Abstract

Purpose

The existing research rarely explains the value of authoritarian leadership in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The purpose of this study is to explore how authoritarian leadership facilitates employee followership behaviors of the SMEs in China by considering the moderating effects of cooperative goal interdependence and leader behavioral integrity.

Design/methodology/approach

This research tested hypotheses with a two-wave survey from a sample of 258 respondents from SMEs in China. Hypotheses are tested using hierarchical regression analyses.

Findings

Findings of the study have indicated the instrumental function of authoritarian leadership in facilitating employee followership behavior in SMEs. In particular, this study shows that the influence of authoritarian leadership on followership behavior was positively related when employees have high cooperative goal interdependence with authoritarian leaders, and when employees perceive a leader's high behavioral integrity.

Practical implications

The study will help SMEs to understand that authoritarian leadership should seek optimal levels of cooperative goals with employees and integrate achievement goals into their career development strategy to enhance their followership behavior. In addition, authoritarian leadership should strive to take actions consistent with their words to guarantee the relationship between achieving goals and sharing mutual goals with employees.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature by addressing an important yet under-researched area, i.e. the effectiveness of authoritarian leadership in SMEs. Authoritarian leadership, a demanding and controlling leadership style, is often criticized by scholars. This study elaborates on a three-way interaction implied by self-determination theory in predicting followership behavior. It specifies the different roles of two situational factors (cooperative goal interdependence and leader behavior integrity) in affecting employees' followership behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the issue of promoting women managers at an enterprise level in China by tackling key research questions related to the level of participation of women among total managerial positions and the opportunities of promoting women into managerial position.

Design/methodology/approach

By conducting a questionnaire survey and analysing the results from 296 women managers who were taking MBA and EMBA programmes in China, the authors were able to obtain the sufficient sample size, as well as sufficient responses, given that these people who were taking MBA and EMBA studies required three to eight years of managerial work experience. Key questions are related to the level of participation of women among total managerial positions, and the criteria for women to be promoted into managerial positions. In addition, other issues such as the satisfaction of women managers towards promotion opportunities and career development and enterprise policies on women leadership are also important and need to be explored in this article. It is also useful to ask their views on the difference between men and women regarding individual efforts leading to promotion opportunities, and to check for any influence of pregnancy and other factors on women managers’ leadership roles.

Findings

The overall results achieved by analysing the results from 296 women managers who were taking MBA and EMBA programmes in China indicate that there has been positive improvement, with the majority of women managers being satisfied with the proportion of women as managers, and with their own promotion situations, in their current organizations.

Research limitations/implications

The research project has some limitations. This paper focuses on key issues related to the promotion of women into management positions at an enterprise level through the interview and survey among those women managers who were taking MBA and EMBA programs. This research project did not include many issues that can be found among other women managers or issues at the society level, such as traditional culture and the influence of religion, or overall legislation regarding equal opportunity for women in the society, as the focus was on the experiences and expectations of individual women managers in the workplace.

Practical implications

Most people believed that social relationship, guanxi, is the most important factor in the promotion of women, but the findings in this paper show that the capabilities and achievements of women are more important than just having a good guanxi. This also inspires women to believe in themselves and believe that they can achieve their goals through their own effort. Other empirical implications, such as the negative influence of pregnancy on the current managerial positions and promotion opportunities for women, are evident, and the lack of policy initiative to address this issue causes a great degree of uncertainty among women managers.

Social implications

The majority of the surveyed targeted women managers felt confident about their capability to be leaders, while most of them felt satisfied regarding the proportion of women managers in their organization, as well as their own current promotion situation. However, the “glass ceiling” phenomenon still exists, given most highly educated women managers believed it would be difficult to be promoted even further.

Originality/value

Through this article, the readers are firstly informed about the perceptions held by women managers in China nowadays regarding their promotion opportunities and career satisfaction. Secondly, the paper provides some understanding in the context of China’s reform from traditional planning system to the current market-oriented one, the associated change of business culture and the transformation of human resource management system and gender equality at the firm level.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the superior relationship among the parameters of age, casual blood pressure and 24‐hour ambulatory blood pressure with left atrial and ventricular structure and left ventricular filling function in systolic hypertensives (SH).

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 30 male and seven female patients aged from 46‐74 (averaged at 59±7) years with stage I∼II systolic hypertension were studied. The criterion of the subjects was SBP ≥ 160 mmHg and DBP < 95 mmHg or SBP ≥ 2 × (DBP‐15 mmHg) and DBP≥95 mmHg. The parameters acted as independent variables were: age, casual systolic and diastolic blood pressure (CSBP and CDBP) and 24‐hour ambulatory systolic and diastolic blood pressure (ASBP24 and ADBP24). The parameters acted as dependent variables were ratio of the early rapid filling peak flow velocity and late atrial contractive filling peak flow velocity below the mitral valve on the pulsed‐wave spectral Doppler echocardiography (LAD/AoD). The collected data were analyzed via the superior grey relational analyses.

Findings

The results showed that the superior grey relational order in independent variables was ASBP24 > ADBP24 > CSBP > CDBP > age and the superior grey relational order in dependent variables was LAD/AoD > MVe/a > LVMI.

