Abstract

Purpose

Over the past decade, national and international organisations concerned with regulating the architecture, engineering, construction and operations industry have been working to create guidelines for the integration of building information modelling (BIM) through the establishment of benchmarks to measure the quality and quantity of information in a given model. Until recently, these benchmarks – and BIM guidelines in general – have been developed for the design and construction of new projects, providing very little guidance for using BIM in the context of conservation and rehabilitation. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new benchmark specific to existing and heritage buildings developed by Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS).

Design/methodology/approach

To create the new benchmark, CIMS conducted a critical evaluation of established and emerging BIM guidelines including: Level of Development Specification 2016 (BIMFORUM), architecture, engineering and construction (Can) BIM Protocol (CanBIM), PAS 1102-2: Specification for Information Management for the Capital Delivery Phase of Construction Projects Using BIM (British Standards Institution) and Level of Accuracy Specification Guide (US Institute of Building Documentation).

Findings

Using the authors’ on-going work at the Parliament Hill National Historic Site in Ottawa, Canada, the CIMS created and applied a three-category system that evaluated the level of detail, information and accuracy within the building information model independently.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors discuss the CIMS’ work to date and propose next steps.

Abstract

The development, maintenance and improvement of quality efforts rest significantly on several internal and external enablers that encompass the building of quality infrastructure, changes in quality culture, transfer of technology, skills and management, integration of quality management practices, and so on. This paper reviews the contemporary quality concepts, and presents a glimpse into the major developments in the quality management domain in China. China’s experiences verified that the transformation process has gone through several phases, and finally attained the synergy of total quality management and compliance requirements of internationally recognized standards. China’s quality transformation efforts have been promoted through legislation and by the building of an institutional infrastructure. Moreover, the Chinese Government has played a directive role in shaping the context and institutional structure of Chinese enterprises and affecting the quality transformation efforts throughout the country.

Abstract

Systems thinking is a comprehensive approach to analysis and problem solving that examines the relationship between different parts of a system and the environment in which the system operates. Climate change and environmental issues directly affect humanitarian activities, and the impacts can threaten people’s lives and livelihoods. This chapter provides an overview of how the systems thinking approach can integrate with impact assessment techniques to determine the effects of climate change on organisations. An illustrated case of the internal and external interactions of a small vegetable farm is presented, along with an exercise of assessing the impact of climate change on organisations.

Abstract

Looks at consumer research in Greater China including Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Maps out the contributions within this area and guides future research. Examines the state of the art over the 1979‐97 period, with particular emphasis on the topics that have been researched, the extent of the theory development in the field and the methodologies used in conducting research. Uses content analysis to review 75 relevant articles. Suggests that, while a considerable breadth of topics have been researched, there remains much to be done, there is further room for theoretical development in Chinese consumer behaviour studies; and the methodologies used need improvement and further refinement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the timing of upward asset revaluations using large UK data.

Design/methodology/approach

A standard logistic model is used to examine the timing of upward asset revaluations. The result is further confirmed by using the ordinary least squares regression.

Findings

UK firms with higher industrial leverage and share performance two years before the revaluation year are inclined to write up their assets, suggesting that firms choose not to recognise good news unless it has been supported by their superior market performance and industry norm. This finding differs from the leverage reduction as well as the signalling objective suggested by previous literature.

Originality/value

This paper provides the first UK evidence on the timing of upward asset revaluation, which further enhance the understanding of the economic determinants of upward asset revaluations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, the authors set out to advance the thesis that lesson study should be considered as the signature pedagogy of teachers. Second, the authors want to argue that combining the core attributes of Chinese lesson study and Learning study will improve the practice of lesson study. Third, the authors attempt to demonstrate how teachers discover necessary aspects of the object of learning (here called “keys to learning”) through their engagement in Learning studies.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper conducted a contrastive analysis of two varieties of lesson studies: the Chinese lesson study and the Learning study.

Findings

Lesson studies form a field of varieties, but the commonality among them (i.e. the focus on the lesson) makes the lesson study a strong candidate for being “the signature pedagogy” of teachers. The most important attribute of the Chinese lesson study is its close connection to the daily work of teachers through its embeddedness in teacher research group (arguably the core organisational principle of the Chinese educational system). The most important attribute of the Learning study is its theoretical grounding which helps teachers create an environment for the students to discern and appropriate necessary aspects of the object of learning.

Practical implications

Different varieties may be enriched by including the two core attributes found in the Chinese lesson study and the Learning study.

Originality/value

Two empirical studies are used to exemplify how teacher might discover previously unknown necessary aspects of the object of learning (here called “keys to leaning”).
