Abstract

Purpose

Oral health is an integral part of the general health, however, oral health has been given lower priority than other health problems especially among the underprivileged refugee population. Out of total refugees in the world, 70 percent of the refugees belong to Tibet. The purpose of this paper is to assess the dental caries status and treatment needs of Tibetans residing in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India and to explore and suggest better oral health care delivery to them.

Design/methodology/approach

Tibetans above the age of 12 years were included in this cross-sectional study. American Dental Association Type-3 examination was conducted. Data regarding demography and oral health practices was recorded on a structured format. For recording dental caries, dentition status and treatment need index was used. The data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical software. χ2 test, student t-test, and ANOVA test were used.

Findings

A total of 18,831 teeth were examined among which 82 percent were sound, 16.7 percent decayed, 0.7 percent were filled without decay, 0.1 percent filled with decay, 0.03 percent were bridge abutments and 0.15 percent teeth had traumatic injury. The mean DMFT was 7.3 and it was increasing with the age. Mean number of teeth requiring one surface filling, two or more surface filling, pulp therapy, and extraction was 1.27, 0.39, 0.21, and 2.08, respectively.

Originality/value

The study revealed low prevalence of dental caries among Tibetans and dental treatment requirement steadily increased with the advancement of age and was also related to other factors like poverty, education, and their tough life where oral health is given no priority.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the readers with the insights regarding the interventions of microalgal technology for production of metabolites and functional ingredients from microalgae for food and nutraceutical application and exploration of microalgae biomass for food application.

Design/methodology/approach

Various information databases such as journals, library catalogues and professional websites were used to collect information pertaining to application of microalgae in food and nutraceutical sector. Systematic review was made with recent studies covering the vital aspects of art of microalgae cultivation for metabolite production, functional ingredients from microalgae, market scenario and utilisation of microalgae biomass for the valorisation of the food products. Key points have been discussed after every section to highlight the practical implications to make this review more insightful for the readers.

Findings

Microalgal technology provides sustainable solution for its application in food and nutraceutical sector. The heart of metabolite production lies in the optimisation of cultivation conditions of microalgae. Wide array of functional components are obtained from microalgae. Microalgae offer an alternative source for omega-3 fatty acids. Microalgae is widely exploited for production of pigments, namely, ß-carotene, astaxanthin, lutein, phycocyanin and chlorophyll, that have important implication as natural colourants and nutraceuticals in food. Larger diversity of sterols found in microalgae confers bioactivity. Microalgae is finding its place in market shelves as nutraceuticals where its functional ingredients are in the form of powder, tablets, extract and beverages and in innovative products such as microalgae protein and fat, culinary algae oil and butter. Sprulina and Chlorella are popular choice for the supplementation of food products with microalgae biomass.

Originality/value

This is a comprehensive review that highlights the application of microalgal technology for the development of healthy food products and presents holistic intervention in food and nutraceutical sector.

Abstract

In this chapter, an attempt has been made to develop a security-based hardware system using an 8-bit single-chip microcontroller in conjunction with some sensor technology and lighting and alarming actuators. The proposed system aims to ensure the security and privacy of a dedicated area in terms of unauthorized human intrusion, hazardous gas leakage, extreme prolonged temperature changes, atypical smoke or vapor content in space and abrupt drop in illumination. The proposed system is capable of detecting any type of physical intervention and hazardous anomalies in the environment of the reserved space. In order to define the operation of the system, programs written in C++ with the special rule of code structuring have been deployed on the microcontroller using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment. The system is like a small container, enclosing all the respective sensor modules, microcontroller board and open connections for actuators. The proposed system is easy to use hardware and does not demand any human intervention for its functioning and can be installed with almost no changes in the infrastructure.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a workflow for design and fabrication of customized surgical guides (CSGs) for placement of the bidirectional extraoral distraction instruments (EDIs) in bilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) surgery to treat the bilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis with zero mouth opening.

Design/methodology/approach

The comprehensive workflow consists of six steps: medical imaging; virtual surgical planning (VSP); computer aided design; rapid prototyping (RP); functional testing of CSGs and mock surgery; and clinical application. Fused deposition modeling, an RP process was used to fabricate CSGs in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene material. Finally, mandibular reconstruction with MDO was performed successfully using RP-assisted CSGs.

Findings

Design and development of CSGs prior to the actual MDO surgery improves accuracy, reduces operation time and decreases patient morbidity, hence improving the quality of surgery. Manufacturing of CSG is easy using RP to transfer VSP into the actual surgery.

Originality/value

This study describes an RP-assisted CSGs fabrication for exact finding of both; osteotomy site and drilling location to fix EDI’s pins accurately in the mandible; for accurate osteotomy and placement of the bidirectional EDIs in MDO surgery to achieve accurate distraction.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a great deal of interest in researching plant-based phytopharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals as a possible alternative to synthetic medication, both to avoid their side effects and for financial reasons.

Design/methodology/approach

Mankind has used medicinal plants since the beginning of civilization. Nature has been explored as a source of therapeutic chemicals for thousands of years, and many modern drugs have been discovered from natural sources. The primary medical care system of resource-poor areas in India has continued to rely on traditional medicine as the most accessible and reasonably priced form of treatment.

Findings

Tinospora cordifolia is a plant that is frequently used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine throughout India. Although almost all of its parts are used in conventional medical systems, the leaves, stems and roots are the most significant ones used medicinally. All forms of existence can benefit from the versatility of T. cordifolia. It includes a wide variety of compounds that impact the body.

Originality/value

The goal of this review is to provide a concise summary of the knowledge about the pharmacological, phytochemistry, botanical, ethnopharmacology, toxicity study, marketed products and patents of the T. cordifolia plant.