Originality/value

Among the independent variables ASBP24 is the most important factor of affecting the cardiac structure and function in SH. The first cardiac variation in SH is the left atrial structure affected by the independent variables. After that left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and the left ventricular hypertrophic changes take place in succession.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of cross-ownership on corporate digital innovation and their specific mechanisms. Cross-ownership, who hold equity in two or more companies simultaneously, have two different types of governance effects in the capital market: governance synergistic effects and competitive collusion effects.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a panel model, selecting A-share company data from 2011 to 2021 in China. In total, 23,853 valid data were obtained, which came from the CSMAR database and Wind database. For some missing data, they were manually supplemented by consulting the company's annual report and Sina Finance. Data processing was conducted using EXCEL and Stata16.0 software.

Findings

The results show that cross-ownership promote corporate digital innovation by leveraging governance synergies. Further grouping tests show that the synergistic effects of cross-ownership are significant in non-state-owned, high-tech, weakly competitive and higher analyst attention enterprises. Mechanism testing shows that cross-ownership can empower corporate digital innovation in three ways: reducing information asymmetry, alleviating financing constraints and improving corporate governance.

Originality/value

The conclusion of this paper provides new empirical evidence for a comprehensive understanding of the role of cross-ownership in corporate development, enriches the economic consequences research of chain institutional investors in China and broadens the research perspective of corporate digital innovation. It also provides important references for the digital transformation of enterprises and the healthy development of the capital market.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify important factors in green public procurement (GPP) implementation and then to clarify how these factors affect GPP implementation.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors applied the Delphi method first and then conducted a focused and constrained multiple case study at 18 government procurement centers across China.

Findings

The authors identified four clusters of factors for successful GPP implementation: more clear, consistent and operational policy goals; a nation-wide green procurement campaign to enhance social capital and cultural resources; promoting staff’s ethics, professionalism, capacity and knowledge; and establishing checks and balances among organizations involved in the whole purchasing process.

Social implications

GPP can significantly improve environmental protection and sustainable development.

Originality/value

Based on key insights from systems theory and agency theory, the authors emphasize that GPP implementation must take down its own functional silos and adopt a process approach across organizational tiers to synchronize human resource based and inter-organizational capabilities into a unified whole through information sharing, communications and collaboration.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore suitable anode materials used in the electrochemical system for indigo dyeing wastewater, to achieve optimal treatment performances.

Design/methodology/approach

The single factor experiment was used to explore the optimum process parameters for electrochemical decolorization of indigo dyeing wastewater by changing the applied voltage, electrolysis time and electrolyte concentration. At the voltage of 9 V, the morphology of flocs with different electrolytic times was observed and the effect of electrolyte concentration on decolorization rate in two electrolyte systems was also investigated. Further analysis of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate, anode weight loss and sediment quantity after electrochemical treatment of indigo dyeing wastewater were carried out.

Findings

Comprehensive considering the decolorization degree and COD removal rate of the wastewater, the aluminum electrode showed the best treatment effect among several common anode materials. With aluminum electrode as an anode, under conditions of applied voltage of 9 V, electrolysis time of 40 min and sodium sulfate concentration of 6 g/L, the decolorization percentage obtained was of 94.59% and the COD removal rate reached at 84.53%.

Research limitations/implications

In the electrochemical treatment of indigo dyeing wastewater, the aluminum electrode was found as an ideal anode material, which provided a reference for the choice of anodes. The electrodes used in this study were homogenous material and the composite material anode needed to be further researched.

Practical implications

It provided an effective and practical anode material choice for electrochemical degradation of indigo dyeing wastewater.

Originality/value

Combined with the influence of applied voltage, electrolysis time and electrolyte concentration and anode materials on decolorization degree and COD removal rate of indigo dyeing wastewater, providing a better electrochemical treatment system for dyehouse effluent.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the electrochemical corrosion behavior of a five-layer Al alloy composites (4343/4047/3003/4047/4343) with a thickness of 0.2 mm in NaCl solution.

Design/methodology/approach

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization curve and morphology analyses were used to study the corrosion behavior of the Al alloy composites from cross-sectional and plane directions.

Findings

The corrosion resistance of the surface from the plane direction was higher than that from the cross sections. Si-enrich particles were observed in the outer 4047/4343 layer, and AlFeCuMnBi phases were identified in the core 3003 layer. The galvanic coupling between the Si-enrich particle and the Al matrix accelerated the dissolution Al matrix.

Originality/value

This work lays the experimental foundation for corrosion mechanism of the Al alloy composite plate.

Abstract

Purpose

International trade transactions, extracted from customs declarations, include several fields, among which the product description and the product category are the most important. The product category, also referred to as the Harmonised System Code (HS code), serves as a pivotal component for determining tax rates and administrative purposes. A predictive tool designed for product categories or HS codes becomes an important resource aiding traders in their decision to choose a suitable code. This tool is instrumental in preventing misclassification arising from the ambiguities present in product nomenclature, thus mitigating the challenges associated with code interpretation. Moreover, deploying this tool would streamline the validation process for government officers dealing with extensive transactions, optimising their workload and enhancing tax revenue collection within this domain.

