Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the current paper is to identify the factors responsible for achieving business sustainability. This paper further attempts to develop a conceptual framework that can help SMEs to achieve viable business growth through improved sustainable performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The study follows a methodical examination of literature published on SMEs during COVID-19. Specifically, the combination of keywords has primarily centred on SMEs, Business Practices, COVID-19 and Pandemic. The 155 research papers identified for the analysis have been classified as per geographical spread, type of papers, central theme, and theoretical foundations, which finally is followed by rigourous thematic analysis.
Findings
This research contributes to the SME literature by providing methodological, conceptual and practical rigour. The framework proposed by the research covers all the relevant areas which can be useful in preparing sustainable business trajectory for SMEs. It outlines the required directives for designing sustainable business practices for SMEs and includes macro and micro determinants. It also opens up future research avenues in different areas identified in the research. Future research can be performed on comparing business practices of SMEs across the emerging and developed economies.
Practical implications
In this study, we propose a framework that enables the design of sustainable business practices and thereby supports SMEs to combat any uncertain events or shocks. SMEs that can work on adopting sustainable business practices may sculpt novel avenues for growth and competitive advantage for their business.
Originality/value
The study is distinctive in nature as it is based on the examination of literature published during a phenomenological event (COVID-19) which depicts the sudden and unaccounted disruptions faced by SMEs and thereby strategies formulated around the significant glitches.

The purpose of this paper is to unravel the complex factors guiding students' decisions during the higher education admission process in the Maharashtra state.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is based on descriptive and exploratory research and to accomplish the above said objectives, researcher use mix method (qualitative and quantitative). The research was conducted in the higher education institutions, colleges, coaching centers and universities providing under graduate and postgraduate courses in the cities of Maharashtra state, like Pune, Mumbai and Nashik where streams like management and engineering, are available.
Findings
Through a comprehensive dissection of these determinants, the research aims to provide nuanced insights that can guide educational institutions and policymakers in tailoring effective strategies. By recognizing the unique needs and aspirations of students across disciplines in Maharashtra, this study aims to contribute to the enhancement of the higher education admission process.
Research limitations/implications
While the study provides valuable insights into student decision-making in Maharashtra, its findings may not be directly applicable to other regions with different socioeconomic, cultural and educational contexts. Therefore, the generalizability of the findings beyond Maharashtra may be limited.
Originality/value
Focusing specifically on Maharashtra adds a regional dimension to the research, considering the unique sociocultural, economic and educational characteristics of the state. This contextual focus allows for insights that are tailored to the local context, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in higher education admissions within Maharashtra.

Purpose
As corporate life is influenced by various things, there is no justifiable reason to believe that the spiritual power (capacity) should not be one of them. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to argue that workers need to develop another core competency, knowledge and skill, that is, spiritual intelligence (SI).
Design/methodology/approach
This paper draws on a literature review to support its conclusions. In this sense, this paper carefully examines relevant popular and academic books, handbooks, articles, papers, thesis and doctoral dissertations related to SI. In addition, this paper depicts a conceptual model of SI that is made up of some research propositions, namely, professional moral courage, altruism, hope state, optimism, cooperative capacity, organizational justice mindset and listening skill.
Findings
Overall, the literature review suggests that without such a capacity, we would be enjoying merely impoverished lives (here referred to as the outcome of a set of harmful aspects such as an existence without spiritual compass, meaning, worthy purposes and desire to face the shadows of our own personality).
Practical implications
This paper proposes that SI is the path to reach and develop our own spirituality. When this ability is triggered, we are potentially able to make some important contributions to the people that live around and rely on us.
Originality/value
This paper argues that SI can be regarded as a human capacity that connects us with the ultimate frontier, that is, the spiritual realm. As such, it is proposed that it can be cultivated over time in a careful and disciplined way by anyone that is really interested in developing his or her spirituality.

Systematic literature review (SLR) papers have gained significant importance during the last years as many reputed journals have asked for literature review submissions from the authors. However, at the same time, authors are experiencing a high number of desk rejections because of a lack of quality and its contribution to the existing body of knowledge. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to offer guidance to researchers who intend to communicate SLR papers in top-rated journals. We attempt to offer a guide to buddy researchers who plan to write SLR papers. This purpose is achieved by clearly stating how the traditional review method is different from SLR, when and how can each type of literature review method be used, writing effective motivation of a review paper and finally how to synthesize the available literature. We have also presented a few suggestions for writing an impactful SLR in the last. Overall, this chapter serves as a guide to various aspirants of SLR paper to understand the prerequisites of an SLR paper and offers deep insights to bring in more clarity before writing an SLR paper, thereby reducing the chances of desk rejection.

