Viewpoint: “But you always said we won the War, Daddy.”

Abstract

There was a period when left‐wingers bemoaned the “wantlessness of the working class”. The post‐war era has seen the very opposite of this in many Western nations, notably Britain and America. The decline in the competitiveness of these countries, particularly in Britain, is rooted in more than the policies and practices of management, labour and government. It is rooted also in the emergence of a psychology of expectations. There has been the emergence of a new attitude towards work, government, and what people now believe is theirs by right. The older belief of the protestant work ethic has been abandoned by many. Likewise beliefs concerning the need for saving and investment, and the notion that rewards should be based on effort and achievement, have been under fire.
