Abstract

In the years following the publication of A Theory of Consumption (1923), Hazel Kyrk’s book became the flagship of the field that would later be known as the economics of consumption. It stimulated theoretical and empirical work on consumption. Some of the existing literature on Kyrk (e.g., Kiss & Beller, 2000; Le Tollec, 2020; Tadajewski, 2013) depicted her theory as the starting point of the economics of consumption. Nevertheless, how and why it emerged the way it did remain largely unexplored. This chapter examines Kyrk’s intellectual background, which, we argue, can be traced back to two main movements in the United States: the home economics and the institutionalist. Both movements conveyed specific endeavors as responses to the US material and social transformations that occurred at the turn of the 20th century, notably the perceived changing role of consumption and that of women in US society. On the one hand, Kyrk pursued first-generation home economists’ efforts to make sense of and put into action the shifting of women’s role from domestic producer to consumer. On the other hand, she reinterpreted Veblen’s (1899) account of consumption in order to reveal its operational value for a normative agenda focused on “wise” and “rational” consumption. This chapter studies how Kyrk carried on first-generation home economists’ progressive agenda and how she adapted Veblen’s fin-de-siècle critical account of consumption to the context of the household goods developed in 1900–1920. Our account of Kyrk’s intellectual roots offers a novel narrative to better understand the role of gender and epistemological questions in her theory.

In a world with over 8 billion people, ensuring sustainable food sources is paramount. This chapter explores the pivotal role of aquaculture in addressing the challenges of marine conservation and sustainable resource use. Aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14, aquaculture emerges as a solution to relieve pressure on wild fish stocks and enhance food security. The chapter emphasises the rapid growth of this sector and underscores the importance of international cooperation and policies like the Global Ocean Treaty in ensuring marine biodiversity. While acknowledging the potential of aquaculture, the chapter delves into environmental concerns surrounding fishmeal and fish oil in feed. It advocates for innovative technologies and ingredients to establish a circular bioeconomy. The significance of higher education in advancing sustainable aquafeed technology, breeding, and genetics is highlighted, with a discussion on milestones achieved by experts like Dr John E. Halver and Professor Simon J. Davies. Examining technological advances, the chapter explores molecular genetics, transgenics, and gene editing, particularly CRISPR biosciences, as transformative tools for enhancing aquaculture productivity and sustainability. Environmental impacts are addressed, proposing solutions such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Multitrophic Aquaculture Systems (MTA) to minimise ecological footprints. Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on the integral role of research and education in fostering sustainable aquaculture practices. The chapter advocates for specialised courses and programs in higher education to prepare the next generation for the challenges and opportunities in aquaculture, ensuring its contribution to global food security and environmental stewardship.

Abstract

Purpose

Sponsorship identification accuracy is typically assessed as the percentage of consumers answering “yes” when asked if a brand is a sponsor (hits). However, this fails to consider misattribution (answering “yes” for a non-sponsor brand; false alarms). Misattribution reflects consumer confusion and dilutes the benefits of an official sponsorship, offers an advantage to a non-sponsoring rival and reduces a brand’s return on sponsorship investment. Informed by signal-detection theory (SDT), we show how hits may be disentangled from false alarms using a measure of sensitivity called d-prime (d’). A related measure of response bias (c) is also discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

In Study 1, we report the results of an experiment. In Study 2, we rely on a field study involving actual sponsors and fans.

Findings

The use of d’ and c is superior to tallying “yes” responses because they account for accurate sponsor attribution and misattribution to non-sponsor competitors.

Originality/value

In the context of sponsorship, we demonstrate how d’ and c can be easily calculated using Excel. Our research also includes an experimental study that establishes the hypothesized effects and then replicate results in a field setting.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the influence of network power on exploratory and exploitative innovation and examines the moderating effects of power distance and procedural justice on these untested relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses survey data collected from firms in China and explores the influential mechanisms of network power, power distance and procedural justice in firm innovation.

Findings

This study empirically shows that network power has an inverted U-shaped effect on exploratory and exploitative innovation. Power distance weakens the effect of network power on exploratory and exploitative innovation, and procedural justice enhances the effect of network power on exploratory and exploitative innovation.

Research limitations/implications

This study extends resource dependence theory and contributes to the literature on innovation management. Future studies should use different collection channels or research methods to provide more evidence for model promotion. In addition, the dynamic power game among network members and the roles of other mediators or moderators warrant further consideration.

Practical implications

Managers should exercise power strategies properly and ensure that their innovation income exceeds expenditures. Managers need to pay serious attention to power distance and procedural justice in the network and formulate suitable cooperation strategies based on actual conditions.

Originality/value

This study applies the resource dependence theory to investigate the influence of network power on exploratory and exploitative innovation. In addition, the moderating roles of power distance and procedural justice in the above relationships, which have rarely been discussed in previous studies, were tested.

Abstract

Purpose

Diversity policies have become widespread in modern organizations. Such policies often have the goal of improving the workplace experiences of marginalized groups, and understanding dominant group reactions to such policies is vital to their effectiveness. This paper investigated the dominant group (i.e. White individuals) response to diversity policies, specifically how White individuals’ modern racism beliefs influence their organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) intentions when exposed to a diversity policy.

Design/methodology/approach

Using experimental methodology and a combination of social exchange theory and literature on modern racism, the two studies explore how exposure to a diversity (versus neutral) policy influences White individuals’ OCB intentions in two different settings (lab and field).

