Abstract
Purpose
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a huge loss of human life worldwide and presents an unprecedented challenge to public health, food systems and the world of work. Tens of millions of people are at risk of falling into extreme poverty due to loss of their carriers. Mainly, the people who work in public places are impacted due to this decease. The frontline warriors such as doctors, health workers, sweepers and policemen showed their effort to reduce the spreading of the virus. In this paper gives the detailed view of how the corona virus evaluated and how it spread from one person to another person and how we prevent this virus. The purpose of the paper, detailed about the diagnosis of the virus in the human body. There are some tests associated to know the presence of virus in our body; these are nose test, chest scan and CT scan of lungs.
Design/methodology/approach
Molecular analysis methods such as antibody or enzyme tests are used to assess whether the infection is present. The most common lancing techniques include using a cotton swab is in the back of the neck. Then hands over the sample to the doctor for examination. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is performed on the sample. This test screens for viral DNA. A CO19 PCR test can detect unique SARS-2 gene products. If one of these genes is ignored, it will return as an invalid result This test is useful only for patients who are already suffering from COVID-19. You cannot know if anyone has the infection, and they cannot say for sure whether they ever did. Serological tests are particularly useful for detecting cases of infection with mild or no symptom.
Findings
In this paper, the different tests provided to diagnosis the virus and the prevention measures to be taken to prevent the virus from spreading from one person to another are explained.
Originality/value

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and build a deep learning model that can furnish statistics of COVID-19 and is able to forecast pandemic outbreak using Kaggle open research COVID-19 data set. As COVID-19 has an up-to-date data collection from the government, deep learning techniques can be used to predict future outbreak of coronavirus. The existing long short-term memory (LSTM) model is fine-tuned to forecast the outbreak of COVID-19 with better accuracy, and an empirical data exploration with advanced picturing has been made to comprehend the outbreak of coronavirus.
Design/methodology/approach
This research work presents a fine-tuned LSTM deep learning model using three hidden layers, 200 LSTM unit cells, one activation function ReLu, Adam optimizer, loss function is mean square error, the number of epochs 200 and finally one dense layer to predict one value each time.
Findings
LSTM is found to be more effective in forecasting future predictions. Hence, fine-tuned LSTM model predicts accurate results when applied to COVID-19 data set.
Originality/value
The fine-tuned LSTM model is developed and tested for the first time on COVID-19 data set to forecast outbreak of pandemic according to the authors’ knowledge.

The purpose of this paper is to measure technical efficiency of Indian thermal power sector employing the recent by-production approach.
Design/methodology/approach
The by-production approach is used in conjunction with data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of India to compute the output-based Färe, Grosskopf, Lovell (FGL) efficiency index and its decomposition into productive and environmental efficiency indexes for the ITPPs
Findings
The authors show that given the aggregated nature of data on coal reported by CEA, CEA’s computation of CO2 emissions through a deterministic linear formula that does not distinguish between different coal types and the tiny share of oil in coal-based power plants, the computed output-based environmental efficiency indexes are no longer informative. Meaningful measurement of environmental efficiency using CEA data is possible only along the dimension of the coal input. Productive efficiency is positively associated with the engineering concept of thermodynamic/energy efficiency and is also high for power plants with high operating availabilities reflecting better management and O&M practices. Both these factors are high for private and centrally owned as opposed to state-owned power-generating companies. The example of Sipat demonstrates the importance of (ultra)supercritical technologies in increasing productive and thermodynamic efficiencies of the ITPPs, while also reducing CO2 emitted per unit of the net electricity generated.
Originality/value
This paper uses the by-production approach for the first time to measure technical efficiency of ITPPs and highlights how the nature of the Indian data impacts on efficiency measurement.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to establish the key determinants of the effectiveness of the manager–subordinate relationships and identify the different factors contributing to the effectiveness of this relationship in an Indian context. A model analyzing personal and professional need fulfillment of the subordinates has been presented.
Design/methodology/approach
The effectiveness of the manager–subordinate relationship was empirically analyzed using impact message inventory- circumplex (IMI-C).Close-ended self-administered survey was used to measure the variables associated with the effectiveness of the manager–subordinate relationship. Total 324 questionnaires were distributed online among employees of mid-sized IT service organizations operating in India, and 138 valid responses were collected.
Findings
Results show that managerial relationship effectiveness is influenced by the manager’s affiliation scores, previous work experience and ability to address the personal and professional needs of employees. Further effectiveness of manager–subordinate relationship is enhanced in a friendly workplace where managers are adequately empowered to acknowledge employee needs.
Research limitations/implications
The paper is empirical in nature and provides a future direction for more research in the area of manager–subordinate relationship in a workplace by exploring more variables.
Practical implications
Derived from an extensive study of current and impending manager – subordinate relationship, the findings may aid many organization and policymakers to develop and refine their people practices to engage human capital with the ulterior aim of having a conducive relationship between the manager and subordinate in the organization.
Originality/value
The present research emphasizes the importance of a healthy relationship between the manager and the subordinate in a digitalized workplace. This study is unique, as it provides insights into the manager–subordinate relationship and the factors influencing the association. The study gives a better understanding of the factors that make the manager–subordinate relationship more effective and fulfilling.

