Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to reveal the mechanism of CEO overconfidence in the digital transformation of specialized, refined, distinctive and innovative (SRDI) enterprises, thereby enriching research related to upper echelons theory and corporate digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses listed SRDI companies in China from 2017 to 2022 as a sample and adopts a fixed-effects regression model to analyze the direct, mediating, and moderating effects of CEO overconfidence on corporate digital transformation.

Findings

First, CEO overconfidence significantly promotes SRDI enterprises' digital transformation. Second, according to the “cognition-behavior-outcome” model, we found that entrepreneurial orientation plays a mediating role. Third, based on the principle of procedural rationality and the interaction perspective between the CEO and the executive team, we introduce the heterogeneity of the executive team as a moderating variable. Our findings indicate that age heterogeneity within the executive team has a negative moderating effect, whereas educational and occupational heterogeneities have positive moderating effects.

Originality/value

This study expands on earlier research that focuses primarily on CEO demographic characteristics. It enriches the analytical perspective of upper echelons theory on corporate digital transformation by analyzing the psychological characteristics of CEOs, that is, overconfidence and its mediating pathways. Moreover, this study goes beyond the previous literature that does not differentiate between CEOs and executive teams by introducing the concept of CEOs' interactions with the executive team and including the heterogeneity of the executive team as a moderating variable in the literature. Thus, continuing to deepen the application of upper echelons theory to corporate digital transformation. Additionally, this study contributes to the literature on the positive consequences of overconfidence.

Abstract

Purpose

Rhetorical figures are frequently used in English-Chinese advertisement translation, but their impact on consumers is an under-studied issue. This research aims to explore Chinese consumers’ perception of two categories of rhetorical figures in bilingual advertising, namely schemes and tropes, via an eye-tracking experiment.

Design/methodology/approach

It takes rhyme and antithesis as representative examples of schemes and takes metaphor as an example of tropes. Eighty-six native Chinese speakers with satisfactory English proficiency participated in the experiment. Thirty English slogans without rhetorical figures were selected for the experiment. Two parallel Chinese versions were prepared, one with rhetorical figures and the other without. Participants were randomly assigned to read the English version and one Chinese version.

Findings

Data analyses show that the translations with rhetorical figures generally involve higher fixation duration or count, smaller saccade amplitude and higher subjective ratings. In particular, the impact of metaphor is more prominent than that of rhymes and antitheses. Still, English texts receive higher ratings than Chinese translations except for cases where metaphors are used in translations.

Practical implications

The results suggest that incorporating rhetorical figures particularly tropes into Chinese translations is effective in increasing Chinese consumers’ attention and processing depth and to present English advertisements together with Chinese translations can be helpful for affecting their attitude.

Originality/value

It applies the eye-tracking approach to explore Chinese consumers’ perception of rhetorical figures. It provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of tropes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a combined method for three-dimensional incompressible flow and heat transfer by the spectral collocation method (SCM) and the artificial compressibility method (ACM), and further to study the performance of the combined method SCM-ACM for three-dimensional incompressible flow and heat transfer.

Design/methodology/approach

The partial differentials in space are discretized by the SCM with Chebyshev polynomial and Chebyshev–Gauss–Lobbatto collocation points. The unsteady artificial compressibility equations are solved to obtain the steady results by the ACM. Three-dimensional exact solutions with trigonometric function form and exponential function form are constructed to test the accuracy of the combined method.

Findings

The SCM-ACM is developed successfully for three-dimensional incompressible flow and heat transfer with high accuracy that the minimum value of variance can reach. The accuracy increases exponentially along with time marching steps. The accuracy is also improved exponentially with the increasing of nodes before stable accuracy is achieved, while it keeps stably with the increasing of the time step. The central processing unit time increases exponentially with the increasing of nodes and decreasing of the time step.

Research limitations/implications

It is difficult for the implementation of the implicit scheme by the developed SCM-ACM. The SCM-ACM can be used for solving unsteady impressible fluid flow and heat transfer.

Practical implications

The SCM-ACM is applied for two classic cases of lid-driven cavity flow and natural convection in cubic cavities. The present results show good agreement with the published results with much fewer nodes.

Originality/value

The combined method SCM-ACM is developed, firstly, for solving three-dimensional incompressible fluid flow and heat transfer by the SCM and ACM. The performance of SCM-ACM is investigated. This combined method provides a new choice for solving three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer with high accuracy.

This study aims to use a thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) algorithm incorporating an Eyring flow model to solve a steady-state contact in simple sliding motion.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to use a thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) algorithm incorporating an Eyring flow model to solve a steady-state contact in simple sliding motion.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model was used to investigate the effect of starvation on the surface dimple phenomenon by gradually reducing the thickness of the inlet oil layer.

Findings

The increase in the starvation degree reduces the dimple depth, film thickness, the pressure peak and the temperature rise. Under the severe starvation condition, the dimple is eliminated so that the EHL contact becomes partly parched. In elliptical results, for the same starvation parameters, the oil replenishment is stronger than that in circular contact.

Originality/value

This paper fulfils an exploration to study how the oil starvation influences the surface dimple phenomenon.

