Abstract
Purpose
The paper describes, in the second of two articles on UK computer‐training company Happy Computers, the importance of work‐life balance.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper outlines the origins of the work‐life balance programme at the company and the way in which it has evolved, and details some of the results of the policy.
Findings
Flexible working helps to keep the staff motivated. The policy has also enhanced the company's reputation with both clients and employees.
Practical implications
The paper reveals that employee turnover is 10 percent a year at Happy Computers, compared to an average of 17 percent for the information‐technology training sector.
Originality/value
The author contends that workplace flexibility has helped to improve overall employee flexibility and empowerment.
