Abstract
Cotton fabrics can be dyed with reactive and/or direct dyes in aqueous baths under certain specific conditions of pH, salt, temperature, time, etc., and rendered fire retardant through reaction with reactive phosphonopropionamide compounds. In the presence of reactive tertiary amines and reactive phosphorous derivatives, cotton fabrics can be dyed with reactive, direct or acid dyes in the absence of the usual added alkalis and salts, and in the mean time, the fabric becomes fire retardant with wash and wear properties. To verify such claims, reactive aminating agents are synthesized by reacting different amine compounds that have various numbers of amino groups with acryl amide and formaldehyde. The pad-dry-cure technique is applied to treated fabrics with aqueous finishing formulations that contain dyestuff and reactive amine-compounds; the cotton fabric will simultaneously impart reactive dyeing, easy-care inishing and fire-retardant properties. Systematic studies show that in the presence of 6% weight/weight, reactive amine in an aqueous formulation yields cotton fabric with the least loss in tensile strength and elongation at break, and an enhancement to the crease recovery angle. By adding the dyestuff to the aqueous formulation at fixed nitrogen content for treated cotton (0.2%) under identical dyeing conditions, the colour strength (K/S) increases for dyed cotton. The fastness properties of the dyed fabric are improved or remain unaltered for the three types of dyestuffs used

Abstract
Reactive amine-amide derivatives are prepared via the addition reaction of different primary and secondary amines on acrylamide (AAm) using equivalent molar ratios and the resultant product is methylolated using equivalent amounts of HCHO. Bis (hydroxymethyl carbamoylethyl) ethylamine (I), tetra (hydroxymethyl carbamoyl ethyl) ethylene diamine (II) and penta (hydroxymethyl carbamoylethyl) diethylenetriamine (III) are prepared by reaction between ethylamine or ethylenediamine or diethylenetriamine and AAm. N-Hydroxydiethyl-phosphonopropianamide (IV) is prepared via Mecheal addition reaction of diethylphosphite with AAm followed by reaction with HCHO. To impact flame-retardancy and easy care finishing to cotton fabric aqueous formulations of compound IV, etherified methylolated melamine (EMM) and/or compounds III, II or I have been prepared. Cotton fabric treated by pad–dry–cure system, the drying time was investigated. Cured cotton fabrics are fire retardant if the aqueous formulation contains 12 % w/w of compound IV and 6 % w/w of EMM respectively. Physical and mechanical properties are less deteriorated when compound III, II or I are used instead of EMM and the liberated HCHO is almost decreased to one half by replacing EMM by one of the prepared methylol compounds. Treatments with compounds III, II or I is impart antibacterial and antifungus properties to the finished fabric.

Purpose
The design of buildings is crucial to functionality and safety for senior citizens. People often refrain from talking about old age and its related support; however, it is inevitable. The paper aims to highlight the essentials of a home design that considers the aged citizens in Nigeria.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative research technique is used in the study. A closed-ended questionnaire and an interview were used to gather information on the requirements for aging-in-place basics in home design from middle-aged and elderly households.
Findings
Findings from the study revealed that a majority of the respondents considered old age as a phase of life to prioritize in home design. Lighting, furniture and fixtures and electrical installations are variously perceived by the respondents as aging-in-place essentials.
Practical implications
The study has far-reaching consequences for the built environment, particularly for homeowners. It is related to the third sustainable development goal (SDG), which seeks to secure the health and well-being of people of all ages.
Originality/value
The study's uniqueness and usefulness are highlighted in the gaps between present house design culture and the reality of senior citizen occupants' dwellings, as well as the appropriateness to satisfy changing demands associated with old age. It would encourage homes to develop the culture and duty of providing a sustainable home that is accessible to everybody and provides emotional and physical safety for the elderly.

Abstract
We describe a holistic approach to promoting school safety that merges an emphasis on student voice with staff training in restorative practices. We first describe current approaches to keeping schools safe based on the existing research literature. Given that most of these approaches rely on access to credible information about potential threats to school safety, we then discuss student voices as one critical source of information, especially at the middle and high school level. We report on a recently developed tool designed to encourage students to share threats to school safety they are aware of with adults. Initial testing identified potential barriers and facilitators to students' willingness to share information. We discuss teacher training in restorative practices as one approach that might address some of these barriers, including anti-snitching cultures in schools, students' lack of trust in adult responses to student-identified concerns, and punitive school climates. Based on recent work, we identify barriers and facilitators to implementing restorative practices in schools. We provide recommendations about potential strategies to merge student voice with school personnel's training in restorative practices to minimize peer victimization that can escalate into violent behavior.

