Abstract
Outlines the issues facing those providing access through networked CD‐ROM databases, looking in particular at the limitations to users. Profiles the University of Wisconsin‘s solutions to these problems include the use of tape loading onto several computers and the implementation of a Silver Platter ERL server. Looks at the issues these solutions caused. Assesses Adaptive Computer Technologies in General Library Systems and mentions areas for future development.

The library technology group help desk is described, and the tools, procedures, and personnel for providing technical support to the campus libraries and library production systems are explained. Library production systems include both the public EL and the services and applications used by library staff to do their work. Developing and supporting the SilverPlatter ERL and Beilstein Minerva Consortium databases is also covered.

Abstract
This section describes the clients, servers, and networks that comprise the EL. The technical and administrative process of integrating campus library LANs for accessing CD‐ROM databases is explained. A timeline is provided highlighting the major events in the development of the Campus OPAC, the suite of EL database resources, library computer networks and public and staff workstations.
