Abstract
Purpose
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the mechanism of disease (MD) constitutes an essential element of syndrome differentiation and treatment, elucidating the mechanisms underlying the occurrence, progression, alterations and outcomes of diseases. However, there is a dearth of research in the field of intelligent diagnosis concerning the analysis of MD.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, we propose a supervised Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model, termed MD-LDA, which elucidates the process of MDs identification. We leverage the label information inherent in the data as prior knowledge and incorporate it into the model’s training. Additionally, we devise two parallel parameter estimation algorithms for efficient training. Furthermore, we introduce a benchmark MD identification dataset, named TMD, for training MD-LDA. Finally, we validate the performance of MD-LDA through comprehensive experiments.
Findings
The results show that MD-LDA is effective and efficient. Moreover, MD-LDA outperforms the state-of-the-art topic models on perplexity, Kullback–Leibler (KL) and classification performance.
Originality/value
The proposed MD-LDA can be applied for the MD discovery and analysis of TCM clinical diagnosis, so as to improve the interpretability and reliability of intelligent diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the film-forming capacity of logarithmic crowned roller for tapered roller bearing (TRB) and to design a tapered roller profile based on an elastohydrodynamic lubrication model.
Design/methodology/approach
A coupled model, incorporating a quasi-static model of TRBs and an elastohydrodynamic lubrication model was developed to investigate the load distribution of TRB and to evaluate the lubrication state of tapered roller/raceway contact.
Findings
The model is verified with published literature results. Parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of crown drop on azimuthal load distribution of the roller, film thickness and pressure distribution in the contact area. The result shows that crown drop has little influence on the azimuthal load distribution; also, the film thickness and the pressure distribution are asymmetric. When the tapered roller is designed and manufactured, the crown drop of the small end should be larger than that in the large end.
Originality/value
Precise roller profile design is conducive to improve the fatigue life of TRBs. Currently, most crown design methods neglect the influence of lubrication, which can lead to a non-suitable roller profile. Therefore, the present work is undertaken to optimize roller profiles based on lubrication theory.

Abstract
Purpose
Although the prior literature has identified the relevance of dealer participation for multinational enterprises (MNEs), it is unclear whether such participation could also be an important means for local dealers to learn from MNEs. By adopting local firms’ viewpoint, our study draws on organizational learning theory to examine how local dealers benefit from their participation with foreign suppliers in Africa.
Design/methodology/approach
The empirical setting is a combinative dataset of secondary data and primary survey of 164 small- and medium-sized local dealers with nine subsidiaries of a Chinese motorcycle company in six countries of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Findings
This research shows that dealer participation is positively associated with dealer performance, and this positive effect is stronger when local dealers operate in regions with low government corruption and high government support. However, the positive relationship is weaker when local dealers use the local tongue extensively but becomes stronger when their foreign suppliers have a high dealer coverage.
Originality/value
By taking a local-participant perspective, our study extends the participation literature to show how firms from a resource-constrained region may benefit from their proactive participation with foreign counterparts. Additionally, we identify the boundary conditions of institutional factors and strategic choices of local dealers and foreign suppliers, providing a nuanced understanding of firm behaviors in complex and uncertain markets.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to achieve translational shaking tests on a 6-DOF hydraulic parallel manipulator. Shaking tests are commonly performed on shaking tables, which are generally used for small motion ranges and are usually financially costly. The research is required to generate shaking motions in three translational directions for a specimen for shaking tests, but it also needs to produce 6-degree of freedom (DOF) motions with large motion ranges.
Design/methodology/approach
A hydraulic 6-DOF (degree of freedom) parallel manipulator is applied to achieve this goal. The link-space control is adopted for the manipulator, and PID controller and feed-forward controller are used for each loop of the system. A hybrid reference signal generator is proposed by using a shaking controller, which is developed to convert the shaking motion into position signal. The converted result is directly added to the pose signal. The whole real-time control system is realized by using MATLAB xPC Target.
Findings
The developed method is verified on the hydraulic 6-DOF parallel manipulator with specimen. Experiments show very promising results that the proposed technology is really applicable to perform translational shaking tests on the hydraulic parallel manipulator.
Originality/value
A simple yet efficient solution is proposed that allows shaking tests in three translational directions performed on the hydraulic 6-DOF parallel manipulator with wide motion ranges. The paper presents a state-of-the-art related to the applications of parallel robots in several fields of technology.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study largely recent aspects of entrepreneurship and innovation in China. It synthesizes the research in the current special issue (SI) of Multinational Business Review (MBR) on this topic. In addition, this paper differs from other work on this topic in examining entrepreneurship and innovation from a more global standpoint with relevant international effects.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper provides an overview of the literature on entrepreneurship, innovation and key related topics such as firm and economic growth, as well as linking this research to related international works. It also summarizes the papers of the SI.
Findings
The authors’ analysis suggests that the study of entrepreneurship and innovation should be placed in the context of a country’s economic development and institutional environment as well as the firm internationalization trajectories and business models. In addition, the authors believe that a good understanding of economic growth in a transition economy like China (which is a key goal of China’s recent emphasis on innovation) is facilitated by understanding the comparative advantages and disadvantages of an economy with respect to the global innovation system.
Originality/value
The authors’ study explores the local-global and parent-subsidiary connectivity and co-evolution of firm strategies and the institutional environment in entrepreneurship and innovation in emerging and transition economies. The authors summarize and synthesize the papers in this SI to provide the results as well as some directions for future research in the domain of entrepreneurship, innovation and new venture creation, which is believed to be a key engine of economic growth in the coming years.

Abstract
Purpose
Previously, the effect of pore-forming agents on the properties of pore size and morphology was studied. In this paper, we determine the optimal combination of parameters by tensile strength and perform tribological tests with optimal combination of parameters.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, porous polyimide (PI) materials were fabricated using vacuum hot molding technology. The orthogonal experiment was designed to test the mechanical properties of porous PI materials with the process parameters and the content of pore-forming agent as the changing factors. The porous PI oil-bearing materials were obtained by vacuum immersion, and tribological test were carried out.
Findings
The results showed that porous PI oil-bearing materials are suitable for low-speed and low-load conditions. The actual value of the friction coefficient basically match with the theoretical value of the regression analysis, and the errors of the friction coefficient are within 10% and 3%, respectively, which proves that the method used in the study is feasible for the friction coefficient prediction.
Originality/value
In this paper, we have produced a new porous oil-bearing material with good tribological properties. This study can effectively predict the friction coefficient of PI porous material.
