Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are periodically collecting data through randomly dispersed sensors (motes), which typically consume high energy in radio communication that mainly leans on data transmission within the network. Furthermore, dissemination mode in WSN usually produces noisy values, incorrect measurements or missing information that affect the behaviour of WSN. In this article, a Distributed Data Predictive Model (DDPM) was proposed to extend the network lifetime by decreasing the consumption in the energy of sensor nodes. It was built upon a distributive clustering model for predicting dissemination-faults in WSN. The proposed model was developed using Recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive filter integrated with a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter, for removing unwanted reflections and noise accompanying of the transferred signals among the sensors, aiming to minimize the size of transferred data for providing energy efficient. The experimental results demonstrated that DDPM reduced the rate of data transmission to ∼20%. Also, it decreased the energy consumption to 95% throughout the dataset sample and upgraded the performance of the sensory network by about 19.5%. Thus, it prolonged the lifetime of the network.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to implement lean six sigma (LSS) methodology to improve the admission process in a higher education institute (HEI).

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, case study research methodology is adopted and implemented through an LSS define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) framework.

Findings

The preliminary investigation showed that the completion of the whole admission process of a new student takes an average of 88 min, which is equivalent to a sigma level of about 0.71 based on the targeted admission cycle time of 60 min. The implementation of the proposed LSS approach increased the sigma level from 0.71 to 2.57, which indicates a reduction in the mean admission cycle time by around 55%. This substantial improvement is expected not only to provide an efficient admission process but also to enhance the satisfaction of students and employees and increase the reputation of the HEI to a significant level.

Research limitations/implications

In this study, the sample size used in the analysis is considered small. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is investigated using a discrete event simulation with a single-case study, which may limit generalization of the results. However, this study can provide useful guidance for further research for the generalization of the results to wider scopes in terms of different sectors of HEIs and geographical locations.

Practical implications

This study uses several statistical process control tools and techniques through a LSS DMAIC framework to identify and element the root causes of the long admission cycle time at a HEI. The approach followed, and the lessons learned, as documented in the study, can be of a great benefit in improving different sectors of HEIs.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few attempts to implement LSS in HEIs to improve the administrative process so that better-quality services can be provided to customers, such as students and guardians. The project is implemented by a group of undergraduate students as a part of their senior design project, which paves the way for involving students in future LSS projects in HEIs. This study is expected to help to improve understanding of how LSS methodology can be implemented in solving quality-related problems in HEIs and to offer valuable insights for both academics and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine whether firms meeting or just beating an earnings benchmark engage in tone management in earnings conference calls to complement earnings management in the UK context. It also investigates whether the audience tone in beating or just meeting earnings fails to predict future performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was performed using a sample of non-financial UK firms listed in the FTSE 350 index over the period 2010–2015.

Findings

The findings show that firms that exercise more earnings management to meet or just beat earnings are positively associated with the abnormal tone during earnings conference calls. The outcomes also reveal that the audience’s tone of firms meeting or just beating an earnings benchmark fails to predict future performance. This confirms the effectiveness of the tone management in managing the perception of audience.

Practical implications

This study highlights the need for increased accountability by firms on earnings conference call. It also supports academics and practitioners in understanding the management discretion used in reporting and communication during the earnings conference call. Overall, the results of this study are beneficial for regulators, policymakers and professionals, regarding confirming the need for the earnings conference calls to be regulated.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that examines the association between earnings management and tone management in the UK earnings conference calls. It adds to the existing literature by examining the self-serving behaviour of managerial tone during earnings conference calls within a sitting in which meeting or just beating a benchmark is used. Unlike several studies that explain the behaviour of tone as a signalling strategy, this study reveals that the tendency of impression management behaviour can explain the tone management.

Abstract

Purpose

The main objective of this paper is to study the optimal system for series systems with mixed standby (including cold standby, warm standby and hot standby) components.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper deals with the reliability and availability characteristics of four different series system configurations. The failure time of the operative, hot standby and warm standby are assumed to be exponentially distributed with parameters λ, λ, and α respectively. The repair time distribution of each server is also exponentially distributed with parameter μ.

Findings

The mean time to failure, MTTFi, and the steady‐state availability Ai(∞) for four configurations are examined and comparisons made. For all four configurations, the configurations are ranked based on: MTTFi, Ai(∞), and Ci/Bi where Bi is either MTTFi or Ai(∞). Obviously, the system with height MTTFi and Ai(∞), do not need frequent maintenance, i.e. less maintenance.