Design/methodology/approach

This study introduces a methodology focused on the generation of sentence embeddings for trade transactions, employing Sentence BERT (SBERT) framework in conjunction with the Multiple Negative Ranking (MNR) Loss function following a contrastive learning paradigm. The procedure involves the construction of pairwise samples, including anchors and positive transactions. The proposed method is evaluated using two publicly available real-world datasets, specifically the India Import 2016 and United States Import 2018 datasets, to fine-tune the SBERT model. Several configurations involving pooling strategies, loss functions, and training parameters are explored within the experimental setup. The acquired representations serve as inputs for traditional machine learning algorithms employed in predicting the product categories within trade transactions.

Findings

Encoding trade transactions utilising SBERT with MNR loss facilitates the creation of enhanced embeddings that exhibit improved representational capacity. These fixed-length embeddings serve as adaptable inputs for training machine learning models, including support vector machine (SVM) and random forest, intended for downstream tasks of HS code classification. Empirical evidence supports the superior performance of our proposed approach compared to fine-tuning transformer-based models in the domain of trade transaction classification.

Originality/value

Our approach generates more representative sentence embeddings by creating the network architectures from scratch with the SBERT framework. Instead of exploiting a data augmentation method generally used in contrastive learning for measuring the similarity between the samples, we arranged positive samples following a supervised paradigm and determined loss through distance learning metrics. This process involves continuous updating of the Siamese or bi-encoder network to produce embeddings derived from commodity transactions. This strategy aims to ensure that similar concepts of transactions within the same class converge closer within the feature embedding space, thereby improving the performance of downstream tasks.

Abstract

Purpose

Porosity is a commonly analyzed defect in the laser-based additive manufacturing processes owing to the enormous thermal gradient caused by repeated melting and solidification. Currently, the porosity estimation is limited to powder bed fusion. The porosity estimation needs to be explored in the laser melting deposition (LMD) process, particularly analytical models that provide cost- and time-effective solutions compared to finite element analysis. For this purpose, this study aims to formulate two mathematical models for deposited layer dimensions and corresponding porosity in the LMD process.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, analytical models have been proposed. Initially, deposited layer dimensions, including layer height, width and depth, were calculated based on the operating parameters. These outputs were introduced in the second model to estimate the part porosity. The models were validated with experimental data for Ti6Al4V depositions on Ti6Al4V substrate. A calibration curve (CC) was also developed for Ti6Al4V material and characterized using X-ray computed tomography. The models were also validated with the experimental results adopted from literature. The validated models were linked with the deep neural network (DNN) for its training and testing using a total of 6,703 computations with 1,500 iterations. Here, laser power, laser scanning speed and powder feeding rate were selected inputs, whereas porosity was set as an output.

Findings

The computations indicate that owing to the simultaneous inclusion of powder particulates, the powder elements use a substantial percentage of the laser beam energy for their melting, resulting in laser beam energy attenuation and reducing thermal value at the substrate. The primary operating parameters are directly correlated with the number of layers and total height in CC. Through X-ray computed tomography analyses, the number of layers showed a straightforward correlation with mean sphericity, while a converse relation was identified with the number, mean volume and mean diameter of pores. DNN and analytical models showed 2%–3% and 7%–9% mean absolute deviations, respectively, compared to the experimental results.

Originality/value

This research provides a unique solution for LMD porosity estimation by linking the developed analytical computational models with artificial neural networking. The presented framework predicts the porosity in the LMD-ed parts efficiently.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore recent national human resource development (NHRD) practices in China through a literature review focusing on programs and activities that represent the roles and interactions among the government, industry and universities.

Design/methodology/approach

To effectively consolidate previous work and conceptualize the recent development of the NHRD practices in China, a semi-narrative literature review was used to explore and analyze NHRD-related functions and activities.

Findings

Findings from the literature review showed that although the central government still plays a predominant role in China, universities and corporations are increasingly playing a critical role in developing an innovative and skilled workforce. At the regional level, NHRD initiatives in China have been increasingly undertaken by universities, industry and government–industry–university collaborations. The authors also found a disparity between developed and underdeveloped regions in terms of NHRD in China.

Research limitations/implications

This study used the triple helix model as a framework that provides an insightful lens for researchers to examine how various social entities interact with each other and jointly contribute to NHRD. Further case studies are needed to generate evidence-based knowledge to the NHRD literature.

Practical implications

A more systematic NHRD leadership structure at both the national and local level is desired to unleash the potential of bottom-up development and active government–industry–university collaboration. To counter regional divergence in NHRD in China, intra- and cross-regional collaborations are helpful in improving resources distribution and workforce development.

Originality/value

Based on open system theory, this study focused on programs and activities that represent the roles and interactions among the government, industry and university in Chinese NHRD through the lens of the triple helix model. In addition, this study offers a conceptual model of Chinese NHRD to help scholars and practitioners understand the transitional efforts in NHRD.
