Abstract

This chapter examines sexually violent hazing as a form of group sexual assault, which involves multiple perpetrators in a single sexually violent act, in the context of junior men's hockey in Canada. Research outside of the context of sport suggests that group sexual assaults are relatively rare. However, available evidence suggests that the prevalence of group sexual assaults perpetrated by male junior hockey players is significantly disproportionate to perpetration rates by men who do not participate in competitive sports. Drawing on examples from junior men's hockey in Canada, three main forms of group sexual assault are identified and explored in which multiple male junior hockey players have been reported for sexually assaulting: (1) new male team members through sexually violent hazing rituals, (2) female victims during team rookie nights or initiation parties and (3) a single female victim away from team activities. The data analysed include media files and written legal decisions involving group sexual assault allegations against 65 Canadian junior men's hockey players. This chapter reveals that each form is interconnected within the misogynistic culture of junior men's hockey in Canada, where group sexual assaults have long been tolerated, silenced and ignored by teams, leagues and legal officials.

In manufacturing, the use of computer simulation has led to significant benefits: risk reduction, greater understanding, operating cost reduction, lead time reduction, faster plant changes, and capital cost reduction. However, these benefits are rarely attained, since only a few manufacturing managers are aware of the technology. Discusses simulation, its benefits and the range of manufacturing issues to which it can be applied. A case study describes how simulation was used at the Ford Motor Company to improve work organization and determine human resource requirements.

Abstract

Purpose

Power outages which may be triggered, for example, by natural hazards and system failures are a common phenomenon, associated with large impacts on society including the healthcare sector. Minimising adverse impacts effectively requires an analysis of possible impacts and the identification of measures aiming at reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience.

Design/methodology/approach

To systematically identify impacts as well as preparation, mitigation and recovery (PMR) measures, a moderated workshop with participants representing different healthcare sub‐sectors in Germany was conducted and complemented by semi‐structured interviews and a thorough analysis of literature. Impacts were determined for three scenarios of power outage duration, <8, 8‐24 and >24 hours.

Findings

Whereas hospitals are in general well prepared with respect to shorter outages, due to obligatory emergency power in Germany, outpatient medical care, nursing homes (NH) and, in particular, home‐care nursing are early affected. Failure of these sub‐sectors puts additional strains on hospitals. If outages last more than one day and are associated with failure of other critical infrastructures (CIs), especially water supply, hospitals may be severely affected. Effective preparation and mitigation measures identified based on a facility‐specific impact analysis, as well as good cooperation between actors, may reduce impacts.

Originality/value

The largely case‐study‐based literature is complemented by a systematic and extensive analysis of direct and indirect impacts on the main healthcare sub‐sectors in Germany, followed by an identification of specific PMR measures. As a novelty outage duration is explicitly accounted for. Also, interdependencies between the healthcare sub‐sectors as well as dependencies on other CI are considered.

Abstract

Anna Julia Cooper and Septima Poinsette Clark were two prominent late 19th- and early 20th-century educators. Cooper and Clark taught African American students in federally sanctioned, segregated schools in the South. Drawing on womanist thought as a theoretical lens, this chapter argues that Cooper and Clark’s intellectual thoughts on race, racism, education, and pedagogy informed their teaching practices. Influenced by their socio-cultural, historical, familial, and education, they implemented antioppressionist pedagogical practices as a way to empower their students and address the educational inequalities their students were subjected to in a highly racialized, violent, and repressive social order. Historical African American women educators’ social critiques on race and racism are rarely examined, particularly as they pertain to how their critiques influence their teaching practices. Cooper and Clark’s critiques about race and racism are pertinent to the story of education and racial empowerment during the Jim Crow era.

MERLIN was conceived in 1975 and put to sleep in 1979. It was archived in August 1979 when British Library suspended development. This paper presents a state of the art report of the archived version of MERLIN together with an account of the work that had not been completed. The functions that the archived MERLIN will support are described and the additional functions planned are outlined. Timescales are produced for completing the outstanding work and for subsequent possible implementation.