Abstract

Purpose

Vibration exists widely in all machineries working under high speed. The unpredictability of vibration and the change of the relative surface speed may result in difficulties in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis. By far, few studies on EHL relating to vibration have been published. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of the vertical vibrations and the influence of temperature on the thermal EHL contacts.

Design/methodology/approach

The lubricant was assumed to be Newtonian fluid. The time-dependent numerical solutions were achieved instant after instant in each period of the vibration. At each instant, the pressure field was solved with a multi-level technique, the surface deformation was solved with a multi-level multi-integration method and the temperature filed was solved with a finite different scheme through a sweeping progress. The periodic error was checked at each end of the vibration period until the responses of pressure, film thickness and temperature were all periodic functions with the frequency of the roller’s vibrations.

Findings

The results reveal that normal vibration produces little drastic change of pressure, film thickness and temperature in EHL. Under some conditions, the vibrations of the roller can produce transient dimples within the contact conjunction. It is also showed that the lubrication in the same sliding is better than the opposite sliding.

Research limitations/implications

For the unpredictability of vibration, it is not easy to do the experiment to realize a real comparison with numerical results. The reach does not show any verification and consider the effect of non-Newtonian fluid.

Originality/value

The effect of the vertical vibrations on the thermal EHL point contact hast been studied. The effects of both the amplitude and the frequency on the predicted load-carrying capacity, minimum film thickness, center pressure and center temperature and the coefficient of friction were investigated. The role of the thermal effect was given.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the industrial data between 2000 and 2016, this study analysed the process of coupling and coordinated development of technological innovation and standardisation. Accordingly, the study considered the high-tech industry (five sub-sectors) in China as the research object.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the summary of innovation and standardisation literature review, this study constructed a theoretical model of the influence of technological innovation and standardisation on industrial development from the perspective of the coupling system. Furthermore, the study employed multivariate linear regression analysis to explore coupling coordination relationships.

Findings

The study results revealed that high coupling coordination between technological innovation and standardisation is highly conducive to industrial development. Moreover, requirements for standardisation levels differ owing to different stages and characteristics in each segmented industry.

Originality/value

This study primarily contributes to the literature by using a bibliometrics tool to summarise related literature on innovation and standardisation and provides a new perspective of reviewing, and it also offers new evidence on the coupling coordination relationship between innovation and standardisation in the high-tech industry.

Abstract

Purpose

As one of the omnichannel sales models, “buy online and pick up in store” (BOPS) not only is used in the commercial field but also has gradually attracted many scholars’ interests. However, although there are numerous research ideas, most of the current work is still limited to theoretical and empirical research, and few scholars study BOPS through models. This paper aims to discuss the best market conditions and opportunities for the implementation of BOPS against the backdrop of omnichannel by means of mathematical models and data simulations and discuss the optimal price–service strategies under different sales models.

Design/methodology/approach

First, from the perspective of different consumer shopping types, this paper separately divides consumers into different groups in traditional “dual channel” and BOPS models. Then, the authors analyze the impact of company market size, consumer service sensitivity and the scale of BOPS on companies’ strategies and the profit of the supply chain. Subsequently, they conduct an empirical analysis through specific values. Finally, the authors further expand the model on the basis of the original research, and discuss the retailer’s fairness concerns and unit compensation strategy to ensure that the research content is more rigorous.

Findings

It is observed that whether companies adopt BOPS depends on consumers’ service sensitivity degree and the scale of BOPS consumers and online retailers: when the sensitivity and the proportion of online consumers are high or the number of BOPS consumers is large, it is more advantageous for companies to implement BOPS. Moreover, companies should not only consider the market scale and production cost but also have a precise orientation of consumers’ experience sensitivity and willingness to engage in extra consumption when making price and service strategies. At the same time, the compensation strategy of companies and the peer-regarding fairness concern behavior of offline retailers will affect the optimal price and service strategy in the BOPS model.

Social implications

These results provide managerial insights for companies preparing to implement BOPS and promote the development of relevant theories in the channel field.

Originality/value

At present, most of the research on BOPS is based on empirical reviews. However, this paper analyzes the applicability and feasibility of implementing BOPS by using specific models, and it will provide some reference for companies preparing to implement BOPS. In addition, this paper also discusses the unit compensation strategy and peer-regarding fairness concern behavior in the BOPS model, which have not been studied by relevant scholars.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate whether firms purchase directors' and officers' liability (D&O) insurance when the country-level economic policy uncertainty (EPU) is high.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses D&O insurance data from Chinese listed firms between 2003 and 2019 to conduct regression analyses to examine the association between D&O insurance and EPU.

Findings

The results show that government EPU, despite being an exogenous factor, increases the likelihood of firms' purchasing D&O insurance, and this effect is more pronounced when firms are exposed to great share price crash risk and high litigation risk, suggesting that firms intend to purchase D&O insurance possibly due to the accentuated stock price crash risk and litigation risk associated with EPU. In addition, the results indicate that the effect of EPU on the D&O insurance purchase decision is moderated by the provincial capital market development and internal control quality.

Practical implications

The study highlights the role of uncertain economic policies in shareholder approval of D&O insurance purchases.

Originality/value

The study enriches the literature on the determinants of D&O insurance purchases by documenting novel evidence that country-level EPU is a key institutional factor shaping firms' decisions to purchase D&O insurance.
