Abstract

The real-time displacement analysis and correction of vibration forces on the rotor of a rotational active magnetic bearing (AMB) system were performed. The real-time system performs four main tasks: fault detection, fault diagnosis, error correction and fault identification. Historical fault data from a fully suspended 250 kW water cooling AMB pump was used in the design process of the fault detection system. A double radial AMB test rack was used to test the effectiveness of the proposed real-time system. The real-time system corrected, identified and minimized the vibration forces to a stable working condition.

Abstract

We present the results obtained from the thermal and efficiency analysis of a single phase induction motor with Peltier devices. A single phase induction motor is completely simulated in SolidWorks® and Matlab® Simulink®. The cooling of the induction motor is done by means of Peltier devices and the corresponding power consumption and stator temperature is recorded. From the SolidWorks® simulation results it can be seen that the temperature of the induction motor under normal operating conditions is cooled from 68°C to 35°C. From the Matlab® Simulink® simulation results show that the efficiency of the induction motor is increased by an average of 3.73% from the normal operating condition to the cooled operating condition with the inclusion of the Peltier devices onto the system.

Abstract

In this paper, condition monitoring of the internal parts of a radial active magnetic bearing (AMB) system is performed by means of Cepstrum analysis, Wigner-Ville Distributions (WVD) and enveloped Equi-Sampled Discrete Fourier transforms (ESDFT). Sensor faults, power amplifier failures and controller faults were induced in both the simulation and physical AMB system. Condition monitoring by means of the abovementioned techniques were then performed on the displacement and current signals of the simulation and physical AMB system. Results were compared and conclusions were made on how effective Cepstrum analysis, WVD and enveloped ESDFT were on the faults induced on the AMB system.

Abstract

In this paper, the authors provide the design, heat flow analysis and pressure analysis of a commercial energy efficient in-line water heating system in South Africa. The designed commercial in-line water heating system captures the energy consumption, flow rate, temperature and pressure during operation and accordingly responds on these values to increase the energy efficiency of the system. The user is constantly aware of the energy consumption and cost during operation and can choose to switch to a more economical setting to conserve energy. A central processor with PID control was used to optimize the energy consumption of the in-line water heating system. An overview on the design and results of the heat flow analysis and pressure analysis are provided.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify criteria according to which e-dictionaries can be evaluated. Information technology can be used to enhance e-dictionaries, but if not done carefully, information tools that completely overwhelm a user with irrelevant information can be developed. Criteria are necessary according to which e-dictionaries can be developed and evaluated to ensure tools that only provide relevant information on demand.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review was conducted to identify trends in lexicography and modern information technology. Previous usability studies were considered to identify key usability issues. The information was synthesised to identify a set of criteria.

Findings

It was found the e-dictionaries should be evaluated according to their content, information architecture, navigation, access (searching and browsing), help, customisation and use of other innovative technologies.

Originality/value

A comprehensive set of criteria has been identified that can be used to evaluate e-dictionaries and to guide lexicographers in the development of e-dictionaries.

This paper explores budgetary practices in a Tanzanian university after decentralization.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores budgetary practices in a Tanzanian university after decentralization.

Methodology

Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, and observation. Moreover, Bourdieu's theory was used in open and axial coding procedures for data analysis.

Findings

The findings show that decentralized budgeting was a disillusionment. Administrators failed to transfer financial authority to resource recipients. Budgetary practices were shaped by the social structure/budget cycle (field), resources possessed by budgetary actors (capital) and the sincerity patterns of actors in budgetary practices (habitus). Most resource recipients had insincerity in budgeting habitus deploying subversive strategy, while the minority had sincerity in budgeting habitus, deploying submissive strategy. On the other hand, administrators had sincerity and insincerity in budgeting habitus, deploying conservative strategy.

Practical implications

In order to enhance effective decentralization, resource recipients should be provided with adequate financial resources and budgeting skills. Furthermore, they should be trusted and recognized. Moreover, in order to shape budgeting strategies and practices towards achieving organizational objectives, managements should identify and work on internal, external and technical budgetary constraints. In addition, they should promote sincerity in budgeting habitus as habitus can be created, altered, and reproduced through knowledge.

