Abstract
Purpose
Student attritions in tertiary educational institutes may play a significant role to achieve core values leading towards strategic mission and financial well-being. Analysis of data generated from student interaction with learning management systems (LMSs) in blended learning (BL) environments may assist with the identification of students at risk of failing, but to what extent this may be possible is unknown. However, existing studies are limited to address the issues at a significant scale.
Design/methodology/approach
This study develops a new approach harnessing applications of machine learning (ML) models on a dataset, that is publicly available, relevant to student attrition to identify potential students at risk. The dataset consists of the data generated by the interaction of students with LMS for their BL environment.
Findings
Identifying students at risk through an innovative approach will promote timely intervention in the learning process, such as for improving student academic progress. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, the accuracy is compared with other representational ML methods.
Originality/value
The best ML algorithm random forest with 85% is selected to support educators in implementing various pedagogical practices to improve students’ learning.

Abstract
L. Gǎvruţa (2012) introduced a special kind of frames, named K-frames, where K is an operator, in Hilbert spaces, which is significant in frame theory and has many applications. In this paper, first of all, we have introduced the notion of approximative K-atomic decomposition in Banach spaces. We gave two characterizations regarding the existence of approximative K-atomic decompositions in Banach spaces. Also some results on the existence of approximative K-atomic decompositions are obtained. We discuss several methods to construct approximative K-atomic decomposition for Banach Spaces. Further, approximative d-frame and approximative d-Bessel sequence are introduced and studied. Two necessary conditions are given under which an approximative d-Bessel sequence and approximative d-frame give rise to a bounded operator with respect to which there is an approximative K-atomic decomposition. Example and counter example are provided to support our concept. Finally, a possible application is given.

Abstract
Purpose
Theorising from the intersection of supply chain and information systems (IS) literature, this study aims to investigate supply chain integration (SCI) as a multidimensional construct in the context of cloud-based technology and explores the effect of cloud-enabled SCI on supply chain performance, which will eventually improve firm sustainability from a resource-based view (RBV). In addition, the moderating effect of top management is explored.
Design/methodology/approach
Using cross-sectional survey data collected from a sample of 105 Australian retail firms, this study used structural equation modelling to test the hypothesised relationship of cloud-enabled SCI with performance in a theoretical model.
Findings
Results show that cloud-based technology has positive effect on SCI, and the cloud-enabled SCI is positively related to supply chain performance which eventually influenced firm sustainability. Further, top management intervention moderates the relationship between supplier and internal integration with supply chain performance. But it is found to have no moderating effect on the relationship between customer integration and supply chain performance.
Practical implications
Recognising the potential benefits of emerging cloud-based technologies reported in this study, retail managers need to understand that higher order SCI requires the support of cloud-based technology to improve supply chain performance and firm sustainability.
Originality/value
This research extends prior research of information and communication technologies-enabled SCI and its effect on supply chain performance which overly remains inconsistent. In addition, IS literature abounds with discussion on cloud computing technology per se, and its adoption in supply chain is overly rhetoric. This study fills this gap by conceptualising the multiple dimensions of SCI enabled by cloud-based technology and the way it affects supply chain and firm sustainable performance. Investigating SCI in context of cloud-based technology is a unique contribution in this study. The moderating effect of top management in this decision also adds to the current body of literature.

Abstract
The preparation of future teachers of young children should incorporate attention to the developmental markers at the heart of developmentally appropriate practice and ground early childhood subject matter learning in disciplinary perspectives, engagement, and thinking essential for later disciplinary learning. With this focus in mind, I described an instructional sequence designed to engage teacher candidates in historical reasoning tasks where they considered the conceptual resources they used to support their own historical reasoning as a point of entry for considering the conceptual resources young children have at their disposal. I presumed that such a comparison would allow candidates to develop the kind of content knowledge for teaching, enabling them to best leverage children’s historical reasoning as a means of deepening children’s historical knowledge and understanding. The analysis indicated that candidates began to construct initial developmental trajectories of children’s historical reasoning and raised pedagogical questions suggesting they began to envision themselves as teachers of historical inquiry.

