Abstract

A semi‐implicit semi‐Lagrangian mixed finite‐difference finite‐volume model for the shallow water equations on a rotating sphere is considered. The main features of the model are the finite‐volume approach for the continuity equation and the vectorial treatment of the momentum equation. Pressure and Coriolis terms in the momentum equation and velocity in the continuity equation are treated semi‐implicitly. Discretization of this model led to the introducion, in a previous paper, of a splitting technique which highly reduces the computational effort for the numerical solution. In this paper we solve the full set of equations, without splitting, introducing an ad hoc algorithm. A von Neumann stability analysis of this scheme is performed to establish the unconditional stability of the new proposed method. Finally, we compare the efficiency of the two approaches by numerical experiments on a standard test problem. Results show that, due to the devised algorithm, the solution of the full system of equations is much more accurate while slightly increasing the computational cost.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to solve linear and non-linear shallow water wave equations using homotopy perturbation method (HPM). HPM is a straightforward method to handle linear and non-linear differential equations. As such here, one-dimensional shallow water wave equations have been considered to solve those by HPM. Interesting results are reported when the solutions of linear and non-linear equations are compared.

Design/methodology/approach

HPM was used in this study.

Findings

Solution of one-dimensional linear and non-linear shallow water wave equations and comparison of linear and non-linear coupled shallow water waves from the results obtained using present method.

Originality/value

Coupled non-linear shallow water wave equations are solved.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is the development of a new density-based (DB) semi-Lagrangian method to speed up the conventional pressure-based (PB) semi-Lagrangian methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The semi-Lagrangian-based solvers are typically PB, i.e. semi-Lagrangian pressure-based (SLPB) solvers, where a Poisson equation is solved for obtaining the pressure field and ensuring a divergence-free flow field. As an elliptic-type equation, the Poisson equation often relies on an iterative solution, so it can create a challenge of parallel computing and a bottleneck of computing speed. This study proposes a new DB semi-Lagrangian method, i.e. the semi-Lagrangian artificial compressibility (SLAC), which replaces the Poisson equation by a hyperbolic continuity equation with an added artificial compressibility (AC) term, so a time-marching solution is possible. Without the Poisson equation, the proposed SLAC solver is faster, particularly for the cases with more computational cells, and better suited for parallel computing.

Findings

The study compares the accuracy and the computing speeds of both SLPB and SLAC solvers for the lid-driven cavity flow and the step-flow problems. It shows that the proposed SLAC solver is able to achieve the same results as the SLPB, whereas with a 3.03 times speed up before using the OpenMP parallelization and a 3.35 times speed up for the large grid number case (512 × 512) after the parallelization. The speed up can be improved further for larger cases because of increasing the condition number of the coefficient matrixes of the Poisson equation.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a method of avoiding solving the Poisson equation, a typical computing bottleneck for semi-Lagrangian-based fluid solvers by converting the conventional PB solver (SLPB) to the DB solver (SLAC) through the addition of the AC term. The method simplifies and facilitates the parallelization process of semi-Lagrangian-based fluid solvers for modern HPC infrastructures, such as OpenMP and GPU computing.

Abstract

The primitive equations of a barotropic atmosphere in isobaric co‐ordinates are reformulated, in order to express the geopotential gradient as a function of the pressure at the Earth’s surface. Furthermore, the free surface equation is written in conservative form. A finite difference, semi‐implicit, semi‐Lagrangian scheme in isobaric co‐ordinates is developed. The numerical scheme is mass conservative, is proven to be stable and requires the solution of a single five‐diagonal system. Numerical simulations show that the model captures the main dynamical features of large scale atmospheric motion.

Abstract

Purpose

The present research aimed to understand how to predict and promote plant-based meat (PBM) consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

In Study 1 (N = 550), the authors investigated the psychosocial antecedents of the intentions to add PBM and to replace animal meat with PBM. In Study 2 (N = 390), the authors tested the effectiveness of different environmental messages promoting PBM consumption. The authors compared the effects of an addition message condition (i.e. a message promoting the addition of PBM to one's diet), a replacement message condition (i.e. a message promoting the replacement of animal meat with PBM) and a control condition (i.e. no message). In both studies, the authors considered the moderation of past PBM consumption (PMB eaters vs PBM noneaters).

