Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to prepare, analyse and measure the colour values of the lake pigments obtained from the reaction of Al3+, Fe2+ and Sn2+ metal salts with the natural dyes present in European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica L.).

Design/methodology/approach

A reversed‐phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode‐array detection method was utilised for the identification of buckthorn lake pigments. The extraction of dyes from the lake pigments was carried out with 37% hydrochloric acid/methanol/water (2:1:1; v/v/v) solution.

Findings

According to the results of the HPLC analysis of the lake pigments, it was determined that rhamnetin, kaempferol, and emodin were present in the acid hydrolysed plant extract and in the lake pigment that was precipitated by Sn(II), quercetin‐3‐arabinosid, rhamnetin, and emodin were present in the non‐hydrolysed plant extract, and kaempferol, rhamnetin, isorhamnetin, and emodin were found in the lake pigment that was precipitated by Al(III). Rhamnetin and emodin were present in the lake pigment that was precipitated by Fe(II).

Research limitations/implications

In the present context for the preparation of buckthorn lake pigments, a simple and practical method is presented. In addition, the analysis of the lake pigments was performed by reversed phase HPLC (RP‐HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD).

Practical implications

The paper describes the preparation of lake pigments and their qualitative analysis. This method can be used to determine the origins of the dyestuffs used in historical art pieces.

Originality/value

The paper describes the development of methods for the analysis and the preparation of European buckthorn lake pigments.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the antibacterial properties of natural pigments prepared from Thymus serpyllum.

Design/methodology/approach

Al (III), Fe (II), Sn (II) and Cu (II) complexed natural pigments were obtained by using a precipitation method and the main constituents in the pigments were identified with HPLC-DAD. Also FTIR analysis was performed for further structural characterization. Moreover, the thermal stability and thermal degradation properties of the pigments were analyzed by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The antimicrobial activity of the thyme plant-extracted pigments was evaluated by measuring the minimal inhibitory concentration.

Findings

Apigenin and luteolin flavones were detected as the main components of the natural dyes. Thermal degradation behaviour of the pigments was determined by means of TGA. All pigments showed high char yields and it was attributed to the high complexation between the metal and the ligand species. The antimicrobial activity of the thyme plant-extracted pigments was measured and it was found that all pigments had high antimicrobial activity. Aluminum-thymus pigments showed the highest antimicrobial efficiency among other pigments used in this study.

Originality/value

The obtained pigments have high antimicrobial activities, and therefore, they can be used for the production of antimicrobial textiles. Furthermore, Thymus-based natural pigments might have potential applications in coating, paint, plastic industries, etc.

Abstract

Leaders can guide and direct their subordinates and even be a source of inspiration for their subordinates in order to carry out the work in an organization effectively and efficiently. In the light of current approaches, many different definitions of leadership, including paradoxical leadership and digital leadership, have been made. In the literature, no research has been found on the types of leadership for current approaches and the subject of spirituality in the workplace. Moreover, although some individuals have leadership qualities, they may not prefer to be leaders. In this chapter, it will be examined how the subject of spirituality contributes to encouraging individuals to lead and activate the power within them, and what kind of leadership (spiritual, authentic, servant, destructive, etc.) has a relationship with the subject of spirituality in the workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

Today’s organizations try to keep their employees loyalty but employees may still feel unsatisfied and adopt negative attitudes. Cynicism, as a negative attitude of employees toward their organization, leads to unwanted outputs such as lower performance or lower loyalties that can appear in every kind of sector. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of personality traits on organizational cynicism in the education sector.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used the survey method to collect data and survey forms were distributed to teachers from various private schools in Istanbul, Turkey. With the e-mail survey method, the authors received 254 healthy survey forms from teachers. For personality traits, the five-factor model of personality traits that was developed by McCrae and Costa (1987) was preferred and the organizational cynicism model was evaluated with three basic dimensions as based on Brandes’s (1997) model.

Findings

Based on data from 254 teachers of various private schools in Istanbul, interrelationships amongst personality traits and organizational cynicism were tested. On the basis of the partial least-squares method, the authors found that agreeableness had a negative effect on cognitive cynicism and affective cynicism, conscientiousness had a negative effect on cognitive cynicism and affective cynicism, neuroticism had a negative effect on cognitive cynicism and behavior cynicism, and openness to experience had a positive effect on cognitive cynicism and affective cynicism. Thus, it can be said that personality traits of teachers had a significant effect on organizational cynicism as a result of this study.

Research limitations/implications

This study used two main scales: the scale of McCrae and Costa (1987) for personality traits and the scale of Brandes (1997) for organizational cynicism. The authors adapted both the scales for Turkish culture and the education sector that the results can be considered valid for only this study.

Originality/value

This study shows a significant effect of personality traits on cynicism in the education sector and thus can be considered to be useful for future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

While former literature has shown that people have a strong tendency to seek religious support during difficult times, knowledge gaps exist in how the mechanism of religiosity works to support employees’ mental status and performance. Therefore, based on self-categorization theory, this study aims to examine the effects of employees’ intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity on building their mental toughness and mindfulness and the further formation of employees’ political skills.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected from 404 full-time hotel employees working in 34 hotels in Turkey during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in spring 2020. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

Results of this study show that intrinsic religiosity improves employees’ mental toughness, while extrinsic religiosity enhances employee mindfulness. Additionally, both mental toughness and mindfulness help employees to develop political skill.

Research limitations/implications

This study enriches knowledge to workplace religiosity literature and expands the research scope of religion-related research in hospitality and tourism literature. Future studies are recommended to consider religious heterogeneity and longitudinal design.

Practical implications

To foster employee mental well-being, hotel firms should create a religious-friendly workplace and develop religion-friendly policies. Opportunities should be created within hospitality organizations for employees to develop and use their political skills in needed work aspects.

Originality/value

The findings of this study contribute to valuable theoretical and practical implications. To the best of the knowledge, this study is one of the first attempts to study hotel employees’ religiosity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
