Abstract

Purpose

Distribution network design involves a set of strategic decisions in supply chains because of their long-term impacts on the total logistics cost and environment. To incorporate a trade-off between financial and environmental aspects of these decisions, this paper aims to determine an optimal location, among candidate locations, of a new logistics center, its capacity, as well as optimal network flows for an existing distribution network, while concurrently minimizing the total logistics cost and gas emission. In addition, uncertainty in transportation and warehousing costs are considered.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem is formulated as a fuzzy multiobjective mathematical model. The effectiveness of this model is demonstrated using an industrial case study. The problem instance is a four-echelon distribution network with 22 products and a planning horizon of 20 periods. The model is solved by using the min–max and augmented ε-constraint methods with CPLEX as the solver. In addition to illustrating model’s applicability, the effect of choosing a new warehouse in the model is investigated through a scenario analysis.

Findings

For the applicability of the model, the results indicate that the augmented ε-constraint approach provides a set of Pareto solutions, which represents the ideal trade-off between the total logistics cost and gas emission. Through a case study problem instance, the augmented ε-constraint approach is recommended for similar network design problems. From a scenario analysis, when the operational cost of the new warehouse is within a specific fraction of the warehousing cost of third-party warehouses, the solution with the new warehouse outperforms that without the new warehouse with respective to financial and environmental objectives.

Originality/value

The proposed model is an effective decision support tool for management, who would like to assess the impact of network planning decisions on the performance of their supply chains with respect to both financial and environmental aspects under uncertainty.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to develop new techniques for component physical modeling for the dynamic simulation of integrated power systems.

Design/methodology/approach

A FE‐based phase variable model is proposed so as to achieve fast and accurate simulation. Such a model is established based on the nonlinear transient FE analysis, in order to take into consideration the harmonic effects due to the nonlinear magnetization property, magnetic circuit geometry as well as other design variations.

Findings

In the FE‐based phase variable model, the inductances are described as functions of the phase angle and the magnitude of winding currents, the rotor position and other operational parameters. They are obtained from the transient FE solutions, stored in tables, and retrieved during the simulation. The FE‐based phase variable model is implemented in Simulink in two ways. The first is the equation‐based block and the second is the circuit component‐based block. The FE‐based phase variable models of various electrical components in the power system were studied. This includes various types of rotating machines and transformers. Examination and application examples show the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed operational modeling procedures.

Originality/value

The developed FE‐based physical phase variable model is as accurate as the full FE model with much faster simulation speed. It will benefit the dynamic simulation of integrated power system. This combination of physical modeling and integrated dynamic simulation is original and represents an added value to the state‐of‐the‐art in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine facility management practices in the Nigerian healthcare sector, exploring approaches and identifying challenges facing effective healthcare facilities management. The purpose is to contribute to the development of a framework for enhancing healthcare facility management efficiency in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a sequential in-depth exploratory qualitative research approach. The data collection involved conducting semi-structured interviews with 15 facility managers from diverse healthcare organisations in Nigeria. The qualitative data collected were analysed using thematic analysis.

Findings

The study reveals scheduled, unscheduled and mixed approaches as the three facility management approaches used in Nigeria. It also substantiates the underdeveloped nature of facility management in Nigeria's healthcare sector, exacerbated by challenges such as socioeconomic, operational, technological and regulatory challenges.

Practical implications

The study uncovers systemic issues affecting have attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and advocates for a comprehensive approach to enhance healthcare infrastructure, contributing to improved health outcomes and sustainable development.

Originality/value

This research uniquely uncovers the hidden challenges facing effective healthcare facility management in Nigeria, providing a foundation for stakeholders to formulate solutions and rescue the struggling state of healthcare facilities in the country.

Abstract

In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, transparency became a rhetorical token used to provide a solution to financial problems. This study examines how transparency materialized in the context of the European securitization industry, which was largely blamed for the credit crunch. The authors show that although transparency was broadly associated with a political call for financial system reform, in the European securitization industry it provided the basis on which to repurpose its market infrastructure. The authors introduce the concept of transparency work to show that transparency is a market achievement organized as a standardization network of heterogeneous actors aiming at establishing a new calculative infrastructure for managing credit risk. Combining insights from information infrastructure research and Economic Sociology, the authors contribute to a distributed and networked understanding of information infrastructure development.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine the intention of online cash waqf donations among Indonesian Muslim youth for micro enterprises (MEs) financing. Therefore, the contribution of Muslim youth in supporting MEs can be accelerated to solve some interrelated social and economic issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This study integrates the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the technology acceptance model (TAM) partially relevant to research characteristics. A questionnaire survey is used as a data collection approach to acquire responses from 180 Indonesian Muslim youth. The data obtained are analysed using smart partial least squares-structural equation modelling to answer the research hypothesis and obtain conclusions.

Findings

Religiosity, awareness and perceived behavioural control are significant factors determining the intention to donate online cash waqf for MEs financing. Religiosity plays an important role in building attitudes and perceived awareness of Muslim youth’s behaviour and intention to donate online cash waqf for MEs financing.

Research limitations/implications

The analysed factors could be used as guidelines for better planning and implementing digital-based cash waqf marketing strategies for Nazir (waqf institutions). Regulators (Government and National Waqf Board) must provide better regulations for digital waqf platforms and policies for cash waqf financing for MEs. Researchers could investigate the other theory and cash waqf financing model in low-risk MEs’ empowerment. This study will also broaden cash waqf literacy for MEs financing.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous study addressed the intention of Muslim youth in Indonesia towards online cash waqf to empower MEs. This study develops models by combining TPB and TAM with additional constructs to determine the intention to donate online cash waqf for MEs financing that have been experiencing difficulties accessing banking financing.
