Abstract
Purpose
This article demonstrates how UK construction company Frank Haslam Milan (FHm) has hit its target of zero reportable accidents through its award‐winning training and awareness program, which involves its employees and around 2,000 people living in the homes it builds and refurbishes.
Design/methodology/approach
Draws on information provided by the company's HR manager.
Findings
Describes how three target groups – management and office staff, site operatives and end users, including clients, customers and members of the public – were given demonstrable skills in health and safety. Between 2002 and 2004, some 55 site‐management staff received training in, among other topics, first aid, site‐safety management, the control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) and driver awareness. More than 250 operatives received training in general health and safety matters and, where necessary, manual handling and driver safety awareness. In addition, up to 130 technical and support staff and around 2,000 residents had sessions on first aid, driver safety awareness and general health and safety matters.
Practical implications
Highlights that, while the goals set from the outset were tough, the training has exceeded expectations. The company's reputation as one of the safest in the industry has been cemented. This has improved business performance and helped the firm to pick up a string of new contracts and national awards.
Originality/value
Demonstrates how health and safety training is now paving the way for skill development in other areas. Having focused on the “safety” element, the company is now looking to devote equal attention to “health”.
