Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the push and pull motivations of leisure tourists who stay for one or more nights on the Opatija Riviera and explores the causal connection between motivations and loyalty intention with regard to holiday style. It verifies path discrepancy based on generational and educational differences.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected over a four-month period that included the low and high seasons of 2019. In total, 246 useable questionnaires were collected through on-site research. First, exploratory factor analysis was conducted as this was the first tourist loyalty study to be conducted in the Opatija Riviera region. Then, to test for causal significance amongst relationships and differences at the path level, the partial least square method and multigroup analysis (MGA) was undertaken.

Findings

The results showed that overall satisfaction fully mediates the relationship between the two established motivations (novelty seeking and outdoor activity) and loyalty to holiday style and partially between relaxation and loyalty to holiday style. Further, MGA results indicated a significant discrepancy in the relationship between preferred holiday style with regard to educational and age difference.

Originality/value

This study offers new insights regarding a relatively new type of tourist loyalty by developing a theoretical framework that assesses the relationship between loyalty intention and motivation, as well as overall satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to deepen the understanding of job crafting and its consequences. An occupational framework is proposed as an alternative to the exclusive focus of current theory on the individual and job levels of analysis. This model extends job crafting theory by applying a multilevel framework, examining bottom-up and top-down influences of occupations, and explicates the interplay among occupation- and job-level autonomy and job crafting.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a two-study research program using multilevel modeling and moderated mediation analysis. Data were derived from two large-scale archival databases. Study 1 spanned 701 occupations and 50,729 individuals. Study 2 involved 270 occupations and 3,270 individuals.

Findings

Study 1 reveals that nearly one-third of the variability in job crafting is attributable to occupational context. Study 2 shows that occupational contexts moderate individual-level processes, whereby occupational-level crafting moderated the mediated effects between job-level autonomy, job-level crafting and individual-level outcomes.

Practical implications

Results inform interventions that can be used to facilitate job crafting. Increasing autonomy generally increases job crafting, yet this effect does not always hold. This result demonstrates the importance of attending to the occupations in which people work. Also, job crafting is related to positive outcomes for individuals (e.g. satisfaction) but is also linked to some negative consequences (e.g. burnout).

Originality/value

The research empirically demonstrates the need to expand job crafting theory beyond the individual and job levels, as well as offers a deeper and expanded understanding of job crafting and its relationship with people’s occupations.

Abstract

The sense of community in online courses may contribute to the success and the satisfaction of all the students and the integration of the students with disabilities. Therefore, a valid scale to assess sense of community must be used. For this purpose, a questionnaire for the evaluation of all the dimensions of the MacMillan and Chavis (1986) sense of community model, the main theoretical reference in the field, is being developed for use with students of university online courses. The usefulness of such a questionnaire for the planning of interventions to promote the feeling of being a member of a group in online courses is discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

Taking as a case study the city of San Carlos de Bariloche – in northern Patagonia, Argentina – this paper aims to compare its urban structure with previous urbanization models and identify some characteristics of this tourist city that could inspire the construction of an adapted urban model for Latin American tourist cities, particularly those based on natural attractions.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on multivariate analysis of population census data and local economic statistics, this paper compares the residential location of different social groups and the location of main economic activities in Bariloche. First, principal component analysis (PCA) is combined with cluster analysis to classify Bariloche’s neighborhoods. Second, different maps are analyzed to study the location of economic activities, in comparison with previous clusters.

Findings

The results of this paper show that Bariloche partially adjusts to previous urbanization models, as the landscape and physical environment determine the characteristics of its urban growth, as well as the development of tourist activities. Therefore, this paper then proposes an adapted urban model for the case of Bariloche, which could be also contrasted with other Latin American tourist cities in the future.

Originality/value

Bearing in mind that there is no model of Latin American tourist cities so far, this paper tries to analyze to what extent the assumptions and patterns of previous urban models could be adapted to Latin American tourist cities, such as Bariloche, which base their attractiveness and economic dynamism on its natural physical environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the existing literature systematically so as to contribute towards a better understanding of methodological problems of the classical statistical techniques, artificially intelligent expert systems and theoretical approaches to solve the corporate failure syndrome.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presented a systematic review of 83 articles reporting 137 prediction failure models published within 1966-2012 in scholarly reviewed journals in four main disciplines, namely, accounting, finance, banking and economics. The authors performed the systematic literature review with five main sources, namely, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Wiley Interscience, Metalib, Web of Science and Business Source Complete of the Social Sciences. The review modified the approaches used by Aziz and Dar (2006), Ravi and Ravi (2007) and Balcaen and Ooghe (2006).

Findings

The results indicate significant body of prior literature on prediction of corporate failure, but a theoretically sound, highly accurate, simple and widely used corporate failure prediction model for stakeholders has yet to be developed.

Originality/value

This paper contributes towards a systematic understanding of the methodological problems associated with the statistical, artificially intelligent expert systems and theoretical approaches to solve the corporate failure prediction problems faced by firms in 11 countries.
