Purpose – To identify and discuss the characteristics of effective teams. Design/methodology/approach – Observes that effective collaboration generally requires clear definition of roles and small team size. Dismisses much of what is written about teamwork and the use of motivational posters as “bunk”. States that teamwork requires practice and emerges as an outcome from creating the conditions in which it can flourish. Discusses the role of individual behaviour in team performance, distinguishing between the “I“ of rugged individualism and the “affiliatory I” that results in cooperative behaviour. Argues that people are not “hard wired” for cooperation and will not automatically do so if formed into teams. Points out however that if time is taken to establish goals, roles and norms, then participants will, even at a young age, exert pressure on other group members to enforce appropriate behaviour. Practical implications – Includes diverse examples such as the television show The A-Team and Cirque du Soleil. Originality/value – Advises individuals to become more skilled at doing things with others in order to increase their effectiveness.ISSN: 0738-5587Reference: 35AP216
