Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research was to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to explore supply chain resilience and operations management practices in the construction industry, with a particular focus on the transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0. The study addressed a significant gap in the literature regarding the impact of these advanced technologies on the construction sector’s ability to anticipate, respond to and recover from disruptions.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology employed a bibliometric analysis using the Scopus database to identify key trends, influential publications and emerging research areas using keywords such as “supply chain”, “operations management”, “Industry 4.0”, “Industry 5.0” and “construction”. This approach allowed for a quantitative evaluation of existing literature, offering insights into the intellectual structure of the field.

Findings

The findings revealed that while Industry 4.0 technologies, such as IoT and AI, have enhanced the construction industry’s supply chain visibility and efficiency, the shift towards the Industry 5.0 paradigm introduces a human-centric approach that further strengthens resilience through collaboration and sustainability.

Practical implications

The study’s practical implications suggest to both industry and academia that embracing Industry 5.0 principles could significantly enhance the construction industry’s resilience, enabling it to withstand disruptions better and maintain project quality, timelines, and budgets in an increasingly complex global environment.

Originality/value

This research examines the shift from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 within construction supply chains, offering a novel perspective on integrating these technologies.

Abstract

Purpose

The construction industry in Nigeria, like many others worldwide, grapples with increasing demands for enhanced efficiency, transparency and security. While distributed ledger technology (DLT) offers substantial potential in tackling these issues, its implementation faces numerous obstacles. This study aims to investigate the challenges hindering the adoption of DLT within the Nigerian construction sector, capitalizing on a recognized research gap in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive literature review identified 20 challenges to DLT adoption. A structured questionnaire was developed and distributed to 98 construction professionals selected from a pool of 5,330 members using purposive and snowball sampling. Background information was assessed using frequency and percentage, data normality with the Shapiro–Wilk test and nonparametric data compared using the Kruskal–Wallis H-test. Factor analysis was then used to reduce the challenges into a more coherent set.

Findings

Findings revealed the top five challenges: power supply issues, data privacy and compliance, an uncertain legal framework, insufficient training and education and a lack of skilled workforce. Further analysis revealed four clusters of challenges, namely, technical and infrastructure barriers, organizational and cultural challenges, financial and economic challenges and regulatory and legal challenges.

Practical implications

Through the evaluation of challenges and potential strategies to overcome them, this study aims to lay a foundation that assists construction entities in effectively harnessing the benefits of DLT while navigating the obstacles inherent in its adoption.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering insights into the challenges surrounding the adoption of DLT, specifically within the Nigerian construction sector. By juxtaposing the findings from this study with existing research conducted in other countries such as India, South Africa and the USA, a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges unique to the Nigerian context can be gained.

Smart cities over the years is fast growing on people. Citizens and stakeholders that were defiant to its adoption are beginning to see the reasons for it. Abstract

This chapter presented cognitive radio networks in construction. The construction industry requires an efficient bandwidth of wireless technology for effectiveness without delay. The persistence of challenges with the investment in third generation is a great concern, and this chapter identified investing in fifth generation (as an alternative) to enlarge bandwidth for better effectiveness that is capable of dealing with unavailable or scarcity of radio spectrum. The application of fifth generation will permit efficient utilisation of the radio spectrum by the primary and secondary users to detect the spectrum parameters which will highlight the direct and adequate interaction with the radio channel. This chapter further considered the usage of this technology as it relates to permitting sharing of sense in the spectrum.
