Purpose – explores some of the IT applications expected to be developed over the next few years for diagnosing and monitoring health and disease and note some of the applications that have already made an impact on health care. Design/methodology/approach – some of the IT-based medical and health care applications that are currently under investigation are described to reveal their current state of development and application. Findings – The applications appearing in this feature include: Elisha (wwwimmunosensors.com), a project by researchers at Leeds University to provide the means for detecting a range of diseases, from prostate and ovarian cancer to stroke, in approximately 15 minutes; Healthvault (www.healthvault.com), launched by Microsoft Corporation to ensure that health care providers have access to as much clinical information about a patient as possible; and the Eco Sensor Concept (www.nokia.com/A4707477stayintouch), from Nokia. Includes descriptions of developments to restore mobility in those who are unable to walk (Argo’s Rewalk (www.argomedtec.com)), unable to see (Second Sight Medical Products’’ Artificial Retina Project), or need to control objects with their minds (Ambient Corporation’s Audeo). Includes approaches designed to help people stay motivated to stick to healthy living routines.
