Abstract

A series of six laboratory experiments was conducted in 1986 and 1987 to examine the impact of minimum prices on the market for wine grapes, similar to what has existed in South Australia. In the experiments, four of the seven subjects designated as “grape‐growers” were members of winery co‐operatives, whose methood of payment to their members differs from that of commercial wineries. Three subjects were designated as “wineries”. Three market structures were examined: minimum prices, and two non‐minimum price regimens, one with no information to buyers and sellers about market prices for grapes, and the other with prices being posted as trading within the session proceeded. The results with respect to minimum prices were predictable enough: more grapes were left unsold to “rot on the vine”, fewer grapes were sold to wineries, and the quantity delivered to co‐operatives was increased. Grower profits in aggregate were not significantly different with a minimum price, due to more grapes being left unsold. Buyers′ profits were much lower with minimum prices. Because well over half of the crop was traded before prices were posted in the sessions with the information about prices, the effect of providing information was not in general significant. It is possible that a different experimental design would have led to significant improvements in efficiency and profits using additional information.

Abstract

From the standpoint of a policy maker who has access to a number of expert forecasts, the uncertainty of a combined or ensemble forecast should be interpreted as that of a typical forecaster randomly drawn from the pool. This uncertainty formula should incorporate forecaster discord, as justified by (i) disagreement as a component of combined forecast uncertainty, (ii) the model averaging literature, and (iii) central banks’ communication of uncertainty via fan charts. Using new statistics to test for the homogeneity of idiosyncratic errors under the joint limits with both T and n approaching infinity simultaneously, the authors find that some previously used measures can significantly underestimate the conceptually correct benchmark forecast uncertainty.

Abstract

The health movement that has been sweeping this country has given rise to increased consumer awareness of both prescription and nonprescription medications. One of several responses to this heightened interest has been a plethora of drug information publications aimed at the general public audience. Some of these publications became so popular they attained positions on the best‐seller list. At the same time books, such as the PDR, that had generally been available only to health professionals began to find their way into popular bookstores.

Abstract

Neuroimaging research has substantially enhanced our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of typical and atypical learning in children. These developments can advance the design of novel approaches to diagnosis and intervention for learning disabilities. Despite the promise of educational neuroscience, there are still walls between neuroscience and special education researchers such that more collaboration and understanding are needed between these disciplines. This chapter attempts to break down the walls by discussing how neuroimaging techniques can be incorporated into special education research. We also present arguments as to why neuroscience is “the next big thing” in special education research and the obstacles that must be overcome in order for neuroscience to be incorporated into education research. To describe how neurobiology might impact special education, we focus primarily on reading disability. We believe that educational neuroscience can aid in the identification and intervention of other learning disorders as well.

Abstract

Two questionnaires were developed in order to gain some insight into medical librarians' attitude towards the various forms in which the Medline database is offered — printed version, online database and CD‐ROM. One was sent to about 200 medical libraries in The Netherlands and the other was distributed among the users of the Core Medline/Ebsco CD‐ROM disc in The Netherlands. Responses to the first questionnaire produced answers about the altitude among Dutch librarians towards this new technology and the current rate of acceptance. Responses to the second questionnaire produced insight on the user audience, as far as current use of printed bibliographies and online services is concerned as well as the users altitude towards Medline on CD‐ROM and the preferred time span and journal selection for the CD‐ROM version of Medline.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to contribute to the analysis concerning how inflation forecasts from different economic agents (professional forecasters and consumers) lead to varying levels of central bank credibility and how it affects the monetary policy interest rate and its expectations.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the Brazilian economy data from June 2007 to May 2022, the authors provide evidence that is useful for search mechanisms that improve the conduct of monetary policy through the management of inflation expectations. The authors perform several ordinary least squares and generalized method of moments regressions inspired by the Taylor rule principle. In brief, the benchmark model considers that the monetary policy interest rate and its expectations respond to departures of inflation expectations to the target (a proxy for central bank credibility) and the level of economic activity.

Findings

The main result of the analysis is that inflation expectations from professional forecasters and consumers imply different perceptions of central bank credibility that affect the monetary policy interest rate and expectations for horizons until one year ahead.

Originality/value

The novelty that the authors bring from the analysis is that the authors calculate central bank credibility by taking into account the “public beliefs” of different economic agents. Furthermore, the authors analyze the effect of central bank credibility from professional forecasters and consumers on the monetary policy interest rate and its expectations.

Abstract

There is a statutory obligation for pharmaceutical companies to record reports of adverse reactions to their drugs. The storage and retrieval of these reports, within an operating post‐coordinate information retrieval system poses a number of problems due to their multidimensional nature. The use of links and roles to solve this problem is proscribed on economic grounds and so a system, currently being developed, is described using ‘generic role indicators’ as a primary device for preventing false drops followed by a rapid visual sort using an intermediate file on cards. Considerable time savings have been achieved by the unification of retrieval sources.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effects of three significant events – the 1994 CFA currency depreciation, the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC), and instances of political coups – on the relationships between FDI inflow, economic growth, and governance within the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) countries. It seeks to evaluate how these events influence the linkages between FDI, economic growth, and governance, to aid the understanding of responses to external shocks and internal political disruptions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a panel Vector Autoregression (VAR) analysis using data from 1990 to 2019 by exploring the dynamic relationships among FDI inflow, economic growth, and aggregate governance indicators within the CEMAC sub-region. The analysis was conducted utilizing the EViews software package, facilitating robust examination through the introduction of the Bayesian VAR to facilitate the interpretation of parameters and the data.

Findings

The results indicate that, contrary to initial hypotheses, growth and governance do not emerge as determinants for attracting FDI within the CEMAC sub-region. However, governance stands out as a crucial determining factor for economic growth. Furthermore, the study suggests that the 1994 CFA currency depreciation, the 2008 GFC, and instances of political coups did not significantly impact FDI, growth, and governance within these countries. Despite the potential vulnerability of the CEMAC countries to external shocks, the effects of these events on the dynamics of FDI, economic growth, and governance were not apparent. Notably, political instability, as evidenced by coups, emerges as a significant factor shaping the interactions between FDI, growth, and governance in CEMAC countries.

Research limitations/implications

These findings have significant implications for policymakers and stakeholders in the CEMAC countries. Understanding that governance has a central role in driving economic growth places great importance of prioritizing governance reforms to foster sustainable development. Moreover, the identification of political instability as a key determinant affecting the relationships between FDI, growth, and governance emphasizes the need for political stability and effective governance structures to attract and sustain FDI inflows as well as foster economic growth.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by offering insights into the linkages between FDI, economic growth, governance, and external shocks within the CEMAC sub-region. By examining the specific impacts of the 1994 CFA currency depreciation, the 2008 GFC, and political coups on these dynamics, the study provides original perspectives on the resilience of CEMAC countries to external and internal disruptions.

Abstract

My object in compiling this bibliography has been to list reference materials that will be useful to pharmacy students, faculty, and reference librarians working with them. While the bibliography is not intended to be comprehensive, I have covered the essential reference sources as well as some additional titles which are certainly desirable. Some of the books have been around for many years and are now in new editions; others are just appearing on the scene. I included periodicals only when they served a special purpose such as to offer a source of statistical or marketing information. Several of the references could have appeared in more than one place and, in the interest of brevity, I arbitrarily chose the category that seems most appropriate to me.
