Abstract

Purpose

The authors aim to describe the mutual perspectives of sustainability and service science and characterize them for the design and development of more sustainable services and to promote an overall shift toward sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a novel model for the design of services that fulfill customer demands and that can be continued for long periods of time without having a negative impact on either the natural or the social environment. Sustainability was therefore incorporated into the service supply chain not only as a primary value, but also as a super value that enables the customer to deliver sustainability to the next generation.

Findings

The authors' findings suggest that a sustainable service should both imbue the core‐value of the service with sustainability and recruit the customer as a supplier of sustainability to future generations. Thus, sustainable service should mimic natural processes, in so doing achieving energy efficiency, using future‐oriented and life cycle perspectives, and evolving to smoothly adapt to changes in its environment. Moreover, sustainable service should account for the rational use of natural resources, technologies, and information and knowledge and integrate environmental, social, and economic elements together with the inclusion of services and of manufacturing and agricultural processes.

Originality/value

The authors present a novel approach and a model that conceptualizes sustainability as a service while exploring the benefit of doing so, both for sustainability and for service science.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to describe a novel framework for service design to achieve the overall goal of sustainability and to characterize it while exploring the benefit of doing so for both sustainability and service. This novel framework also proposes new opportunities for sustainability-oriented innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a novel approach to design and implement services that will lead to a reduction in the production of goods and will offer alternatives that will reduce whatever production process is involved in its creation, i.e. clean service – CleanServ.

Findings

The authors’ findings suggest that a CleanServ is a service that is competitive with, if not superior to, its conventional tangible or intangible counterparts and one that reduces the use of natural resources and cuts or eliminates emissions and wastes. CleanServs can be categorized into five different groups based on their fundamental contribution to sustainability: prevention, reduction, replacement, efficiency and offset. While the service sector continuous to grow in size and importance, CleanServs will play a key role in improving the sustainability of our society and in preserving the environment.

Practical implications

The CleanServ concept offers a new framework and novel opportunities for sustainability-oriented innovation in the service sector. Implementing CleanServs will enable services to be imbued with sustainability and will promote the exchange of the production of goods with the delivery of services that will supply the same solution more sustainably.

Social implications

CleanServs are expected to change how we consume both products and services and will, therefore, promote a more rational use of natural resources and will reduce the discharge of pollution to the environment. Implementation of the CleanServ concept will, thus, advance the current state of the art in sustainable development and improve quality of life on a global scale.

Originality/value

This paper presents a novel approach and a framework that conceptualizes clean services, which we term CleanServs, while exploring the benefit of doing so, both for sustainability and for service science.

Abstract

Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have become an increasingly broad-based phenomenon, and their numbers are growing dramatically in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere throughout the globe. Still, research shows us that less than 50% of M&As succeed. At the same time scholarly research on M&As abounds, presenting the opportunity to step back and review what we have learned and what we still do not know. Although the field of M&A research is far too broad and complex to be covered in one review essay, we attempt to begin at the beginning, covering some historical and background issues before surveying three topics fundamental to successful M&As. First, in order to lay the foundations for better understanding of M&A processes in general, we overview various approaches from those that include just two phases – premerger and postmerger – to those with seven phases – including aspects of due diligence and integration phases. The second topic refers to M&A motives such as entering a new market, gaining new scarce resources, achieving synergies, and so forth. The third issue is M&A success factors. Here we synthesize a large body of research that has pointed to many different managerial and organizational factors that are generally associated with M&A success, for example, relative size of M&A partners, managerial involvement, culture, and organizational structural issues. While no review of these topics can claim to be comprehensive, we do attempt to present a good variety of literature approaches representing not only elite scholarly journals but also some important practitioner-oriented books and articles.

This chapter aims to make sense of the growing research that examines the role of culture in mergers and acquisitions. We provide a detailed review of the many related but distinct constructs that have been introduced to the literature. While each construct has contributed to our understanding of the role of culture, the lack of connections made among constructs has limited the consolidation of contributions. The review shows what these constructs mean for mergers and acquisitions, what major findings have been discovered, and, most importantly, how constructs interrelate. Our discussion provides several opportunities to foster the needed consolidation of this research.

Abstract

Management researchers and practitioners point out that integration processes during the post-merger integration period are critical to synergistic effects and performance of the merged companies over time. However, the relation between the post-merger integration process, synergy potential exploitation, and its influence on M&A deal success, especially in the case of international M&A, is not clear. Moreover, the results of empirical studies are inconsistent and even contradictory. This chapter adds to the existing body of knowledge by developing a model, based on the analysis of the acquisition by Teva Pharmaceuticals of the Hungarian Biogal and of the Dutch Pharmachemie. The model addresses the key factors such as the effect of corporate culture differences, and synergy potential between the acquiring and acquired firms on the international M&A performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to explore the perceived role of ethics and social responsibility in achieving the organisational effectiveness among managers in transition economy, the impact of demographic characteristics of managers on it, and the relationship between managers' attitudes towards the role of ethics in business and the firm's performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was been done by a survey method based on a sample of managers from the most successful Croatian firms. In order to establish the attitudes of Croatian managers on social responsibility, the PRESOR scale was used.

Findings

It has been established that among Croatian managers a positive attitude on the importance of ethics and social responsibility for the firm's success prevails. Except for the age, the connection between other individual variables and the perception of the role of ethics and social responsibility in doing business was not established. A positive correlation between the perception of the role of ethics and social responsibility in doing business, profit and work productivity has been discovered.

Practical implications

The research results show, to managers in transition and developed market economies, that business success, ethics and social responsibility are compatible.

Originality/value

The original PRESOR scale has been tested on the sample of managers in transition economy. Except for the marketing managers the sample includes also managers in other functions and on different organisational levels.