Originality/value

Numerical results for the cost/benefit measure have been obtained for all configurations. It is interesting to note first that the optimal configuration using the cost/MTTFi measure is configuration 4. Next the optimal configuration using the cost/Ai(∞) measure is configuration 2.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to show the effectiveness of methyl red (MR) alone and in combination with KI as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 0.5 M H2SO4.

Design/methodology/approach

Corrosion rates charge transfer resistance values were determined using gravimetric and electrochemical techniques. The efficiency of inhibition was calculated by comparing corrosion rates and charge transfer resistance values in absence and presence of the inhibitor, while the mechanism of inhibition was proposed by considering temperature influence on corrosion and inhibition processes.

Findings

The inhibition efficiency of MR increased with concentration and synergistically increased in the presence of the KI. Polarisation curves reveal that MR is a mixed type inhibitor. Changes in impedance parameters were indicative of adsorption of MR on the metal surface. The trend of inhibition efficiency with temperature suggests that inhibitor molecules are physically adsorbed on the corroding metal surface in the absence of KI and chemically adsorbed in its presence. MR was found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm both with and without KI.

Originality/value

Electrochemical techniques have been used for the first time to study synergistic effect of MR dye and potassium iodide on inhibition of corrosion of carbon steel in H2SO4.The results suggest that the mixture (MR + KI) could find practical application in corrosion control in aqueous acidic environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Soya milk possesses dietetic properties, which include lower contents of saturated fat, cholesterol and lactose, and can reduce the risk of cardio vascular diseases. Partial substitution of milk solids with soya solids during the preparation of yoghurt further enhances its dietetic features.

Design/methodology/approach

Attempt has been made to highlight the nutritional and therapeutic properties of soya milk and its suitability for the manufacture of soyoghurt with enhanced dietetic properties. Basic steps for the manufacture of soyoghurt, such as preparation of soya milk base, addition of stabilizers, sweetening agents, starter cultures and flavors and storage stability of the finished products are described.

Findings

Soya solids in various forms such as soya milk, soya bean paste, soya protein concentrate and soya bean flour may be adopted during the manufacture of soyoghurt, but their concentration must be kept within the limits to sustaining the acceptability of the product. Problem of objectionable bean flavour and slower metabolic activity of starter cultures in soya milk can be solved with starter manipulation and introduction of sweetening agents and flavours.

Originality/value

Possession of nutritional and therapeutic qualities by soya beans have led to their exploitation for the manufacture of soyoghurt. Consumption of soyoghurt among health conscious people and allergic sufferers in search of meat replacer and dairy alternatives should be encouraged.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore, through a numerical study, buoyant convective phenomena in a porous cavity containing a hybrid nanofluid, taking into account the local thermal nonequilibrium (LTNE) approach. The cavity contains a solid block in the shape of a cross (+). It will be helpful to develop and optimize the thermal systems with intricate geometries under LTNE conditions for a variety of applications.

Design/methodology/approach

To attain the objective, the system governing partial differential equations (PDEs), expressed as functions of the current function and temperature, and are solved numerically by the finite difference approach. The authors carefully examine the heat transfer rates and dynamics of the micropolar hybrid nanofluid by presenting fluid flow contours, isotherms of the liquid and solid phases, as well as contours of streamlines, isotherms and concentration of the fluid. Key parameters analyzed include heated length (B = 0.1–0.5), porosity (ε = 0.1–0.9), heat absorption/generation (Q = 0–8), length wave (λ = 1–3) and the interphase heat transfer coefficient (H* = 0.05–10). The equations specific to the flow of a micropolar fluid are converted into classical Navier–Stokes equations by increasing the porosity and pore size.

Findings

The results showed that the shape, strength and position of the fluid circulation are dictated by the size of the inner obstacle (B) as well as the effective length of the heating wall. The lower value of obstruction size, as well as heating wall length, leads to a higher rate of heat transfer. Heat transfer is much higher for the higher amount of heat absorption instead of heat generation (Q). The higher porosity values lead to lesser fluid resistance, which leads to a superior heat transfer from the hot source to the cold walls. The surface waviness of 4 leads to superior heat transfer related to any other waviness.