Abstract

The publication of the first results of the SERVQUAL instrument provoked a debate on how best to measure service quality. With more than a decade since the publication of those results many researchers have attempted to demonstrate the efficacy, or not, of the SERVQUAL instrument, or to develop their own measurement methods. This paper reviews this debate in relation to six key aspects: the purpose of the measurement instrument; the definition of service quality; models for service quality measurement; the dimensionality of service quality; issues relating to expectations; and the format of the measurement instrument. The main areas of agreement and disagreement are identified. As a result the continued use of the SERVQUAL instrument is called into question, and areas for further research are identified.

Abstract

Purpose

The deviant behavior (DB) of construction workers has always been a troubling event in project management. Although scholars continue to search for the main causes of this behavior to curb it at the source, the authors know less about the role and contribution of the team. This study aims to uncover the mechanisms and conditions under which collective moral judgment focus on self (CMJS) effectively enhances DB.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting Chinese construction enterprises as samples, a hierarchical linear model (HLM) is used to test the results of the hypothesis. Moderated mediating effects are used to analyze the potential mechanisms and boundary conditions of DB.

Findings

The results of the HLM analysis show that CMJS could directly and significantly induce DB, and moral disengagement (MD) plays a mediator role in this association. In addition, the positive relationship between MD and DB is stronger when performance-avoidance goal orientation (PaGO) or overqualification (Overq) is higher.

Research limitations/implications

The conditions and mechanisms that influence DB are not unique. Future study could examine the explanatory and weighting mechanisms of DB from other perspectives or to construct a framework and summarize the factors that may influence DB.

Practical implications

This study provides a rich theoretical basis for the prevention and correction of construction workers' DB in Chinese construction firms from the perspective of CMJS. In addition, objective moral judgments contribute to guiding employees' moral cognitive processes and positive work.

Originality/value

This study extends existing research on DB and advances the practical outcomes of construction project governance. It not only illustrates that CMJS has a direct impact on DB but also clarifies the mechanisms and conditions that predispose to the generation of DB, filling the research gap on construction workers' DB from cross-level mechanisms and also enriching the theoretical system for preventing this behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores the concept of information precarity, tracing some of its foundations to microaggressions and systemic injustices experienced by marginalized populations over time as race-based trauma, which functions as a mediating mechanism affecting the information practices of individuals and communities.

Design/methodology/approach

We describe the conceptual background of information precarity, information practices, microaggressions and race-based trauma, then illustrate these concepts through interviews and focus groups from a network of people and organizations helping a Latinx community navigate the COVID crisis.

Findings

The conceptual framework connecting information precarity with microaggressions and race-based trauma provides context and explanation for the information practices of marginalized communities living in information precarity.

Research limitations/implications

The study primarily explored adverse experiences such as microaggressions, which means that instances where Latinx individuals successfully navigated systemic barriers should be further explored. The study is based on the lived experiences of a specific group of Latinx individuals from a particular geographic area. Thus, findings may not be generalizable to all Latinx populations or other marginalized groups. This study’s findings suggest that efforts to improve information access must go beyond providing resources or making more policies. We recommend actions. Recognizing that race-based trauma affects how people engage with information highlights the importance of building and maintaining trust with marginalized communities.

Practical implications

In this study, we suggest actions. Recognizing that race-based trauma affects how people engage with information highlights the importance of building and maintaining trust with marginalized communities. Culturally sensitive outreach strategies such as support networks, community advisory boards, cultural liaisons or information brokers are crucial. Institutions can and should create environments where individuals feel safe to seek and share information with more personalized or community-specific approaches and a long-term commitment to information accessibility.

Originality/value

First, it illustrates the mechanisms through which precarity persists by showing how microaggressions are a systemic barrier that significantly shapes information practices and perpetuates vulnerability. Second, we demonstrated that race-based trauma is a mediating factor in information precarity, highlighting how racism emerges tangibly in everyday interactions as a mediating factor in information practices. Third, we show that information precarity, mediated by race-based trauma, can result in an information practice of avoidance as a protective mechanism to steer clear of unfair treatment and racist behavior.

Examines the role of appraisals as a way of improving productivity and effectiveness within successful organizations. Identifies ways in which appraisals help both employers and employees. Suggests that there is room for improvement in most performance appraisals and discusses various ideas. Computer software is one of the ways in which performance appraisals can be dealt with more proficiently. This article evaluates the three leading software programs available currently and provides a comparison of the features. Concludes that the products do not solve all the problems encountered in performance appraisals, but do give structure to the process and make this sort of appraisal easier to conduct.
