Purpose – Describes Jack Welch’s leadership style during his time as chairman and chief executive of General Electric. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes from a keynote address that Welch recently made at the FranklinCovey Symposium. Among the topics covered in the address were the nature of good leadership; the importance of leadership development; making an organization a learning organization; employee recruitment; performance appraisal; motivation; and handling organizational change. Findings – Underlines, among other things, the value of leadership development, the value of an inclusive leadership style, the need for leaders to maintain their own learning, the need to appraise the performance of an employee each time they get a pay increase, the value of rewarding employees and celebrating their success, and the importance of leaders being open about plans for change.