Research limitations/implications

This work can be further investigated by looking at thermal performance in the existence of various-shaped obstructions, curvature effects, orientations, boundary conditions and other variables. Numerical simulations or experimental studies in different multiphysical contexts can be used to achieve this.

Practical implications

Many technical fields, including heat exchanging unit, crystallization processes, microelectronic units, energy storage processes, mixing devices, food processing, air conditioning systems and many more, can benefit from the geometric configurations investigated in this study.

Originality/value

This work numerically explores the behavior of micropolar nanofluids (a mixture of copper, aluminum oxide and water) within a porous inclined enclosure with corrugated walls, containing a solid insert in the shape of a cross in the center, under the oriented magnetic field, by applying the nonlocal thermal equilibrium model. It analyzes in detail the heat transfer rates and dynamics of the micropolar nanoliquid by presenting the flow patterns, the temperature of liquid and solid phases, as well as the variations in the flow, thermal and concentration fields of the fluid.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the state of preservation of one of the most famous manuscripts dated back to the 15th century using some analytical techniques to identify the manuscript components, explain its deterioration mechanisms and produce some solutions for conservation processes in future studies.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical techniques used were visual assessment, digital microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDX, pH measurement, attenuated total reflection – Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FTIR) and cellulose crystallinity.

Findings

Stains, missed parts and scratching were the most common aspects of deterioration. Some insects were observed by digital microscope. The SEM showed that linen fibers and goat skin were used to manufacture paper sheets and leather binding. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis proved that niobium and tantalum were added during the manufacture of paper sheets. Carbon black ink was the main writing material. The other pigments used were cinnabar in red ink, gold color from brass and blue color from lapis lazuli. FTIR analysis proved that some chemical changes were noticed. Low crystallinity of the historical paper was obtained. There was a reduction in the pH value of the historical bookbinding.

Originality/value

The importance of the analytical techniques used to detect the main components, forms and mechanism of deterioration of the studied manuscript. The elements of niobium and tantalum were added to paper sheets, which protected them from deterioration. The insects such as house flies and Sitophilus granarius were found in the manuscripts.

Abstract

Purpose

Human health is strongly affected by diet. By the increased use of food industries products, public knowledge about health factors and side effects of chemical additives, the concepts of human health founded an important aspect during past years, and application of natural-based ingredients such as coloring, flavoring, texturizing and anti-oxidative agents was increased.

Design/methodology/approach

The aim of the present paper is to review the published scientific research studies about lycopene health benefits in different human disease or disorders and bold the necessity of study the health effects of lycopene after its formulation in food industrial products. About 190 papers were searched in Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science databases and 72 relevant papers were used. It was found that in medical studies, the lycopene oleoresin or powder is used directly to the subjects. However, it is necessary to study the effectiveness of lycopene in diet food products.

Findings

According to the literature, it has beneficial effects on cancers, glands, reproductive system, bone, gastric system, liver and fat reduction in the body. Also, it was concluded from the literature that lycopene oxidative cleavages make also its chemo protective effects which is a lost key element to study different food processing on lycopene products or its isomers in final food products and on human health.

Originality/value

Many ingredients in food formulations are substituted by natural products. Lycopene is a colorant but also, according to the literature, has a strong antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effect to reduce the risk of most important human disease and disorders. Future research in food science can emphasize the effect of different unit operations or formulations on lycopene effects on human health.

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to showcase the significant achievements of Egypt's scientists in the 20th century across various fields of study such as medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, math, geology, astronomy and engineering. The paper highlights the struggles and successes of these scientists, as well as the cultural, social and political factors that influenced their lives and work. The aim is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and make their own contributions to society by presenting these scientists as role models for hard work and dedication. Ultimately, the paper seeks to promote the importance of science and its impact on society.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this review is to present the scientific biographies of Egypt's most distinguished scientists, primarily in the field of Natural Sciences, in a balanced and comprehensive manner. The work is objective, honest and abstract, avoiding any bias or exaggeration. The author provides a clear and concise methodology, including a brief introduction to the scientist and their field of study, an explanation of their major contributions, the impact of their work on society, any challenges or obstacles faced during their career and their lasting legacy. The aim is to showcase the important achievements of these scientists, their impact on their respective fields and to inspire future generations to pursue scientific careers.

Findings