Findings

The results of these studies make clear that certain people respond negatively to diversity policies. In Study 1, White participants with relatively high modern racism beliefs showed lower OCB intentions directed at their organization when exposed to a diversity versus neutral policy. No differences emerged for White participants with relatively low modern racism beliefs. In Study 2, the results were replicated using a field sample of working adults in which they indicated their likelihood of OCB toward their employing organization.

Originality/value

The findings suggest that diversity policies can have unintended, adverse consequences for organizations, but are dependent upon employees’ modern racism beliefs. The results of the two studies provide a richer understanding of dominant group reactions to diversity policies by examining a downstream consequence of great organizational importance, i.e. OCB.

Abstract

Purpose

Major maintenance projects are often regarded as maintenance activities regardless of the projects' complexity and scale. Consequently, very scarce research attention has hitherto been paid to the critical skills required when undertaking these projects. More specifically, the body of relevant knowledge is deprived of a study focusing on maintenance projects within the energy sector. In view of this shortcoming, this research aims to examine the critical project management (PM) skills required to deliver major maintenance projects within the energy sector.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a quantitative research strategy, this study addressed the knowledge gap through a cross-sectional survey of professionals involved in the delivery of major maintenance projects in the United Kingdom's (UK) energy sector. Data obtained were analyzed via descriptive (e.g. frequencies, mean and standard deviation [SD]) and inferential statistical analyses (One sample t-test and exploratory factor analysis (EFA)).

Findings

Out of the 45 PM skills identified in the literature and examined by the respondents, the results obtained from the One sample t-test (based on p (1-tailed) = 0.05) showed that 37 were considered to be at least “important,” accounting for 80.4% of all the skills identified. EFA revealed a clustering of the PM skills items into seven components: “skills related to work scheduling and coordination”; “communication, risk, safety and stakeholder management skills”; “quality assurance skills”; “people management skills”; “skills related to forecasting scope and duration of outage”; “implementation of processes and time management skills” and “technical/engineering skills and experience pertaining to the outage and local site knowledge.”

Originality/value

This study has identified and contributed to the limited state-of-the-art skills project managers must possess to manage major maintenance projects in the energy sector successfully. The findings would be useful to organizations within the energy sector in ensuring that the organizations have suitable personnel in place to deliver major maintenance projects on the organizations' assets.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is a rapidly emerging technology that has revolutionised teaching and learning, administrative tasks and research in higher education. The emergence of AI in higher education has impacted the evolving roles of faculty and students, how data is examined and how results are delivered. In this chapter, the different aspects of the role of AI and the transformative power of AI in both academic and administrative spheres are revealed. The case studies presented and future directions reveal AI's capability in transforming education and preparing for an AI-driven workforce. The personalisation of learning experiences, automation of administrative tasks, enhancement of research and impact on instructional design, all made possible through AI, reveal the possibility of tackling long-standing challenges in education, such as accessibility, engagement and efficiency. In the AI-enhanced future that higher education institutions navigate, it is vital to hold on to the principle that AI should be used as a tool for empowerment, innovation and transformation, ensuring that learning goes through the required progress.

Abstract

Purpose

The growth of mental disorders and their costs represents a public health challenge. This study aims to explore how a social club can help mitigate its impact through arts and sports workshops.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the social return on investment (SROI) methodology, the impact of the social club is evaluated by identifying stakeholders and quantifying their contributions. In addition, the relationship between patients’ attendance and the reduction of relapses and medication consumption is explored.

Findings

The SROI showed a positive return on investment, €12.12 per euro invested. This ratio indicates that the social club generates social value well above its initial costs. On the other hand, two stakeholders were identified as higher impact generators, and it was confirmed that sports activities generate more social and economic impact than art activities – however, the positive effects of art activities last longer over time. The study revealed a positive relationship between social club attendance and relapse reduction. Almost 90% of the participating users reported no relapses or emergency hospitalizations during the past year of attendance. In addition, a substantial decrease in medication dosage was observed. These results suggest that social clubs help stabilize mental health and reduce the burden on health-care systems.

Originality/value

The case study highlights the vital role of social clubs in supporting people facing mental health issues. Policymakers and health-care providers can use this knowledge to invest in more effective and sustainable mental health support activities.

Abstract

Purpose

This article delves into a theoretical framework evaluating the outcomes of justice perception (JP) on post-complaint behaviors. In addition, this article intends to facilitate service strategists to tailor service recovery efforts to attain a competitive gain.

Design/methodology/approach

We explored the complex relationships between JP and positive word-of-mouth (PWOM), evaluating the role of recovery disconfirmation (RD) as a mediator and also exploring factors that work as moderators. Data were collected in three different studies (Study 1: survey in banking service, Study 2a: experiment in hotel service and Study 2b: experiment in banking service) and were evaluated through the regression-based analysis.

Findings

Findings show that the link between JP and PWOM is mediated by RD. Moreover, the attitude toward complaining, failure severity and cognitive reappraisal function as moderators in affecting the behavioral consequences of JP.

Originality/value

In contrast to existing research discussing similar topics, in this article, exclusive focus is given on the moderation and mediation impacts for hypotheses evaluation. Thus, the outcomes from our studies provide a strategic outline for managing service failures by enhancing customer interactions, creating opportunities for competitive gain.
