Abstract

Anode weight loss and polarization studies of brass in nitric, hydrochloric and sulphuric acids indicate that the copper dissolves in the cuprous state in hydrochloric acid whereas it is in cupric form in the other two acids. In nitric acid the local cell corrosion is completely stopped, when made sufficiently anodic showing a positive difference effect.

Abstract

n‐butylamine is a fairly satisfactory inhibitor for the corrosion of aluminium‐manganese alloy in hydrochloric acid solutions. Polarisation studies indicate that the anode polarisation is negligible, whereas the cathode polarisation is appreciable and is increased by the inhibitor. The Tafel plot holds good in this case. The dissolution of the metal is electrochemical in character. The corrosion process with this amine appears to be under cathodic control.

Abstract

The dock gate cable seen in the photograph below is submerged in sea‐water for 12 hours out of every 24. Nine years ago an inspection showed the appearance of rust on the same cable and a replacement was considered. However, it was decided to try an application of the anti‐corrosive lubricant Voler V 200 R, a graphited compound made by Revol Ltd. The cable was ‘unlocked’ and impregnated with the compound. In the nine years since, no further trouble has been experienced. Another example of the protection afforded by V 200 R in the marine field is its use on the cables of Arctic survey ships. After treatment with the compound it is claimed that the life of these cables has been quadrupled.

Abstract

The influence of a newly synthesised organic compound on the inhibition of corrosion of arsenical aluminium brass in a NaCl solution has been investigated using weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization studies and impedance measurements. Different corrosion kinetic parameters obtained from polarisation studies reveal that the inhibition of corrosion of arsenical aluminium brass in NaCl is under mixed control. UV‐reflectance, X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic studies have also been carried out to understand the mechanism of inhibition of corrosion, and also the morphological changes on the surface of the alloy. The adsorption of this compound on the metal surface from 3.5% NaCl solution is found to obey Temkin’s adsorption isotherm.

Abstract

The power and usefulness of perceived risk theory in understanding shoppers’ behaviour has been demonstrated many times over recent years in the UK by the numerous food scares. The article explores how retailers use perceived risk in their strategies and develops the links between store attributes and risk dimensions. This re‐interpretation of previous store‐image studies provides a new conceptual framework for understanding store image and deepens our knowledge of how risk and risk‐reduction are operationalised in practice. The paper also reviews some evidence on factors which affect shoppers’ risk perceptions, e.g. age, gender, group discussion, brand name and shopping channel and discusses how the risk concept can be used by food retailers as well as presenting some ideas for future research.

Abstract

Reviews symmetrical communication as corporate strategy. Qualitative data gathered from owners and managers of a wide variety of small businesses, using both questionnaires and interviews, points to the fact that, in common with many other areas of small business management, the practice of corporate communication is largely unplanned. Concludes that it is an area which is characterized by a lack of understanding both of what corporate communication is and how it can be of benefit to the small business.