Purpose
Evidence suggests that a growing number of consumers across the world are becoming more environmentally responsible in terms of their personal habits and lifestyles. In this paper, the authors aim to use both parametric and non-parametric econometric models to estimate Kuwaiti consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for environmental protection in Failaka island.
Design/methodology/approach
Contingent valuation methods based on log-logistic and log-normal regression models revealed that consumers in Kuwait are willing to pay a price premium of approximately 40 Kuwaiti dinars for environmental protection in Failaka island based on the double-bound dichotomous choice model.
Findings
Socio-economic variables have no significant influence on the respondent’s WTP. As expected income has a positive relationship with WTP and bid price has negative relationship with WTP to protect the environment in Failaka island.
Originality/value
This study highlight the fact that understanding consumers’ environmental-friendly behaviors may play an important role in formulating environmental policy changes to face complex problems as diverse as environmental pollution or environmental degradation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to predict the effects of magnetic field, heat and mass transfer and rotation on the peristaltic flow of an incompressible Newtonian fluid in a channel with compliant walls. The whole system is in a rotating frame of reference.
Design/methodology/approach
The governing equations of two-dimensional fluid have been simplified under long wavelength and low Reynolds number approximation. The solutions are carried out for the stream function, temperature, concentration field, velocity and heat transfer coefficient.
Findings
The results indicate that the effects of permeability, magnetic field and rotation are very pronounced in the phenomena. Impacts of various involved parameters appearing in the solutions are carefully analyzed.
Originality/value
The effect of the concentration distribution, heat and mass transfer and rotation on the wave frame is analyzed theoretically and computed numerically. Numerical results are given and illustrated graphically in each case considered. A comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of rotation, magnetic field and heat and mass transfer.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the peristaltic flow of a Jeffrey fluid in an asymmetric channel, subjected to gravity field and rotation in the presence of a magnetic field. The channel asymmetry is produced by choosing the peristaltic wave train on the walls to have different amplitude and phase. The flow is investigated in a wave frame of reference moving with the velocity of the wave. Involved problems are analyzed through long wavelength and low Reynolds number.
Design/methodology/approach
The analytical expressions for the pressure gradient, pressure rise, stream function, axial velocity and shear stress have been obtained. The effects of Hartmann number, the ratio of relaxation to retardation times, time-mean flow, rotation, the phase angle and the gravity field on the pressure gradient, pressure rise, streamline, axial velocity and shear stress are very pronounced and physically interpreted through graphical illustrations. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the asymmetric and symmetric channels.
Findings
The results indicate that the effect of the Hartmann number, the ratio of relaxation to retardation times, time-mean flow, rotation, the phase angle and the gravitational field are very pronounced in the phenomena.
Originality/value
In the present work, the authors investigate gravity field, and rotation through an asymmetric channel in the presence of a magnetic field has been analyzed. It also deals with the effect of the magnetic field and gravity field of peristaltic transport of a Jeffrey fluid in an asymmetric rotating channel.

Purpose
The fiber orientation is considered one of the important parameters that have an effect on the characteristics of composites. This paper aims to investigate the effect of fiber orientation on the abrasive wear of the glass-epoxy (G-E) composites with different silicon carbide (SiC) filler weights (Wt.%).
Design/methodology/approach
The wear rate of glass fiber reinforced with angle-ply 0º, ±45º and 90º is discussed. The G-E composites with different weights of SiC filler at angle ±45º are considered. Hand lay-up technique was adopted for specimen preparation. The influence of effective parameters such as filler Wt. %, normal load, abrasive size and abrading distance on the wear rate was presented and discussed.
Findings
Experimental tests including pin on disk, micro-hardness and scanning electron microscope were carried out to investigate the composite characteristics.
Originality/value
The experimental results showed that the resistance wear was superior in case of ±45º fiber orientations. A validation of the experimental results using Taguchi approach to verify the optimal wear rate parameters was presented.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the phenomenon of climate variability and its implications for pastoralists and agro-pastoralists food security in Amibara and Awash Fentale districts of the Afar region, Ethiopia.
Design/methodology/approach
The study relied on meteorological records of temperature and rainfall in the study area between 1988 and 2018. Besides, literature on the topic was reviewed to make caveats on the literal picture that comes from quantitative data, and that is the contribution of this study to the existing debate on climate change and variability. The spatiotemporal trend was determined using the Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator, while variability was analyzed using the coefficient of variation and standardized anomaly index, and standardized precipitation index/standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index were applied to determine the drought frequency and severity.
Findings
The result reveals that the mean seasonal rainfall varies from 111.34 mm to 518.74 mm. Although the maximum and minimum rainfall occurred in the summer and winter seasons, respectively, there has been a decrease in seasonal and annual at the rate of 2.51 mm per season and 4.12 mm per year, respectively. The study sites have been experiencing highly seasonal rainfall variability. The drought analysis result confirms that a total of nine agricultural droughts ranging from moderate to extreme years were observed. Overall, the seasonal and annual rainfall of the Amibara and Awash Fentale districts showed a decreasing trend with highly temporal variations of rainfall and ever-rising temperatures, and frequent drought events means the climate situation of the area could adversely affect pastoral and agro-pastoral households’ food security. However, analysis of data from secondary sources reveals that analyzing precipitation just based on the meteorological records of the study area would be misleading. That explains why flooding, rather than drought, is becoming the main source of catastrophe to pastoral and agro-pastoral livelihoods.
Practical implications
The analysis of temperature and rainfall dynamics in the Afar region, hence the inception of all development interventions, must take the hydrological impact of the neighboring regions which appears to be useful direction to future researchers.
Originality/value
The research is originally conducted using meteorological and existing literature, and hence, it is original. In this research, we utilized a standardized and appropriate methodology, resulting in insights that augment the existing body of knowledge within the field. These insights serve to advance scholarly discourse on the subject matter.
