuration pathway, influencing and synergistically impacting the overall level of techno-ethical order construction. Attention should be given to the mutual constraints and synergistic effects of factors related to technological development, societal systems and cultural values.

Originality/value

This study, grounded in the risk society theory paradigm, quantitatively explores the key factors and pathways of techno-ethical order construction in academic texts, expanding new perspectives, providing novel insights, establishing innovative methodologies and extending new boundaries in the field. Further enrichment of the dataset and in-depth discussions are warranted for continued advancement.