Findings

Study 1 showed that a positive attitude towards eating PBM and a high awareness of the environmental consequences of meat production were key antecedents of participants' intention to eat PBM. The role of the other psychosocial antecedents varied according to past PBM consumption. Study 2 showed that both addition and replacement messages increased non-PBM eaters' positive attitude towards eating PBM and in turn willingness to pay for PBM. Instead, only replacement messages increased PBM eaters' willingness to pay for PBM.

Originality/value

The present research developed a model integrating the key psychosocial predictors of people's intentions to eat PBM. Furthermore, it is the first research that compared the persuasiveness of different environment messages to promote PBM consumption.

Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to how the inquiry-based learning (IBL) approach is being used by colleges and universities around the world to strengthen the interconnections between teaching, learning, and research within STEM programs. This chapter provides a synthesis and analysis of the chapters in the volume, which present a range of case studies and empirical research on how IBL is being used across a range of courses across a range of institutions within STEM programs. Based on these findings, this chapter argues that the IBL approach has great potential to enhance and transform teaching and learning. Given the growing demands placed on education to meet a diverse range of complex political, economic, and social problems and personal needs, this chapter argues that education should be a place where students learn “how-to-learn” – where increasingly higher levels of self-directed learning is fostered – and where students grow in the three key areas of learning: affectively, behaviorally, and cognitively. To that end, this chapter argues that IBL, if designed and implemented properly, can be an important approach to enhancing and transforming teaching and learning in higher education.

Abstract

Purpose

This study in Iran examined the role of internal and external psychological factors that affected green purchase intention. Moreover, it examined these variables' direct and indirect effects and green purchase intention on green purchase behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

An extended version of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) was employed, based on which a theoretical model was designed to reach the authors’ aim. An online questionnaire was used to collect data. For data analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, the bootstrapping method and the Preschool Language Scale (PLS) product-indicator approach were conducted to test the proposed conceptual model.

Findings

Results show that self-identity, self-interest, self-efficacy and a growth mindset have a positive impact on green purchase intention. However, the study found no predictive effect from peer influence and warm glow. In addition, self-efficacy and green purchase intention significantly affect green purchase behavior. The study reveals that green purchase intention substantially mediates the relationship between self-interest, growth mindset, warm glow and green purchase behavior. Further, warm glow moderates the impact of peer influence, self-identity and self-efficacy on green purchase intention. This study emphasizes the critical role of dispositional factors on green purchase intention and behavior.

Originality/value

Few studies consider the effect of the individual self, a growth mindset, a warm glow and peer influence on green purchase intention simultaneously. In addition, the authors introduced a different version of the TPB model. Further, this research also conducted how these variables, directly and indirectly, affect green purchase behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

Pursuing sustainable development has become a necessity for all types of businesses, owing to the increasing sensitivity of stakeholders towards pollution and environmental degradation related to economic activities. To sustain this approach, investments supporting green innovations (GIs) are required. The paper investigates how stakeholders affect the choices of companies to pursue sustainable development objectives through the use of GIs.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 222 innovative Italian SMEs was collected and analysed using the partial least squares structural equation modelling technique and the importance performance map analysis.

Findings

The authors found that the stakeholders with not-contractual ties with SMEs affect GIs. Among stakeholders with not-contractual ties only workforce represents a strong stimulus to eco-innovate. Anyway, contrary to expectations, public administrations exert a negative influence; that is, they appear to hinder SMEs approach towards GIs.

Practical implications

This paper contributes to filling the knowledge gaps about the factors stimulating innovative SMEs' investments in GIs. Specifically, by analysing the stakeholders' influences, many policy indications emerge, such as extending facilities and regulations, encouraging partnerships and networking and attracting private and institutional investors.

Originality/value

Until now, the prominent interest of researchers and policymakers has been focused almost exclusively on large manufacturing corporations because of their higher ecological footprints and the belief that SMEs are supposed to be mainly followers rather than first adopters of innovations. But in many international areas, the role of SMEs is widely predominant, and these SMEs chiefly operate in the service sectors.
