Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to discover the underlying reasons for the failure of solar energy architecture in Turkey in order to be able suggest methods of improving it in Turkey and worldwide.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology employed in this research is on‐site observations of Turkish solar houses built with respect to the details of their application, and depiction of heat gains provided with applied solar measures, and to compare them with an ideal gauge to determine the deficiencies involved in applications.

Findings

The investigations discovered that various buildings under consideration share several errors. In order of importance, these items are: faulty applications, erroneous choice of methods and lack of precautions in the summer.

Practical implications

The practical implications of the study are that measures must be taken to prevent heat loss during winter nights; outer walls with a resistance to heat transmission of u=1 W/m2K would have been preferred rather than ordinary old‐fashioned Trombe walls; in order to prevent overheating the surfaces of the sunspaces, Trombe walls and air collectors contacting the outer environment need to be made movable or pliable to avoid sinking of heated air into the sunspace.

Social implications

The social implication of the study is that only continued exploration into solar energy use via exemplary practice may encourage adoption of these systems by society itself.

Originality/value

The value of the research resides in translating knowledge gained from previous solar projects into design aspects which are expected to avoid these errors and deficiencies, demonstrated herein through Malatya solar housing, from which everyone involved in passive solar house design may benefit.

Abstract

Purpose

To overcome the various pressures related to the environmental damage raised by production processes, enhancing sustainable reverse logistics (SRL) capability is a new road for manufacturing companies, as it facilitates them to have more sustainable operations by increasing different performance outputs. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the SRL capability and the triple bottom line (TBL) i.e. economic, social and environmental performance in the context of Turkey's manufacturing industry. The mediating role of sustainability culture has also been examined.

Design/methodology/approach

Using survey data obtained from the Turkish manufacturing industry, the partial least square path modeling technique of structural equation modeling has been applied to test the research hypothesis.

Findings

The results of the study indicate that the SRL capability generates not only outstanding environmental and economic gains but also social benefits. The authors also find that sustainability culture is positively associated with environmental and social performance, yet not economic performance. In addition, the findings indicate sustainability culture mediates the relationship between SRL capability and social performance.

Originality/value

This study expands the frontier of managerial knowledge by highlighting the importance of SRL capability for sustainability and exhibiting evidence of the business value of enhancing SRL capability and sustainability culture.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the article is to conduct a mathematical and theoretical analysis of soliton solutions for a specific nonlinear evolution equation known as the (2 + 1)-dimensional Zoomeron equation. Solitons are solitary wave solutions that maintain their shape and propagate without changing form in certain nonlinear wave equations. The Zoomeron equation appears to be a special model in this context and is associated with other types of solitons, such as Boomeron and Trappon solitons. In this work, the authors employ two mathematical methods, the modified F-expansion approach with the Riccati equation and the modified generalized Kudryashov’s methods, to derive various types of soliton solutions. These solutions include kink solitons, dark solitons, bright solitons, singular solitons, periodic singular solitons and rational solitons. The authors also present these solutions in different dimensions, including two-dimensional, three-dimensional and contour graphics, which can help visualize and understand the behavior of these solitons in the context of the Zoomeron equation. The primary goal of this article is to contribute to the understanding of soliton solutions in the context of the (2 + 1)-dimensional Zoomeron equation, and it serves as a mathematical and theoretical exploration of the properties and characteristics of these solitons in this specific nonlinear wave equation.

Design/methodology/approach

The article’s methodology involves applying specialized mathematical techniques to analyze and derive soliton solutions for the (2 + 1)-dimensional Zoomeron equation and then presenting these solutions graphically. The overall goal is to contribute to the understanding of soliton behavior in this specific nonlinear equation and potentially uncover new insights or applications of these soliton solutions.

Findings

As for the findings of the article, they can be summarized as follows: The article provides a systematic exploration of the (2 + 1)-dimensional Zoomeron equation and its soliton solutions, which include different types of solitons. Abstract

Purpose

Religion plays an important role in promoting and inhibiting consumption of goods and services. Halal food, for instance, represents one such food permitted by Islam. Within a broader category of consumers for religiously sanctioned products such as halal food, young consumers represent an important segment, as they have a high lifetime value, thereby requiring special attention. This study aims to identify and examine individual and social factors that can foster young consumer’s engagement for halal products.

Design/methodology/approach

An inductive research approach using the Gioia method has been used to develop broader themes for discussion. The authors have also proposed a model for engaging young consumers for religiously sanctioned dietary products.

Findings

The paper provides empirical insights into the interplay of identities and value sources that encourages or forbids consumer engagement for halal products.

Practical implications

Globally, the halal food industry has been estimated to be worth $580bn, and it is growing at an average rate of 7 per cent annually. Marketers, thus, need to be aware of diverse consumers’ needs to provide a customized offering; they have to cater to adherent customers of these religiously sanctioned products by being sensitive to intricacies that make such food items consumable. The study will help marketers to better align their promotional strategies with the needs and requirement of young consumers.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors have operationalized repeated interaction and associated consumption in the context of halal food to understand how religion and other factors play a role in strengthening or weakening consumer engagement. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study has been done to understand young consumer’s engagement for halal food products in the Indian context. India being a land of multi-religion and multi-culture, such studies can provide rich insights.