Introduction: Big data is that disruptive force that affects businesses, industries, and the economy. In 2021, insurance analytics will include more than simply analysing statistics. According to current trends, new insurance big data analytics (BDA) methods will enable firms to do more with their data. The insurance business has traditionally been conservative, but adopting new technology is no longer only a current trend; it must be competitive. Big data technologies aid in processing a huge amount of data, improve workflow efficiency, and lower operating costs.
Purpose: Some of the most recent developments in big data for insurance and how insurers may use the information to stay ahead of their competitors are discussed in this chapter. This chapter’s prime purpose is to analyse how artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and mobile technology change the outlook and working of the insurance sector.
Methodology: To achieve our research purpose, we analyse case studies and literature that emphasise how BDA revolutionises the insurance market. For this purpose, various articles and studies on BDA in the insurance market will be selected and studied.
Findings: From the analysis, we find that the use of big data in the insurance business is growing. The development of BDA has proven to be a game-changing technology in insurance, with a slew of benefits. The insurance sector is now grappling with the risks and opportunities that modern technology presents. Big data offers opportunities that every company must avail of. We can safely argue that big data has transformed the insurance sector for the better. The BDA’s consequences have enabled insurers to target clients more accurately. This chapter highlights that new tools and technologies of big data in the insurance market are increasing. AI is emerging as a powerful technology that can alter the entire insurance value stream. The transmission of any type of digital proof for underwriting, including the use of digital health data, might be a blockchain use case (electronic health record (EHR)). As digital forensics becomes easier to include in underwriting, it must expect price and product design changes in the future. In the future, the internet of things (IoT) and AI will combine to automate insurance processes, causing our sector to transform dramatically. We highlight that these technologies transformed insurance practices and revolutionalised the insurance market.

Insurers’ improved ability to analyse risks by examining vast amounts of granular data has considerably refined this technique. Compiling and analysing the fine data sets is now transformed into the ‘Big Data’ technique. The introduction of big data analytics (BDA) is transforming the insurance industry and the role data plays in insurance.
Purpose: This chapter will attempt to examine the applications and role of big data in the insurance sector and how big data affects the different insurance segments like health insurance, property and casualty, and travel insurance. This chapter will also describe the disruptive impact of big data on the insurance market.

Purpose
This study seeks insights into the engineering undergraduates’ knowledge of problem-solving process, teamwork characteristics and communication skills.
Design/methodology/approach
The data for the study were collected through consecutive sampling technique from 78 engineering undergraduates at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, Pilani Campus, India on a five-point Likert scale-based questionnaire.
Findings
Exploratory factor analysis results traced three stages of the problem-solving process. However, the results of teamwork characteristics and communication skills validated the literature-based results. An important finding was that all the three skills were correlated. This means that one skill can be used to develop and promote other skills. The paired sample t-test demonstrated that all the three skills were perceived with a difference, which indicates that these skills worked in collaboration without losing their individuality.
Research limitations/implications
This study supports that there is a need to engage learners in an active and collaborative environment to improve the engineering undergraduates’ knowledge of skills.
Originality/value
The conscious effort to make the engineering undergraduates aware would reduce the gap between the graduating engineers skills currently possessed in academia and the required skills at workplace.

Design/methodology/approach
Different nano- and bio-materials allowed for the development of a variety of biosensors – colorimetric, chemiluminescent, electrochemical, whole-cell and aptasensors – are described. The materials used for their development also make it possible to use them in removing heavy metals, which are toxic contaminants, from environmental water samples.
Findings
This review focuses on different technologies, tools and materials for mercury (heavy metals) detection and remediation to environmental samples.
Originality/value
This review gives up-to-date and systemic information on modern nanotechnology methods for heavy metal detection. Different recognition molecules and nanomaterials have been discussed for remediation to water samples. The present review may provide valuable information to researchers regarding novel mercury ions detection sensors and encourage them for further research/development.