Originality/Value

This is the first paper to investigate budgetary practices in a university setting, employing all Bourdieu's six theoretical concepts. It contributes to Bourdieu's theory by introducing a submissive strategy. In addition, it introduces “episteme” concept as the opposite of “doxa.” Moreover, the paper responds to the call by Deering and Sá (2018) to investigate what guides budgetary practices in a university setting. The paper has also demonstrated the role of approval organs and subordinates which were neglected in prior studies. It proposes a theory of budgetary practice in a University setting when budgeting is decentralized. It thus responds to the call to investigate and theorize the role of actors in calculative practices (such as budgeting) in a University setting (Argento et al., 2020; Aleksandrov, 2020; Grossi et al., 2020; Ozdil and Hoque, 2017).

Abstract

Purpose

Needs for information literacy, disparities in society, bridging digital divides, richness of information sources in electronic (e-)environments and the value of dictionaries have often been propagated. To improve information sources and information literacy training, information behaviour must be understood (i.e. all information activities). This paper conceptualises new opportunities for information sources (e.g. electronic dictionaries) to all society sectors, dictionary literacy and research lenses such as lexicography to supplement information literacy and behaviour research.

Design/methodology/approach

A scoping review of information literacy and behaviour, lexicography and dictionary literature grounds the conceptualisation of dictionary literacy, its alignment with information literacy, information activities and information behaviour and lexicography as additional research lens.

Findings

Research lenses must acknowledge dictionary use in e-environments, information activities and skills, meanings of information and dictionary literacy, the value of e-dictionaries, alignment with information behaviour research that guides the development of information sources and interdisciplinary research from, e.g. lexicography – thus contextualisation.

Research limitations/implications

Research implications – information behaviour and information literacy research can be enriched by lexicography as research lens. Further conceptualisation could align information behaviour, information literacy and dictionary literacy.

Practical implications

Dictionary training, aligned with information literacy training, can be informed by this paper.

Social implications

The value of dictionary literacy for all sectors of societies can be improved.

Originality/value

Large bodies of literature on information behaviour and lexicography individually do not cover combined insights from both.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to modernize the generator system of wind turbine concept that not only improves the efficiency and power density but also reduces the system cost making design simpler and less expensive, especially in large-scale production.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a new permanent magnet transverse flux generator (PMTFG) for wind energy production. The key feature of its composition is the double armature coil in a semi-closed stator core. The main structural difference of the presented design is the use of double coil in the same space of semi-closed stator core and reduced number of stator pole pairs and rotor magnets from 12/24 to 10/20. 3D simulations are performed using finite element analysis (FEA) to measure induced voltage and magnetic field distribution at no load. The FEA is performed to quantify the change in flux linkage, induced voltage and output power as a function of different speeds and load current.

Findings

Results show that PMTFG with double coil configuration has improved electromagnetic performance in terms of flux linkage, induced voltage, output power and efficiency. The power density of 10/20 PMTFG with the double coil is 0.0524 KW/Kg, about an 18% increase compared to the conventional design.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed PMTFG is highly recommended for direct drive applications such as wind power.

Originality/value

Four models are simulated by FEA with single and double coil configuration, and load analysis is performed on all simulated models. Finally, results are compared with conventional PMTFG.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to discuss a theoretical framework for increased integration of a company's communication policy, corporate language policy and corporate information portal with a view to facilitating communication management.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws on selected theoretical contributions on corporate language policy with special emphasis on theoretical considerations on the type of language policies developed and implemented in companies and organisations and on corporate communication with special emphasis on van Riel's common starting points. The empirical basis of the paper is a triangulation of questionnaire data, content analysis data and interview data.

Findings

The paper argues that corporate communication has not sufficiently included the operational part of a company's corporate communication. The paper makes the case for a theoretical integration framework based on van Riel's common starting points (CSPs), and argues that corporate communication also needs to include the corporate language policy and the corporate information portal, defined as a modern information directory offering communicators concrete communication data for use in concrete text production situations.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a CSP‐based theoretical integration framework and makes the case for a Holy Trinity in corporate communications based on the communication policy, the corporate language policy and the corporate information portal.

Abstract

The pressures currently facing US health care organisations, especially hospitals, in a risk environment are analysed. An important route to maximising efficiency is identified as improved collaboration amongst personnel. Team‐building interventions are recommended and the elements essential to effective team building are listed together with the benefits that can accrue from such exercises.
