Abstract
Libraries devote considerable money to providing continuing education and staff development, but initial research suggests that there is little “pay off” to continuing education efforts, that less than half of all training transfers to the work place. While a wide range of activities may be used to promote the transfer of training to the job, evidence shows that librarians do not often engage in such activities. Ways of strengthening support for transfer of training in libraries — and thereby enhancing the performance of the library's personnel — are suggested.

Abstract
Purpose
To demonstrate the need to involve stakeholders (executives, managers, trainers, co‐workers, others) to support performance in the work environment.
Design/methodology/approach
The article explores emerging concepts of moderately and highly complex organizations, and research and best practice findings on the need for stakeholder support for performance. Important factors for support by managers, performance consultants, workers/performers, and other stakeholders are suggested to ensure that knowledge and skills are fully applied to work performance to produce desired organizational results.
Findings
The article identifies new approaches from the literature to support effective performance in organizations. Important research‐based factors are identified that must be provided in the work environment by key stakeholders (executives, managers, co‐workers, customers, suppliers, and others) to support desired performance of both supervised and autonomous workers. An approach is suggested for identifying and organizing stakeholders and their strategies to support performance.
Originality/value
Many stakeholders in organizational systems are not aware of the need to provide visible and ongoing support for effective performance to attain desired organizational results. This article provides research justification for that need and suggests factors that stakeholders should provide to support performance.

Investigates the differences in protocols between arbitral tribunals and courts, with particular emphasis on US, Greek and English law. Gives examples of each country and its way of using the law in specific circumstances, and shows the variations therein. Sums up that arbitration is much the better way to gok as it avoids delays and expenses, plus the vexation/frustration of normal litigation. Concludes that the US and Greek constitutions and common law tradition in England appear to allow involved parties to choose their own judge, who can thus be an arbitrator. Discusses e‐commerce and speculates on this for the future.

Abstract
Those most socially disadvantaged are at a greater risk of common mental disorder (CMD). The need to evaluate the health impact of social policy interventions that aim to reduce social inequalities between the disadvantaged and the better off is well recognised. This paper reports findings from a review to explore evidence on the health impact of UK policy interventions that aim to tackle the key social determinants of CMD. These were previously identified from the literature as cumulative socioeconomic deprivation, unemployment, psychosocial work characteristics, and poor social relationships. We identified some evidence of a positive impact on CMD of urban regeneration schemes, but evidence was sparse on interventions relating to the other determinants. The ability of research to inform policy designed to improve the lives of the disadvantaged could be assisted by a broader definition of what counts as evidence. This may include wider use of qualitative methodologies and a more deliberate focus on social processes known to be implicated in mental health.
