Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the role of social factors that determine the length of stay in a mental hospital and also understand the main factors leading to the phenomena as a step to solve it.
Design/methodology/approach
A case-control cross-sectional observational study is performed which studies correlates for the lengthy stay in a mental hospital. The study population consists of two groups: Group A (94 patients), taken from the patients hospitalized for more than one year, further subdivided into schizophrenia and schizoaffective inpatient group and bipolar affective inpatient group; and Group B (94 patients), receiving their treatment at the outpatient clinic after being admitted for less than six months, this group was further subdivided into same categories as Group A.
Findings
The study showed that the positive score in positive and negative symptoms scale (PANSS) showed highly statistically significant (p<0.01) correlation with the length of hospital stay for the schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients in the inpatient group. The results showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) between the inpatient schizophrenic cases and the inpatient affective cases regarding the length of hospital stay.
Research limitations/implications
The linear regression model was used to understand the predictors of increased length of hospital stay. The linear regression analyzing the scale data of schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients found that the length of hospital stay for the schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients depends on the patient’s age and his positive PANSS score. On the other hand, linear regression model for bipolar affective patients in the study found no statistically significant attributes of the length of hospital stay.
Practical implications
The study found that the length of hospital stay for schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients depends on the patient’s age and his positive PANSS score.
Social implications
The need for this study stems from the large numbers of mental inpatients who have been lengthily admitted in mental health hospitals in Egypt, while trying to understand main factors leading to the phenomena as a step to solve it. The study found that there is a highly significant difference between inpatient group and outpatient group regarding the marital status, education level, and psychosocial class, with inpatient group having more single, illiterate, and very low social class cases.
Originality/value
Research in the area of chronic psychiatric hospitalization and its effect on the course and prognosis of mental illness is still scarce, especially in the Arab world; therefore, the research will open the door for further research efforts in the future with a larger sample of patients to study the pros and cons of deinstitutionalization taking into account the past experience of health systems in other countries.

Abstract
Many factors affect the print quality and ink transfer. These are either machine factors, paper factors, or Ink factors. The aim of this work was to find out to what extent are the amount of ink transferred influenced by the previously mentioned factors. Atomic absorption was used for quantitatively measuring the amount of ink transferred. Copper phthalocyanine pigment was chosen. The amount of copper detected is taken as an indication of the amount of ink transferred. The results indicated that the amount of ink transferred decreased as the printing speed increased. It was expected to be increased with increasing printing pressure. But It was found that the amount of ink transferred to supercalendered paper decreased with increasing printing pressure. The amount of ink transferred increased as the ink viscosity increased. The type of ink resin was found to have a considerable effect on the amount of ink transferred.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to prepare thermal transfer ribbons with good alcohol resistance.
Design/methodology/approach
A variety of alcohol-resistant thermal transfer inks were prepared using different polyester resins. The printing temperature, printing effect, adhesion and alcohol resistance of the inks on the label were studied to determine the feasibility of using the ink for manufacturing thermal transfer ribbons. The ink formulations were prepared by a simple and stable grinding technology, and then use mature coating technology to make the ink into a thermal transfer ribbon.
Findings
The results show that the thermal transfer ink has good scratch resistance, good alcohol resistance and low printing temperature when the three resins coexist. Notably, the performance of the ribbon produced by 500 mesh anilox roller was better than that of other meshes. Specifically, the ink on the matte silver polyethylene terephthalate (PET) label surface was wiped with a cotton cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol under 500 g of pressure. After 50 wiping cycles, the ink remained intact.
Originality/value
The proposed method not only ensures good alcohol resistance but also has lower printing temperature and wider label applicability. Therefore, it can effectively reduce the loss of printhead and reduce production costs, because of the low printing temperature.

