Abstract
The origins of the LEXIS‐NEXIS service lie in the defence industry. Specifically its database engine, originally called ‘Central!’, was developed by the Ohio‐based Data Corporation to help the US Air Force keep track of procurement contracts and equipment inventory. This technology was later to prove attractive to the American Bar Association when it began exploring the potential of computer‐assisted legal research in the 1960s: an interest that led to the decision by the Ohio State Bar Association, in 1967, to award a $7000 contract to the Data Corporation. As a consequence, the Central! search engine become the core of a new full‐text searchable computerised database of the Ohio statutes. Called the Ohio Bar Automated Research — or OBAR — service this was later to grow into today's LEXIS‐NEXIS service.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to review the current LIS literature for document supply and related topics.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on the reading of about 150 journals, reports and web sites.
Findings
This study finds that the prices of the big deals are under greater attack than ever. Alternatives are being actively explored. A more assertive approach is being adopted to expand the role of open access. Resistance is growing, particularly in the UK, to the publishers' ability to override copyright law in their contracts with libraries.
Originality/value
This is the only regular literature review that focuses on document supply.

Abstract
In an article to published in this month's Information World Review, Trevor Fenwick, the Managing Director of Euromonitor, argues that the larger online hosts do not understand the research market or appreciate the value of research reports. As a result they are selling online market reports at unrealistically low prices. This, he says, may force publishers to stop producing the reports.