This study aims to explore AI’s potential impact on the broader landscape of higher education in Tanzania. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion of AI’s potential to transform higher education and highlights the ethical considerations and challenges that must be addressed to ensure its successful implementation. This study informs future research and policy decisions in education and technology by providing a detailed understanding of AI’s perceived benefits and challenges in higher education.
Design/methodology/approach
A mixed-methods approach was used, which involves collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to understand the research problem comprehensively. This approach allowed data triangulation and led to a more robust and detailed understanding of this study.
Findings
In this study, it was discovered that enhanced assessment, time-saving, personalized learning, improved accessibility and detecting cheating are the perceived benefits of AI as a tool for enhancing learning in higher education, while cost and infrastructure, academic misconduct, data privacy and security, bias and ethical concerns and lack of human interaction are the perceived challenges of AI as a tool for enhancing learning in higher education. Further, it was revealed that students are more accepting of using AI tools in the classroom because they think they are more effective and engaging. On the other hand, faculty were more cautious and skeptical about employing AI tools in the classroom because they worried about how it would affect their teaching methods and job security.
Research limitations/implications
The data collection was not conducted face-to-face. To fully capture respondents’ emotional responses, feelings, facial expressions, reactions, or body language was challenging. However, a sufficient number of individuals who participated were very cooperative, and their knowledge was very beneficial in understanding the topic.
Originality/value
A unique view of this study is a clear understanding of the perceived benefits and challenges of using AI as a tool for enhancing learning in higher education, as well as the variations in these perceptions among students and faculty. By examining the perspectives of both groups, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex role of AI in higher education. Understanding the broader implications of AI in higher education can inform policy decisions and ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically.

This study aims investigate in-service teachers’ perspectives on the integration of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven chatbot, into United Arab Emirates (UAE) private schools. As the UAE progresses towards a knowledge-based economy, aligning with the goals of the UAE 2030 vision, this research assesses the capacity of ChatGPT to enhance the educational experience within the framework of technological pedagogical content knowledge.
Design/methodology/approach
A mixed-methods approach is used, combining a survey assessing teachers’ attitudes and a thematic analysis of open-ended responses, to explore the effectiveness, challenges and pedagogical implications of ChatGPT’s use in the classroom.
Findings
Findings reveal that teachers value ChatGPT for its potential to individualize learning and streamline the creation of educational materials, aligning with the shift towards student-centred approaches and the demands of 21st-century skills. However, significant challenges are noted, including ethical concerns, the need for reliable content and a necessity for extensive professional development to fully realize ChatGPT’s benefits.
Practical implications
While ChatGPT transforms teaching and learning practices, realizing this potential requires addressing critical issues through adaptive policy-making, continuous educator training and thoughtful integration into the curriculum.
Originality/value
The study highlights the importance of a collaborative approach to dealing with the details of AI in education, ensuring that advancements like ChatGPT align with the evolving educational paradigms of the UAE.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report the research findings of an evaluation of the impact of continuing education programs (CEPs) on library information science (LIS) professionals of academic libraries in Mumbai, India. The paper also introduces Donald Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation for Library Science research in the area of program evaluation.
Design/methodology/approach
The impact of CEPs was evaluated using Donald Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation using survey method. The impact was evaluated at four levels; reaction, learning, behavior and results. The population of the present study included 344 LIS professionals working at colleges libraries affiliated to University of Mumbai and Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University in Mumbai, India. The data collected through questionnaire were supplemented by five specimen interviews of heads of institutions of the academic librarians who had attended more than five CEPs in five years, 2009-2013.
Findings
The findings of the study revealed that professionals were satisfied with CEP attendance; keen on gaining more knowledge and transferring the acquired knowledge and skills at their workplaces and interested in implementing the learning to achieve results. The reasons given by academic librarians on not implementing the learning in the library indicated that there were hindrances like lack of management support, lack of technical expertise, inadequate staff in the library, poor IT Infrastructure, etc. in transferring the learning at work.
Research limitations/implications
The study was based on self-perceptions of respondents. The limitation of self-perception was eliminated to some extent by supplementing qualitative data wherever required. CEPs included conferences, seminars, workshops, refresher courses, orientation programs and online courses. Pre-test and post-test recommended by the Kirkpatrick model could not be conducted as the researcher has not adopted experimental design. The data of feedback from the organizers and content of the CEPs attended by respondents were not analyzed in the study.
Practical implications
The paper describes the implementation of Kirkpatrick model to evaluate the CEPs, which can be used by the organizers or institutions to evaluate the impact of CEPs in future. This will help them to improve upon the contents of CEPs making them more relevant and effective.
Social implications
Evaluation of CEPs will be useful to ensure the effectiveness of CEPs and performance of LIS professionals.
Originality/value
This paper reports an original research initiative undertaken to evaluate the impact of CEPs attended by LIS professionals of Indian academic libraries in Mumbai, India. It fills the gap in LIS research. The application of Donald Kirkpatrick model of Training evaluation is also valuable for LIS research.