Abstract
Purpose
A disperse fluorescent yellow paste was mixed with a dispersant naphthalene sulfonic derivative via wet grinding process to prepare thermal transfer ink with good fluorescence. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
The surface tension, viscosity, pH value, zeta potential, stability and the morphology of ink samples were tested after the storing process.
Findings
The morphology of paste was homogeneous nearly spherical nanoparticles and the particle size was about 100 nm from the transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which was similar to the average particle size obtained from the particle size analyser.
Research limitations/implications
The paste particle size was 126.8 nm after storing at 50°C for one week. The addition of diethylene glycol was conducive to high fluorescent reflectivity and gave good line image quality both in warp and weft directions due to the low viscosity. Inkjet printed polyester fabrics achieved excellent rubbing, laundering and thermal subliming fastnesses.
Originality/value
The polyester fabrics thermal transferred with the ink contained diethylene glycol represented higher fluorescent reflectivity and gave better line image quality both in warp and weft directions. The inkjet printed polyester fabrics showed excellent colour reproducibility and all the fastnesses, including rubbing, laundering and thermal subliming, were higher than Grade 4.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the electrochemical behavior of Sn electrode in Na2B2O7 solutions in the absence and presence of NaNO3 as a pitting corrosion agent.
Design/methodology/approach
The electrochemical behavior of Sn electrode was studied by using cyclic voltammetry and potentiodynamic polarization measurements and complemented with scanning electron microscopy examinations.
Findings
This paper shows that in the absence of NO3 − ions, the anodic polarization of Sn electrode exhibits active/passive transition. Addition of various concentrations of NO3 − anions to the borate solution enhances active anodic dissolution and tends to break down the passive oxide film at a certain pitting potential. The pitting potential, and hence the pitting corrosion resistance, decreases with increasing NO3-ion concentration and temperature but increases with scan rate and repetitive cycling. Addition of CrO42−, WO42− or MoO42− oxyanions to the borate nitrate solution inhibits the pitting corrosion of Sn.
Originality/value
This is the first study that shows the effect of NO3 − ion as a pitting corrosion agent.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influences of coating colours and their contents on the fundamental properties of base papers and also evaluate these results in terms of mechanical and wood-free papers.
Design/methodology/approach
A design research approach has been based on the application of various coating colours and analysis of mechanical and optical tests results of the coated mechanical and wood-free base papers.
Findings
This study is confirmed that the coating colours can be easily applied to the surface of the papers. The experimental data have revealed that significant improvements exist in the values of tear resistance (strength), brightness and opacity of the mechanical base papers, especially by the application of the coating colours including kaolin pigment. The results show that mechanical papers can also be used in areas with high brightness expectations by applying coating colour.
Originality/value
The originality of this work is based on understanding and comparing the effects of applying similar coating formulations on mechanical and wood-free base papers.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a pigment coating on the mechanical properties of fluting paper.
Design/methodology/approach
Two different calcium carbonate pigments were used in the preparation of the coated color, precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and ground calcium carbonate (GCC). Fluting paper produced by recycling waste paper was used as base paper. The effects of PCC and GCC pigments on mechanical properties were compared. Ring crush test (RCT), corrugating medium test (CMT), corrugating crush test (CCT), tensile and burst strength tests were applied to the coated papers, and the results were compared to the mechanical properties of base paper.
Findings
The tensile and burst indices of the coated papers were found to be higher than base papers about 13.9% and 6.05%, respectively. While the coating process positively affected the RCT and CCT values, it did not show a significant impact on the CMT values. GCC, one of the pigments used in coating colors, had a more effective effect on the mechanical properties of fluting papers compared to PCC.
Originality/value
These results suggest that coating of fluting papers has a positive effect on mechanical properties and the use of GCC as a pigment is more effective than PCC.

Abstract
Two‐dimensional finite difference calculations are carried out to study laminar flow in longitudinal and transverse convection rolls for three different geometries: a single rectangular cavity with high aspect ratio; a double cavity with a thin separation sheet; and a double cavity with a separation sheet and a honeycomb structure. The equations for the convection‐diffusion in the fluid and conduction in the solid region are solved simultaneously. Good agreement with experimental data is achieved for Rayleigh numbers not too high above the critical value for the onset of secondary convection rolls (Ra < 8500 for vertical and Ra < 2700 for horizontal cavities filled with air). Simulation fails for inclined cavities, where the flow structure is essentially three‐dimensional.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of pad printing for producing electrical conductors and to define the factors affecting the print quality of polymeric silver ink conductors.
Design/methodology/approach
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film and polyphenylene oxide (PPO) compound film were used as substrate materials. Three different polymeric silver inks, marked A, B and C, were used and tested.
Findings
The results indicated that the important factors in the pad printing of silver ink conductors are the printing parameters and characteristics of the ink, pad, cliché and substrate. The interactions of these factors should be considered on a case-by-case basis. The sheet resistances of triple-pressed ink conductors varied between 20 and 110 mΩ/sq for 5.7- to 8.5-μm-thick conductors. Ink (B) had a higher sheet resistance than Ink (A) because of its lower silver particle content but also because of the shorter curing time and lower curing temperature. Ink (A) showed excellent adhesion on PET, and Ink (B) had moderate adhesion on PET without corona or plasma pre-treatments, but both inks adhered weakly on PPO compound. Both corona and plasma treatments raised adhesion of these two inks on all test substrates to the highest classification value, 5B.
Originality/value
This paper contains a survey and preliminary testing of the pad printing of polymeric silver ink conductors on flexible thermoplastic foils. Finally, the paper introduces the advantages and drawbacks of the technique.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to prepare, characterise and evaluate nano-emulsions of ter-polymers of various compositions as eco-friendly binders for flexographic ink industry.
Design/methodology/approach
Various nano-emulsions of ter-polymers were prepared based on Vinyl acetate, Vinyl Versatate, butyl acrylate, acrylic acid and acrylamide monomers by means of a conventional seeded emulsion polymerisation technique, using K2S2O8 as the initiator. The characterisation of the prepared emulsions was performed using Fourier transform infrared, thermo-gravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography and transmission electron microscopy. A selection of co-polymers and ter-polymers were formulated with pigments and additional ingredients, as water-based flexographic inks. The inks were characterised for their rheological properties, pH, degree of dispersion, water-resistance and colour density.
Findings
It was found that the low viscosity of the prepared polymers may reduce the film thickness of the flexographic inks and may also increase the spreading of the ink on the surface. As a result, stable modified poly acrylate-based latex with improved physico-mechanical properties was obtained. The prepared latexes showed improved properties such as enhanced thermal stability and better water resistance. The effect of the emulsifier type on the properties of the resulting emulsion latexes and their corresponding films were investigated. Also, as the hydrophobic monomer increases, so does the colour density and increasing the binder ratio enhances the gloss values. The improving in gloss values were obtained and provide excellent adhesion properties for both the pigment particles and the base paper.
Research limitations/implications
The study focusses on the preparation of new water-based ter-polymer nano-particles and their use as eco-friendly binders for flexographic ink industry. Ink formulations based on other different type emulsion polymers could also be studied to assess the applicability of the ink formulation system found for other binders.
Practical implications
The ink formulations developed could find use in industrial-scale printing.
Originality/value
Eco-friendly environment and low-cost ink formulations for printing on paper substrates are novel.
