Purpose – Points to the increasing number of US firms that are delivering training in the first languages of their employees rather than in English. Discusses the advantages of this. Design/methodology/approach – Describes the types of training that is being delivered in this way and how the training in the different languages is managed. Explains why US companies are offering training in different languages, usually Spanish, illustrating this by describing some of the programmes being offered by companies. Sets out the pitfalls to avoid when offering training in different languages and gives advice on identifying a suitable trainer. Findings – Argues that offering employees training in their first language ensures that they understand what is being taught and therefore increases training effectiveness. Underlines the need to ensure that the training is not just a translation of the English-language training course but is effectively written and delivered. Originality/value – Highlights the amount of employee training that is being delivered in the USA in Spanish as well as in English.Style: Viewpoint35AC564
