Abstract
A visual based group decision‐making process used for office layout finalisation is described. While quantitative and computer based models can be used for planning alternative layout plans, considerations of qualitative and personal factors should be given during the layout finalisation phase. The visual evaluation of detailed architectural drawings of alternative layout plans, by a group of the office employees, can result in generating ideas for modifications. These modifications are incorporated in a new plan, which is sketched by a professional office planner. The process of evaluating a sketch for the office plan, generating‐ideas for modifications, analysing the ideas and re‐sketching the office plan results in an effective office layout. This can increase employee morale and productivity. The visual based group decision‐making process was successfully used for layout finalisation of a large engineering office. A detailed description of this case study is given.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to identify and apply an appropriate methodology for evaluating and ranking potential suppliers.
Design/methodology/approach
Essential characteristics of suppliers that must be considered in the supplier selection process are identified. Risk to the disruption of company operations as it relates to the reliability of suppliers is described as a reliability chain.
Findings
The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is shown to be the appropriate methodology for evaluating and ranking potential suppliers.
Practical implications
The case study demonstrates how the AHP can serve as a valuable methodology for ranking and selecting suppliers.
Originality/value
The case study shows that the AHP can be used to evaluate and rank current and potential suppliers based on multiple criteria of supply reliability.

Abstract
The efficiency and effectiveness of hospital emergency rooms depend on the effectiveness of the information and communication system as well as on the physical facility itself. Describes the role of information technology in the design of contemporary ER systems. A computerized information board is one system that can enhance the operation of an ER facility. Describes the structure of this system, as well as its integration with other computerized systems. Also describes design features that may help to reduce ER delays/frustration. Because many types of professionals are involved in the daily operations of an ER facility, their input to the design is essential. For this reason, also describes a group decision‐making process.

Abstract
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is used to determine the relative efficiency of the top-ranked gynecology departments in the United States as designated by the U.S. News & World Report ranking. DEA is a linear programming base procedure used to determine the relative efficiency of operating units that have similar characteristics. Efficiency scores are calculated by comparing two different input sets to the performance of each gynecological department. Ranking based on DEA more completely and accurately represents gynecological departments. Further, DEA makes it possible to fairly compare specific departments. The new ranking coupled with the efficiency score accrued by each hospital will motivate and guide hospital administrators to improve the performance of hospital gynecology departments by better utilizing expensive resources.

Abstract
A model of an electronic data interchange (EDI) enabled ingredient supply chain for a food processing company was developed, the model was simulated and its performance was compared with a simulation model of the current ingredient supply chain process of a US food processing company. The simulation results indicated that an EDI enabled system, which removed many of the time delays associated with the current process, significantly reduced swings in raw materials inventory and allowed significant reductions in raw materials safety stock without increasing the risk of production delays due to out‐of‐stock ingredients.

Abstract
The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.

Abstract
With the growth of worldwide e‐commerce, companies are increasingly targeting foreign online consumers. However, there is a dearth of evidence as to whether global consumers prefer to browse and buy from standardized global web sites or web sites adapted to their local cultures. This study provides evidence from five different countries as to whether global consumers prefer local web content or standardized web content. The study also measures how the degree of cultural adaptation on the web affects consumer perception of site effectiveness.

Abstract
A nurse home care scheduling system is described. The objective is to provide medical care at patients’ homes using the fewest number of nurses possible to deliver the required care. The heuristic scheduling system is easy to implement as a computerized adaptive system. As such, it is easy to use on a daily basis and easy to update as new data related to completed treatment and new requests are obtained. A case study illustrates the advantages of implementing such a system.
