A learning organisation is defined as one which communicates a sense of organisational achievement associated with personal development for all employees. Visits to several US companies are discussed, and influences on organisational learning described. It is concluded that no major differences attributable to national culture exist between US and UK companies. Ideas are suggested to promote organisational learning.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper provides an introduction to research in the field of image forensics and asks whether advances in the field of algorithm development and digital forensics will facilitate the examination of images in the scientific publication process in the near future.

Design/methodology/approach

This study looks at the status quo of image analysis in the peer review process and evaluates selected articles from the field of Digital Image and Signal Processing that have addressed the discovery of copy-move, cut-paste and erase-fill manipulations.

Findings

The article focuses on forensic research and shows that, despite numerous efforts, there is still no applicable tool for the automated detection of image manipulation. Nonetheless, the status quo for examining images in scientific publications remains visual inspection and will likely remain so for the foreseeable future. This study summarizes aspects that make automated detection of image manipulation difficult from a forensic research perspective.

Research limitations/implications

Results of this study underscore the need for a conceptual reconsideration of the problems involving image manipulation with a view toward the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in conjunction with library and information science (LIS) expertise on information integrity.

Practical implications

This study not only identifies a number of conceptual challenges but also suggests areas of action that the scientific community can address in the future.

Originality/value

Image manipulation is often discussed in isolation as a technical challenge. This study takes a more holistic view of the topic and demonstrates the necessity for a multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract

Recently great interest has developed for a high speed, flexible machine vision system which can accurately determine solder paste and component placement for both process verification and quality control inspection. Present SMT inspection systems must cope with the unpredictable appearance of components and backgrounds and are often used only to determine presence and absence. This paper describes a new approach which combines greyscale data with a three‐dimensional map of the board under test. Originally this method was proposed as a robust technique for locating components in low contrast greyscale images. However, experience working with manufacturers and developers of placement equipment has shown that emerging SMT inspection requirements indicate the importance of three‐dimensional information. In addition to the detection of components and measurement of orientation, examples are shown of solder paste volume measurements, lead co‐planarity, and tombstone effect detection.

On April 4, 2007, Don Imus, one of the company&s most popular talk show personalities made comments on the air regarding the Rutgers women&s basketball team. According to the transcription from Media Matters for America, Imus said, “ That&s some nappy-headed hos there. I&m gonna tell you that now, man, that&s some … woo. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like … kinda like … I don&t know.” At first, the comments did not seem out of the ordinary for one of radio&s “shock jocks.” However, as the public reaction grew, the situation changed considerably. Under pressure from the public, Moonves reluctantly suspended Imus. But it was too little too late. By the end of the day on April 11, analysts estimated that $2.5 million in advertising revenue was lost. On April 12, Moonves terminated Don Imus& contract.

After Moonves fired Imus, there was still a lot to consider. He really wanted a way for the company to meet the demands of the company&s stakeholders. In addition, he wanted to avoid any more distractions from the firm&s normal day-to-day operations.

The case discusses how Poppy Gustafsson (Gustafsson) (she), Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of Darktrace plc, one of the world’s largest cyber-AI companies, is reinventing enterprise security by using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and respond to cyberthreats to businesses and protect the public. Darktrace’s technology leverages the principles of the human immune system to autonomously defend organizations from cyberattacks, insider threats and AI warfare. In addition to leading a cutting-edge cybersecurity company, Gustafsson evangelizes gender diversity at Darktrace where 40% of employees and four C-level executives are women, a number nearly unheard of in the tech sector.The case chronicles the journey of Gustafsson and how she led the company to growth and success. Under her leadership, Darktrace has grown into a market leader in the AI cybersecurity space serving 5,600 customers in 100 countries, as of June 2021. Gustafsson not only redefined the cybersecurity space but also inspired women to pursue a career in the field of cybersecurity. She also collaborated with a social enterprise called WISE to encourage more girls to consider STEM careers.However, along the way, she faced several challenges including growing competition, procuring funds from investors, cybersecurity talent shortage and training personnel. Going forward, some of the challenges before Gustafsson would be to meet the changing cyber protection demands of customers; hire, train and retain highly skilled cybersecurity personnel; beat the competition in a saturated cybersecurity services space; sustain revenue growth; and post profits as Darktrace had incurred losses every year since its inception.

Abstract

Purpose

Agile software development (ASD) is currently an emerging approach in software engineering for improving quality, initially advocated by a group of 17 software professionals who practice a set of “lightweight” methods, and share a common set of values of software development. Owing to the attractive claims of successes of the ASD approach, many traditional projects, which used to practice plan‐driven software development, are gradually transitioning into ASD‐based development. This paper seeks to report the results from a survey‐based ex‐post‐facto study aimed at determining the relative importance, if any, of the changes traditional plan‐driven software development projects have to undergo to adopt ASD practices.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted using a web‐based survey with ASD practitioners who had experience of practicing plan‐driven software development in the past. ASD practitioners from a wide range of industrial sectors participated in the study. Similarly, the study is not restricted to any specific organisation/project size, culture, or nationality – the respondents were widely geographically distributed across continents.

Findings

The study received 241 responses, of which 165 were usable. The study did not reveal any substantial difference in importance of the four classes of changes hypothesised – changes in culture, changes in management style, changes in knowledge management strategy and changes in development processes. The authors believe that this is an important finding because it is indicative of not isolating one class of changes from another in practical transition exercises. However, another noteworthy observation was that transitioning from heavily process‐centric to short, iterative, test‐driven, and people‐centric development was considered by the largest percentage (roughly 77 per cent) of respondents to be very important. The open‐ended questions in the study also revealed three additional classes of changes: changes in personal characteristics, changes in customer attitude, and changes in knowledge and education of stakeholders.

Originality/value

In this work an attempt was made to gain an understanding of the relative importance of the different critical changes that would be helpful to a project manager who is involved in the transition from traditional plan‐driven software development practices to agile software development practices.

Abstract

As money has come to play a central role in modern society the risk of losing money, financial risk, is a major concern for individuals and societies. Yet the understanding and analysis of financial risk in modern finance theory is very weak and incomplete. Its definitions are muddled with risk management issues, implying that only manageable risks are relevant for scientific analysis. There is also an explicit bias towards measurable risks, implying that unmeasurable risks are somehow irrelevant. Risk analysis in finance is devoid of an ethical stance, a prerequisite for any reasonable discussion of risk. Beck's ‘Risk Society’ is a powerful critique of modern science and its inability to deal with the significant increase in social and ecological risks created by modern industrial society. This paper uses concepts generated by Beck to unravel the various dimensions of financial risk, many of which have hitherto been ignored in the mainstream finance literature. It reveals the extent to which the analysis and understanding of risk in modern finance theory is partial and incomplete. Suggestions are then made for how the analysis of financial risk could be modified to include a wide range of individual, ethical and societal dimensions.