Purpose
The chapter examines and challenges the assumed necessity of a linkage between remembered series of exchanges, amicable social relations, and prestige found in the work of Marcel Mauss and many subsequent theorists of reciprocity and gift exchange.
Methodology
The chapter uses the nearly 500 year history of the giving and taking of the Koh-i-noor Diamond by rulers of South and Central Asia, commencing with Babur, the first Mughal emperor, and ending with Queen Victoria, which includes some gift giving and much taking by force, to explore what happens when only two of the three elements Mauss assumed central to understanding gift exchange are present.
Findings
Based on a review of the historical material, the chapter demonstrates that though historical narratives or memories of exchanges were central to enhancing the prestige of the parties to the exchange and the diamond itself, that process could and did occur in the absence of any on-going amicable social relations, including in situations in which exchange or transfer of the diamond were coerced and nothing was given in return to the dispossessed former owner of the gem.
Originality/value
By suggesting an alternative configuration of the factors necessary for the association of exchange and prestige, the chapter provides the opportunity to reconsider assumptions common in the literature on gift exchange and further enhance our understanding of this central element of social theory.

Abstract
Purpose
Inconel 718 (IN718) is a high-performance nickel-based superalloy with high oxidation-corrosion-temperature resistance, high strength (tensile, fatigue, creep and rupture), durability, toughness, hardness and dimensional stability, which is difficult to machine with traditional fabrication methods. To overcome these difficulties, wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM), one of the modern manufacturing methods, is used.
Design/methodology/approach
Main performance criteria in WEDM; material removal rate (MRR), cutting speed, surface roughness, cutting width (kerf) and wire wear rate. In this study, the effect of processing parameters on kerf and MRR because of processing IN718 in WEDM was investigated. Machining parameters, voltage, wire feed rate and dielectric fluid pressure were determined. Deionized water was used as a dielectric fluid and 0.3 mm brass wire was used as wire in the experiments. Gray Relational Analysis (GRA), which is one of the multi-criteria decision-making methods, has been applied for the optimization of the machining parameters in the cutting process with the WEDM. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the effect percentages of the cut-off parameters.
Findings
The parameter with the highest effect was determined as tension with a rate of 76.95% for kerf and 91.21% for MRR.
Originality/value
The novel approach uses Taguchi-based GRA optimization as a result of cutting IN718 with WEDM, reducing cost and time consumption.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is twofold: to explore how commercial hospitality has contributed to the development of urban areas in relation to commerce, hospitality, religious and imperial patronage in early modern, Safavid Iran (c. seventeenth century). Second, to combine material culture research methods in an analytical framework for future use.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected during 27 site visits over three years to 14 caravanserai six bazaar complexes. A material culture methodology is proposed, designed and implemented, supplemented by analysis of textual sources.
Findings
The form and function of caravanserai at Zein‐i Edin broadly reflect the form and function of desert caravanserai common in much of the Islamic world. However, the complex within the Qaysariyya Bazaar in Isfahan reflects the convergence of specific dynastic, geopolitical and economic issues facing seventeenth century Safavid Iran shaping both urban form and commercial focus. These are consolidation of the Safavid dynasty, rivalry with the Ottoman Empire and the vital importance of trade with Mughal India.
Research limitations/implications
The research is limited by its specific contextual scope but invites further investigation in analogous contexts across this milieu as well as further implementation of the material culture methods it adopts to both historical and contemporary commercial contexts.
Originality/value
The paper explores, for the first time the development of commercial hospitality in early modern Iran and invites further consideration of the development of capitalism outside of Eurocentric teleologies. Furthermore, it presents a new and explicit methodological framework for using material culture as a means of enquiry.

Abstract
Purpose
Through a critical reading of a twentieth-century Bengali artist’s autobiography, this paper aims to attempt to demonstrate how commercial art and the consumption ethos symbolized by that art represented an archetypal bhadralok insignia. A close examination of this insignia reveals how the dynamics of modern liberal values mediating through the colonial capitalist structure in relation to the regional particularities of Bengal opened up a new space of cosmopolitanism, where there is an attempt to reframe cultural practices in the light of a broader global history of interrogation, reason, change and emancipation.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is a historical analysis of primary sources.
Findings
It was found that the bhadralok-led Bengal School of Art influenced commercial art of early postcolonial Bengal.
Research limitations/implications
The study is limited to the region of Bengal.
Originality/value
This paper makes contributions to one of the less-researched, but very important areas, of business history in India.
