Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explain the impact COVID-19 has had on diverse talent across the UK and explores how HR teams can now better support individuals of all backgrounds in the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

The author draws on his experience as Strategic Lead for Talent at MyKindaFuture, as well as being former Honorary Vice President of the Institute of Student Employers.

Findings

While COVID-19 has posed huge challenges to many underrepresented groups and put D&I initiatives on hold across the country, the past 18 months have also brought with it some positive progress, with many new opportunities beginning to open up for diverse talent.

Originality/value

Readers can benefit from the author’s unique perspective and experience of working with organisations to develop, implement and deliver talent strategies, with a focus on tapping into overlooked talent pools and then improving the diversity of that talent.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the changing and evolving apprenticeship market, with a specific focus on how it is beginning to impact the diversity of employer organisations across a range of industry sectors.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an opinion piece, contextualising the UK business approach to apprenticeships and the levy. It includes case studies showing how the attraction and recruitment of apprentices have been used to address diversity issues in different organisations.

Findings

Employers are pushing for:

  1. A broader range of apprenticeship standards (and for them to be signed off more quickly),

  2. More of the UK population to be aware of the high-quality apprenticeship roles available,

  3. The necessary company infrastructure and appropriate external activities, to ensure that the

    • Broadest range of talent applies for and secures apprentice roles.

    • Partnership with the training provider(s) works well.

    • Right level of support is in place for the apprentices, whether they are existing staff or new staff members (who are often young people, returners or ex-military).

    • Line managers can quickly and effectively integrate apprentices into their teams, so that they are adding value and making an impact.

Abstract

This book on uncertainty comprises the initial volume in a series titled “New Horizons in Managerial and Organizational Cognition”. We asked Frances Milliken and Gerard P. Hodgkinson, two well-known scholars who have made important contributions to our understanding of uncertainty to join us in this opening chapter to introduce this project. The brief bios found at the end of this volume cannot do justice to the broad range of their contributions, but our conversation gives a flavor of the kind of insights they have brought to managerial and organizational cognition (MOC). The editors thank them for helping launch the series with a decisive exploration of what defining uncertainty involves, how that might be done, why it is important, and how the task is changing. We were interested to discover that all five of us are currently involved in research that considers the nature and impact of uncertainty, and we hope that readers similarly find that paying attention to uncertainty contributes to their current projects. Working together, we can advance understanding of organizational settings and effective action, both for researchers and practitioners.

Abstract

This study draws on the natural resource-based view to analyze the effects of technologies, managerial commitment, and firm strategy on sustainability performance, in terms of both environmental and social profits. It also examines how the effect of green technologies on sustainability performance can be triggered by a managerial commitment to sustainability issues, and by the adoption of a prospector strategy. Multiple linear regression was used to test research hypotheses on a sample of 426 Spanish tourism firms. The results provide important insights into the importance of the adoption of explorer strategies fostering the strategic exploitation of green technologies to obtain new efficient processes, organizational procedures, and products. This research also shows the contingent moderating effect that managerial commitment exerts on the strategic implementation of green technologies for sustainability performance.

Abstract

Purpose

From an exploratory study of 37 large multinationals, this paper aims to report key findings, derive learnings for the design of corporate leadership systems and identify future research issues for a better understanding of individual leadership in corporate leadership systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The study reported builds on ten years of ongoing research on the nature of leadership, leadership communication, and institutional support structures in large multinationals. As such, it is part of ongoing longitudinal leadership research, following a hermeneutic approach.

Findings

From a qualitative as well as quantitative perspective the paper reviews the implementation and usage of corporate leadership instruments and discusses current practices of large corporations trying to select, support, measure, motivate and develop very large numbers of leaders around the world. A conceptual leadership system is presented as a basic frame of reference.

Research limitations/implications

The exploratory research approach has its strength in framing the field of corporate leadership systems. Further in‐depth research is needed on the nature of each the four key fields of the conceptual framework described.

Practical implications

Those who are responsible to design and revise corporate leadership systems will find a valuable frame of reference and selected benchmark data as a basis for the assessment and further development of the corporate leadership landscape.

Originality/value

This paper presents original findings in a highly relevant, but under‐researched field of corporate leadership practice.

Abstract

The FIFA Museum in Zurich is a division of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and has been opened in 2016 with the aspiration to become one of the key attractions, both in Zurich as well as in the association football context. As with many tourist attractions, staying on top of the game is a challenge. Unlike other museums, the FIFA Museum took an open innovation approach in developing their concept, especially for those parts that deal with visitor interactions. With the goal of being not only a football museum, but also an attractive and leading event location in Switzerland, event ideas were collected using a crowdsourcing approach, managed through a platform run by ATIZO. Through this community, the museum could design attractive event concepts, succeeded to increase visitor engagement and built a loyal base of innovators and future guests. This chapter describes the crowdsourcing methodology applied by the FIFA Museum, critically examines the process, advantages, and disadvantages of the methodology chosen, and concludes by giving recommendations for similar cases. The particular focus lies on the application of the crowdsourcing method in areas where a strong fan community can be involved in the development process, such as, e.g., in the association football context.

Abstract

Aims to solve the problem of why newer organizational models are losing their capability to elaborate and develop valuable firm‐specific sources of competitive advantages. Devotes special attention to the interdependent link between the rise of flexible employment relations and the diminishing capability of newer organizational models to sustain the sources of firm‐specific competitive advantages. Argues that an organization which relies heavily on flexible workforces will lose its ability to bind, retain as well as attract its skilled and most important idiosyncratic workers. First describes how the traditional organizational order, known as Fordism, is challenged and what newer organizational models claim to offer. Develops two different conceptional models that depict the hypothesized interdependent relation between the quality and degree of employment relations and the firms’ capability to use and elaborate the idiosyncratic knowledge of its workforce. Shows that the workforce has to be recognized as an increasingly non‐replicable, intangible, difficult to replicate firm‐specific source of sustainable advantage that cannot easily be imitated by competitors if retained and bound within organizational boundaries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of management accounting and control systems (MACS) on environmental innovation practices and operational performance. Specifically, this study relies on Simons’ levers of control (LOC) framework to investigate how managers implement environmental innovation practices. This paper hypothesizes that a forward-looking use of MACS (i.e. interactive use) triggers the implementation of environmental innovation practices, resulting in higher operational performance. Furthermore, the authors argue that the monitoring role of MACS (i.e. diagnostic use) combined with environmental training improves the effect of environmental innovation practices on operational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Hypotheses are examined through a questionnaire survey. The analyses are based on responses in an empirical study from 89 Brazilian hotels.

Findings

Empirical findings from a hierarchical moderated regression analysis support the hypothesized links.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the environmental management and management control literature by providing novel evidence on the roles MACS play in the field of sustainable development. Based on the LOC framework, the authors shed light on the understanding of how managers introduce and monitor environmental innovation practices, as well as also outlining the key effects of environmental training in enabling the novel abilities of managers and employees to better understand environmental data and identify novel potential environmentally friendly solutions in the case of deviations. This paper also adds to Wijethilake et al. (2017), providing new empirical evidence on how firms design, implement and use MACS that capture institutional pressures for sustainability from multiple stakeholders.
