Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examines the relationship between doom-scrolling and employee performance among Generation Z working in the information technology (IT) sector in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study followed a quantitative research approach with a descriptive research design. A purposive sampling technique is used in the study. A sample of 393 Generation Z employees of the IT at the locations in and around the Chandigarh region of northern India was considered in the study. The data were collected primarily through a survey questionnaire and analyzed through structural equation modeling.

Findings

The findings of the study reveal the significant impact of doom-scrolling on employee performance among the Gen Z of the IT sector in India.

Research limitations/implications

The present study has measured the direct impact of doom scrolling on employee performance. However, the possibilities of other factors such as work stress and work-life balance as mediators cannot be ruled out for an indirect relationship between doom scrolling and employee performance.

Practical implications

The findings of the study state that doom scrolling has a significant impact on the employee performance of Gen Z employees in the IT sector of India. Such findings will be an insight into the other service sector of India such as health care and hospitality in recognizing the pattern of behavior followed by Gen Z employees toward social media, technology and job performance.

Social implications

The findings will be imperative to Gen Z and other segments of the population of society also in understanding the role of addiction to social media and technology can be disruptive.

Originality/value

The study is useful in understanding the role of addiction to social media and technology can be disruptive. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first of its kind to understand how doom scrolling significantly affects employee performances in the IT sector of India.

Abstract

Purpose

The present research study aims to understand the cause-and-effect reasons behind the job-hopping practices followed by Gen Z employees in the industry 5.0 in India. Further, in the tandem of efforts, the research study has examined the direct and indirect relationship among novice behaviour, social alienation and job-hopping in Gen Z in the information technology sector of Industry 5.0 in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The 533 Gen Z or millennial employees were chosen from northern India Industry 5.0 following the non-probability purposive sampling technique. The study follows the quantitative research approach, and the data were collected through a survey questionnaire based on standardized measuring instruments. Further, the gathered data were analysed using the structure equation modelling.

Findings

The study’s findings confer the significant direct impact of novice behaviour on job-hopping. While measuring the indirect relationship, the partial mediation effect was noticed in the relationship among novice behaviour, social alienation and job-hopping in the Gen Z employees of Industry 5.0 in India.

Originality/value

The present study will be beneficial to the investors to recognize the job-hopping reasons in Industry 5.0. Further, Gen Z employees and academicians will also receive insight into the cause and effect behind job-hopping. Such will minimize the gap between industry and academia and help Gen Z attain stable employment in Industry 5.0.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the chapter is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the social sustainability of tourism in Uttarakhand, which is located in the Himalayan region in the developing country of India. The chapter also throws light on the state's governmental level interventions amidst the pandemic to restore social sustainability in the tourist destinations and debates on how social sustainability can be restored in the region.

Design/Methodology/Approach: The chapter is conceptual in nature and based upon secondary sources.

Findings: The finding highlights how the current pandemic has exacerbated the social sustainability in tourist destinations in several ways and how government steps to restore social sustainability are appreciable in the short term, but much more needs to be done in the long run.

Research Limitations/Implications: As the chapter is based on secondary literature, the study based on primary work is suggested to give a much clearer picture of the prevailing ground reality.

Practical Implications: The chapter highlights the possibilities of bringing new sustainability ideas and initiating well-being programmes for the local community during and after a pandemic that the government can adopt.

Social Implications: The chapter identifies critical social implications in terms of inequities and challenges in restoring social sustainability in tourist places amidst the pandemic.

Originality/Value: This study provides novel insight into the change in social sustainability in tourism amidst the coronavirus pandemic, which has been overlooked in tourism studies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to synergize the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory with the Intelligent Career theory (ICT) to identify the potential influence of career competencies (CCs) on individual work performance.

Design/methodology/approach

We explore a motivational process within JD-R theory, where CCs such as knowing-why, knowing-how, and knowing-whom serve as personal resources to optimize contextual performance (CP), task performance (TP), and reduce counterproductive work behavior (CWB). The study comprises two phases with samples of human resource (HR) professionals in India. Phase-1 (N = 107) involves adapting measurement instruments through exploratory factor analysis, while phase-2 (N = 396) tests the model using structural equation modeling. We applied the confirmatory factor analysis marker technique, with “conflict avoidance” as the non-ideal marker variable.