The purpose of this study is to emphasize on women empowerment that leads to a new paradigm shift of Saudi woman into labor force. This study also outlines how Saudi Government has formulated several policies and reforms to empower women in the workplace, especially gender equality. Also, this study will discourse a clear idea on numerous measures initiated by Saudi Government on how to empower Saudi women in the labor force and what would be the impact of women empowerment and gender equality on Saudi economy.
Design/methodology/approach
The research methodology has undertaken the Saudi feminization approach that emphasizes solely on uplifting women empowerment within the context of social changes that are arising in Saudi Arabia. The data analyzed comes from the primary data statistics report that depicts 10 years of data from general authority for statistics (GaStat) for the period ranging from 2010–2016 (Q2) and 2016 –2020 along with global gender gap index (GGGI) for the period of 2006, 2017 and 2020. Additionally, data was considered from the latest articles, Saudi news, statistics revealed by “Pew Research Center,” international labor organization (ILO, 2020), which depicts the involvement of Saudi women at international level.
Findings
The data were analyzed from GaStat for the period ranging from 2010–2016 (Q2) and 2016–2020 along with GGGI for the period of 2006, 2017 and 2020 that has shown drastic changes in inspiring Saudi women empowerment pertaining to the labor market, the educational field, economic participation and gender equality. The most interesting point was that the total Saudi employed persons, especially males are double of females’ ratio. It depicts that until Q3 and Q4, 2018 females were still facing unemployment phase and their economic participation was less in comparison with male Saudis. However, there found to have a new paradigm shift; rising of Saudi women in various sectors in the year 2019 where unemployment decreased to 5.7%, labor force participation at 58.8%.
Social implications
Saudi Arabia is stringing very hard to develop its economy over the next decade and beyond and have strong-minded to strengthen the contribution of women to development of society and economy. Currently, Saudi women have found ample job opportunities welcoming them in various sectors. Furthermore, they can work in numerous professions and fields that were formerly limited to men. According to Leyal Khalife (2019, July 1) and the statistics released by “Pew Research Center,” Saudi Arabia has experienced the highest growth rate – among G20 countries –of women joining the workforce in the past 20 years. The data revealed that women accounted for 23% of Saudi’s workforce in 2018 – a rise of 7% increase since 2018. Finally, today Saudi Arabia has shown the highest growth rate among G20 states, including Australia, Germany, Brazil and others.
Originality/value
The latest reforms emphasizes on minimizing the gender gap and inspire young girls to build a career path. This procedure specifies that Saudi female should formulate their tactics and approaches to encounter gender disparity and attain social fairness and equality not specific to education only but consider all the matters of life pertaining to context of male-dominating societies.

Purpose
This current paper aims to review the literature for two main reasons. First, to outline the propositions of women empowerment in manifesto of “Vision 2030”and how these implementations have added to woman’s success in different facets of the economy. Second, to review the current reforms made to empower woman under Saudi law published in 08/2019 when the Council of Ministers presented numerous revisions to civil and labour laws that increase women’s rights and discourse concerns of travel, employment and finance.
Design/methodology/approach
The investigation is found on both an analysis of the secondary literature including records and information pertaining to the current economic alterations and improvements influencing women.
Findings
Despite the various limitations in Saudi Arabia, many Saudi women are joining the workforce. Nowadays, Saudi female are selecting new professions which were previously unexplored. Study revealed that Saudi females in different organizational framework are equally competent as male in higher ranks, if not slightly higher (Al-Shamrani, 2015). Within this context, Saudi Arabia was labelled as one of the economies with the most progress towards gender equality since 2017 in the World Bank’s Women, Business and The Law 2020 report; the report attributed this advancement to the increases in freedom of movement and economic opportunities for women as a result of the aforementioned reforms.
Originality/value

Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the status of women’s empowerment and its socio-economic determinants based on living conditions across 22 Indian states and Union Territories by constructing a composite women empowerment index of six components including women participation in three household decisions(%) based on data from the National Family Health Survey(NFHS)-5, Phase I.
Design/methodology/approach
We carry out a principal component analysis (PCA) for constructing a women empowerment index based on the above six indicators using a correlation matrix. Then we apply a static panel data approach to find out the role of socio-economic determinants such as per capita income (State level per capita GDP), years of schooling, the underage marriage of girls, the standard of living conditions such as access to safe drinking water, sanitization facility, use of iodized salt, etc.
Findings
The constructed composite index based on PCA determines one composite index for each time period, that is 2015–2016 and 2019–2020. The static panel regression is run for the composite index and six components of the index. The regression results considering eight socioeconomic and living conditions parameters demonstrate that the variables like the use of clean fuel cooking, the underage marriage of women, access to improved sanitation facility have an important impact in explaining variations in women empowerment over the years.
Originality/value
The major observations of this study in understanding the status and determinants of women empowerment across Indian states clearly show that women education is the key to improving women empowerment apart from several living condition variables.
