Abstract
Four stages of data validation are discussed by operators as they input data, validating them against their own experience; by an integrated database once the data are input; by systems auditors, continually identifying errors and arranging for them to be rectified; and by managers conducting regular analyses of data accuracy. The resulting data accuracy can reduce waste and improve customer satisfaction and can thereby help a business become more competitive.

Abstract
“A gradual change‐over to gas turbine power plant will take place in some sections of the industrial field during the next fifteen years”. This is the opinion of Mr. G. B. R. Fielden, M.A., M.I.Mech.E., Chief Engineer, Turbine Department, Ruston & Hornsby Ltd., and expressed at the conclusion of his Paper given recently to the Diesel Engine Users' Association. Mr. Fielden's paper was entitled “Operating Experience with a 750 kW Gas Turbine” this type being free from cooling water requirements. He went on to say that this type of power plant will fulfil a need for peak load power plants, for light portable power plants which require no water for their operation, and for traction applications in which the inherent torque conversion characteristic of a free‐running power turbine is an important asset. When methods of blade cooling have been fully developed, the gas turbine may replace some diesel engines and steam turbines.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper reviews the origins of the Ethics Council of the Federation of Social Communication Media of Chile (1991-2019) and looks into the historical circumstances surrounding its creation, the concept of self-regulation as understood by its founders, and the criteria that initially ruled its operation.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative survey of nine contemporary witnesses and the confrontation with the scientific literature.
Findings
The results reveal a significant coincidence with the academic literature both in the description of the concept of self-regulation and in the origin of the ethics councils and of the system under which they operate. However, a series of nuances not usually considered in the concept of self-regulation are described.
Originality/value
This study will help assess the national and international possibilities of self-regulation and the significance of the Chilean ethics council.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a longitudinal, qualitative study exploring changes in the attributional constructions of sense-making in the perceptions and lived experiences of the glass-ceiling among a cohort of female mental health nurses in the National Health Service who participated in a 12-month multi-faceted career and leadership development pilot programme compared to a matched control group.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors interviewed 27 female mental health nurses in the UK who participated in a multi-faceted development programme specifically designed to support female nurses secure career advancement and 27 members of a matched control group who did not experience the programme. Participants engaged in semi-structured telephone interviews at three separate time points (six months apart) over a 12-month period.
Findings
Programme participants differed in their attributional constructions of sense-making in relation to the glass-ceiling over time compared to the matched control group, e.g., triggering understandings and awakenings and re-evaluating the glass-ceiling above when promoted. Findings are used to theorise about the glass-ceiling as a concept that shifts and changes over time as a function of experience.
Practical implications
Practical implications include important organisational outcomes in relation to fostering the career advancement and retention of talented female leaders at all career stages.
Originality/value
The authors present the first known longitudinal, qualitative study to explore changes in attributional constructions of sense-making in perceptions and experiences of the glass-ceiling among female nurses over time compared to a matched control group.

Abstract
Although we all like to believe that there are opportunities for everyone to “make it” in organisations, the nature of hierarchies makes this impossible. Because of the pyramid‐like structure of all work organisations, the majority of middle managers will not be able to reach the highest levels in their organisations. During the 1950s and 1960s, when most organisations were expanding, the extent of the problem was not apparent. However, during the more recessionary times that have prevailed since the 1970s, the proportion of managers who have become “stalled” at the middle levels in the hierarchy has increased dramatically? According to Connor and Fielden and Levinson, it is between the ages of 40–45 that managers typically experience this kind of cessation in their movement upward in the organisation. According to Hunt, “Most middle managers will remain where they are, in the middle, oiling the machinery of our work organizations in what are, essentially, repetitive tasks. And for some this vision will have a time span of 20–30 years” (p. 10).

Abstract
Purpose
While the role of government-funded export promotion programs (EPPs) on the international activities of small ventures has been previously documented, they do not appear to have been hitherto studied in a gendered context. This is unfortunate given the evidence suggesting growing numbers of female entrepreneurs with strong international orientation. Thus, this study aims to provide a better understanding of the experiences and practices of women entrepreneurs with regard to EPPs.
Design/methodology/approach
This study is based on personal interviews with eight female-owned international entrepreneurial ventures in the fashion design industry in Denmark. A qualitative research design was used to explore the experiences of the women entrepreneurs regarding different types of EPPs and their various providers, and the data were analysed and interpreted using the NVivo software program.
Findings
The results show that while the level of awareness of EPPs was generally high, the programs were overwhelmingly perceived to be overly expensive, excessively time-consuming, insufficiently specific and largely irrelevant. When the women business owners had availed themselves of their services, the usefulness of the EPPs was deemed to be largely imperceptible. Plausible explanations for these results may be found in the gendered entrepreneurial literature. The study’s findings provide important gendered insights to government support agencies charged with promoting the internationalisation of female-owned small businesses.
Originality/value
This study presents novel gendered findings of the experiences of female entrepreneurs regarding the role played by EPPs in the growth of their firms on international markets. It contributes to the literature on the growing phenomenon of female international entrepreneurs.

Abstract
Provides an introduction to benchmarking in UK higher education. The introduction of subject benchmarking by the Quality Assurance Agency means that most academics are now aware of the term but they associate it with the process of regulating academic standards through a process of referencing to a subject benchmark statement (regulatory benchmarking). But there are other meanings and applications of benchmarking which focus on the process as an aid to collaborative learning and self‐improvement (collaborative benchmarking). Provides an overview of the concept and methodology and provides examples of the ways in which benchmarking is being used in the UK.