Abstract

Purpose

The soliton solutions are obtained by using extended rational sin/cos and sinh-cosh method. The methods are powerful and have ease of use. Applying wave transformation to the nonlinear partial differential equations (NLPDEs) and the considered equation turns into a nonlinear differential equation (NODE). According to the methods, the solution sets of the NODE are supposed to the form of the rational terms as sinh/cosh and sin/cos and the trial solutions are substituted into the NODE. Collecting the same power of the trigonometric functions, a set of algebraic equations is derived.

Design/methodology/approach

The main purpose of this paper is to obtain soliton solutions of the modified equal width (MEW) equation. MEW is a form of regularized-long-wave (RLW) equation that represents one-dimensional wave propagation in nonlinear media with dispersion processes. This is also used to simulate the undular bore in a long shallow water canal.

Findings

Thus, the solution of the main PDE is reduced to the solution of a set of algebraic equations. In this paper, the kink, singular and singular periodic solitons have been successfully obtained.

Originality/value

Illustrative plots of the solutions have been presented for physical interpretation of the obtained solutions. The methods are powerful and might be used to solve a broad class of differential equations in real-life problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships among four types of sustainable operations practices and sustainable performance in the environmental, economic and social dimensions and identifies significant moderators.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to achieve the proposed goal, this study was developed through a systematic review of the literature followed by a meta-analysis of the correlations and by a meta-regression. The sampling criteria were quantitative operations management articles published through 2019.

Findings

The results suggest that all 13 analyzed relationships are positive and are affected by moderators.

Research limitations/implications

In theoretical terms, this study reinforces the positive relationship between sustainable operations practices and performance and, more importantly, detects moderating effects. One of the study limitations is the composition of the sample, focusing exclusively on quantitative correlational articles published in journals.

Practical implications

In practice, the findings of this study imply that managers should be vigilant in implementing sustainable operations practices, observing the conditions in which more of these practices can be implemented into performance.

Originality/value

This study differs from others because it includes the social dimension of sustainable performance and the identification of moderators.

Abstract

A crucial aspect of supply chain management (SCM) is the formulation of lean supply chain management (LSCM). In this sense, the key practices are extended towards the LSCM settings as alternative strategies and several frameworks were developed to help companies to make choices based on production disruption. Studies in this field have focussed mainly on SCM. Although manufacturing businesses recognise the necessity of effective SCM, but little study has been done on manufacturing LSCM. The behaviour and the potential for significant impacts on sustainable performance (SP) in manufacturing companies can vary with time and variations for approaches of the LSCM key practices. This chapter, therefore, focusses on main practices for LSCM on the basis of evaluations of experts in the Malaysian manufacturing sector in order to achieve SP in manufacturing companies. The aim of this chapter is to identify the key practices in LSCM on SP. Hence, this chapter reviewed 172 articles published from 2015 to 2019, used the methodology for SLR with three main steps: literature review planning, reviewing, and reporting. As a result, there are evidence that the key practices for LSCM used in previous studies are (1) customer relationship management, (2) supplier relationship management, (3) just in time manufacturing, (4) waste reduction, (5) cost reduction, and (6) minimise inventory level. In manufacturing industries, LSCM is more complex. Insights on the causing issues and SP are provided. Finally, this chapter contributes to SCM and literature on sustainability and has managerial implications for companies to improve SP more effectively.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the roles of market, technology, and management system-related adaptive capability variables on a firm’s manufacturing adaptive capability. In addition, the study examines the effects of a firm’s manufacturing adaptive capability on its effectiveness. Further, this study tests the moderating role of organizational redundancy on the relationship between the market, technology, and management system-related adaptive capabilities and the overall manufacturing adaptive capability of a firm.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilizes questionnaire-based research to test the suggested hypotheses by gathering related data from 59 manufacturing firms.

Findings

This study determined that a firm’s technology and management system-related adaptive capability positively relates to firm's manufacturing adaptive capability. Further, market adaptive capability influences manufacturing adaptive capability via the levels of technology and management system-related adaptive capabilities. Manufacturing adaptive capability is also found to be positively associated with organizational effectiveness, and resource redundancy positively moderates the relationship between management systems adaptive capability and manufacturing adaptive capability. Conversely, resource redundancy negatively moderates the relationship between technology adaptive capability and manufacturing adaptive capability. Finally, this study demonstrates that information redundancy does not moderate the desired relationship between all the adaptive capability-related variables for firms.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitations inherent in survey design, mainly for both convenient sampling and country context.

Practical implications

This study suggests that management should improve firm’s manufacturing adaptive capability to enhance firm's overall effectiveness. For that purpose, managers should consider the interrelationships between the market and a firm’s technology, management system, and manufacturing-related adaptive capabilities. Management should also consider the importance of using resource-related redundancy to leverage the relationship between a firm’s management adaptive capability and manufacturing adaptive capability. At the same time, management should be aware of certain reverse effects of resource redundancy on both technology adaptive capability and the manufacturing adaptive capability linkage of a firm.

Originality/value

This study expands the understanding of the adaptive capability of firms by examining how manufacturing adaptive capability can be further enhanced. The study also offers a model for the potential relationships that develop between different aspects of organizational adaptive capability by applying the contingency role of organizational redundancy variables.
