Abstract

Abstract

Tourism policy is a generic term with many interpretations. For too long time tourism policy has been identified with promotion of the public sector. Nowadays the content is much more embracing. The first section of this contribution briefly describes the evolution in this content and deal with the present meaning that is given to tourism policy. “Competitiveness” and “sustainability” are the the two key terms in the modern view. The situation of Bruges with respect to those two core notions is the central theme of this contribution. For the analysis of competitiveness the Porter approach is an interesting instrument. This leads to the strenghts and weaknesses of Bruges with respect of competitiveness. Sustainability was always a major element in the tourism policy of Bruges.

Abstract

Through a combination of human skills and computer support systems the Research Library of the Greater London Council (GLC) provides the politician and the professional officer with a highly responsive service. Development has been achieved through constant attention to the changing needs of the customer within the GLC and throughout the London Boroughs. Its stock resources are unique and it now has the ability through the use of new technology to introduce new services, e.g. a third database and new services for London Borough finance officers are being seriously considered. This is despite the threat to its existence arising from the abolition of the GLC. Services currently provided such as ACOMPLINE and URBALINE and other activities of the Research Library are outlined.

Abstract

Evolution of Micro‐Models. Unlike the overall development in consumer research, specialized modeling of tourist behavior mainly occurred on the aggregate level. Macroeconomic demand or gravity and trip‐generation models are well known among scholars of tourism (Archer 1976, Vanhove 1979) while the individual tourist decision process has not been a subject of great priority. Modeling on the disaggregate level apart from some exceptions in travel behavior and mode selection (Tybout and Hauser 1981; Barff, Mackay and Olshavsky 1982) rarely exceeds the standard technique of flow‐charting. Gallichan (1976) and Go (1981) offer typical examples of ad hoc defined stages in the tourist decision sequence.

Abstract

This chapter examines the role of stress and emotional well-being as critical antecedents of important outcomes in the military context. In it, we provide a framework for understanding the sources of stress among military personnel. Using this model, we review the risk factors associated with combat and deployment cycles in addition to protective factors, such as personality characteristics and social support, which mitigate the effects of stress on emotional well-being and performance. Finally, we evaluate efforts by military organizations to enhance the emotional well-being of service members through training programs designed to build resiliency.