Findings

Our research indicates that CCs positively influence TP based on statistical and substantive significance. However, their influence on CP and CWB lacks substantive significance.

Research limitations/implications

This study enhances the JD-R theory by highlighting individual performance as a key outcome of personal resources, like CCs, within the theory’s motivational process.

Practical implications

Organizations can structure skill development programs to align with specific CCs and desired outcomes, using them as benchmarks to assess effectiveness.

Originality/value

To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to apply both JD-R theory and ICT in a work context, specifically among Indian HR professionals, which remains an unexplored area. Additionally, we assume that CCs may initiate motivation independently, even in the absence of job resources.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze how risk tolerance is influenced by bull and bear market phases, age and professional work experience (PWE) of investors in emerging economies. The authors also analyze how different market phases (bull and bear) influence risk tolerance of investors in emerging economies for different age groups and with varying PWE.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses two quantitative methods, one-way ANOVA and hierarchical regression model (HLM) to analyze individual investors' financial risk tolerance (FRT) in India.

Findings

The authors find that age and PWE have positive relationship with FRT behavior. However, interactions of these variables with market phase variable indicate that risk tolerance has nonlinear increasing relationship with investor's age and PWE. The risk tolerance of older investors is consistently high in both bull and bear market conditions, while young investors display a nonlinear risk behavior in different market conditions.

Practical implications

The study suggests that financial planners should include a longitudinal risk profiling of investors based on age groups, PWE and the current market phase to better understand investors' FRT and also to prefer more context-specific advice to investors in emerging economies, which, consequently, result in increasing the retail investors' interest in otherwise sparsely participated equity market.

Originality/value

Interaction effect of bull and bear market phases on relationship between age and PWE and FRT has been scantly studied.

Abstract

Purpose

The novel coronavirus has not only caused significant illness and loss of life, it has caused major disruption at local, national and global levels. While the healthcare industry is experiencing growth during the pandemic, disruption to travel has affected medical tourism. This article considers the short-term factors affecting medical tourism and how they could be mitigated by incorporating technological advances to secure long-term growth.

Design/methodology/approach

The study examines data provided by the Indian government as well as from non-government sources available in the public domain to review the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on medical tourism. The authors also examine data on technological advances in the healthcare industry that could help to reduce the impact of the pandemic.

Findings

This study’s findings show that while in-person services have been seriously impacted in the short term, technological adaptation of medical services to facilitate remote medical consultation has significantly increased. This has enlarged the business opportunities available to hospitals and general practitioners, and it could be leveraged to enhance medical tourism.

Originality/value

The article provides an analysis of the impact of the pandemic on medical tourism and how technology could be used to overcome short-term negative impacts and support longer-term development.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the present state of research related to omnichannel retail, investigates retail's different sub-areas and suggests future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

The subdomains of omnichannel retail have been identified using a keyword co-occurrence network (KCN) map and content analysis. The 5W1H method assisted in finding the bibliographies of 258 SCOPUS-indexed and ABDC-ranked journal articles and showcasing the omnichannel retail landscape.

Findings

Most research on omnichannel retail is concentrated on five subdomains: customer behaviour, channel integration, technological innovation, supply chain and operations and strategy. The study's conceptual framework illustrates the omnichannel retailing environment and the variables that must be considered whilst establishing an omnichannel strategic vision. Besides, future researchers have been urged to concentrate on interdisciplinary research, as a seamless experience is unachievable if focussed on a single subdomain.

Research limitations/implications

There is a slight probability of missing out on some good articles as this study considered only those articles that have been published in SCOPUS and ranked by the ABDC quality list.

Practical implications

This study emphasises that for businesses to capitalise on the omnichannel model, the businesses must undergo a transformation involving technology convergence, customer-centricity and internal process reorganisation that integrates consumer feedback to co-create value. When a business adopts an omnichannel model, the business's priorities shift. Rather than depending solely on technology, faster delivery and channel integration, an omnichannel strategy requires strong leadership, a clear vision, training for all stakeholders and an understanding of customer pain points to reach the full potential.

Originality/value

The illustration of the omnichannel retail landscape using the 5W1H methodology and antecedents-decisions-outcomes (ADO) framework.
