The Seminar for the International Exchange of Publications in the Indo‐Pacific Area, inspired by Unesco and sponsored by the National Diet Library of Japan, was held at Tokyo from 4 November to 11 November, 1957. There were no less than thirty‐two participants, delegates, and observers, from the following countries: Australia, Cambodia, Ceylon, Chile, the Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Laos, Malaya, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the United States of Soviet Russia. Almost all the participating countries deputed librarians of standing to represent them. Among them were Mr. Foster E. Mohrhardt, Director of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Library, Mr. Jennings Wood, Assistant Chief Director, Exchange and Gifts Division of the Library of Congress, Mr. Boris Kanevsky, Chief Librarian, Dept. of International Exchange of Publications of the Lenin State Library, Dr. H. L. White, Librarian, Commonwealth National Library, Canberra, and Dr. Armando Sandoval, Director, Centro de Documentacion Cientifica y Technica de Mexico.

I HAVE sometimes been asked whether I am conscious, as the present editor of THE LIBRARY WORLD, of the spirit and influence of its founder, James Duff Brown, and of his editorial successors, who included J. D. Stewart and W. C. Berwick Sayers. The answer is that of course I am—how could it be otherwise?

The concept of smart city has been adopted by various cities across the world. As urbanization is enlarging at a flying pace, the number of cities that engage the smart city concept is to rise, including in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This chapter discusses issues related to the development of (Islamic) smart cities in the GCC countries to create sustainable well-being through ecological and environmental resilience. This issue starts from the conflict between economic and human development on the one hand and ecological and environmental resilience on the other hand as one of the fundamental challenges of sustainable development. The higher the Human Development Index (HDI),, the higher the ecological footprint. Likewise, in the GCC region, all member countries are classified as Very High Human Development; however, all of these countries have a high ecological footprint. Therefore, through a literature study, this chapter focuses on investigating the development of (Islamic) smart cities in the GCC countries in reducing ecological footprints through a circular economy innovation with the support of technology and a digitally-enabled community in creating ecological and environmental resilience. This chapter provides valuable insight into the implementation of the (Islamic) smart cities in the GCC region in taking a global strategic role in green transition through the circular economy to transform their region toward sustainable well-being and become a symbol of sustainable smart global Islamic civilization.

This research aims to explore the significance of cooperative efforts in promoting financial participation to enhance the socio-economic empowerment of the rural Muslims.

The primary study with a structured questionnaire has been conducted taking a sample of 398 rural Muslim respondents from various rural regions of south India through proportionate stratified sampling techniques. Regression analysis, paired sample t-test and structural equation modelling (SEM) through statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) 26 & SPSS analysis of moment structures (AMOS) 23 software have been implemented to test the relationship.

The research outcome demonstrated a remarkable difference in the rural Muslim’s socio-economic conditions before and after availing the loans from cooperatives. Consequently, an extension of cooperative efforts widens the scope of financial participation which again has positively enhanced rural Muslim’s socio-economic empowerment.

This study will help various policymakers, academicians and communities to take necessary action for the upliftment of a particular community. The research further adds on to the existing research on the need and importance of cooperative efforts as an alternative finance for marginalised community in developing and emerging countries.

The result of this study is only confined to south India, posing a limitation for the study. Apart from the geographical restriction, the study solemnly covers the rural Muslim community extracting other sections of the society. Hence, for more generalisable pictures of the current results, further research is recommended from other stakeholders’ perspectives.

In this chapter, the integration of diverse discussions from preceding chapters converges into a comprehensive exploration of four pivotal challenges facing Islamic finance both presently and in the future. The chapter systematically addresses these challenges, commencing with a focused analysis on augmenting the role of Islamic finance in fostering financial inclusion. It scrutinizes innovative strategies to broaden access to financial services. Moving forward, the narrative navigates the intricate intersection of Islamic finance and sustainability, unraveling the potential synergy between these two domains and their collective contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The exploration extends to the realm of digitalization, probing how modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain can serve as catalysts for the progression of Islamic finance. Finally, the chapter delves into the imperative of harmonizing the Islamic financial industry (IFI), tackling challenges and proposing solutions to enhance uniformity and coherence in practices. These nuanced discussions not only address contemporary challenges but also underscore their critical role in achieving the SDGs and aligning with the targets of the Paris Agreement by 2030, providing valuable insights for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers in the field of Islamic finance.

This study aims to propose a productive waqf-based financing model for the livestock sector by optimizing idle waqf land owned by Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) for livestock breeding and fattening projects. Most pesantrens are established on waqf land and are located in rural areas with great potential for implementing waqf-based livestock projects.

The authors conducted a critical review on the models of waqf-based empowerment and financing for the livestock, agriculture or agribusiness sectors. Then, a proposed model was designed focused on livestock sector by using waqf land owned by pesantren. To strengthen the proposed model, the authors held a focus group discussion (FGD) by inviting regulators, academics, practitioners/consultants in animal husbandry, waqf, pesantren and economic empowerment.

Pesantren as nazhir of waqf land can cooperate with baitul maal wat tamwil (BMT) acting as nazhir of cash waqf to form a breeders’ cooperative as the vehicle to carry out the process of producing and fattening cattle. The project is performed under a mudharaba, musharakah or ijara contract, which is supervised by pesantren and BMT.

This research is based on the Indonesian context due to it is influenced by country-specific conditions. Even so, some of the findings in this study can still be adopted by waqf asset managers in other Muslim countries, which also have potential in terms of the number of pesantren and waqf assets.

The proposed model can improve the quality of life of the poor in remote areas by fulfilling the demand for beef consumption accompanied by sustainable economic empowerment.

This research focuses on solving the problem of meeting basic needs for beef by optimizing productive waqf in the livestock sector by involving the role of pesantren, which still needs to be discovered in the literature on the use of waqf land.

This study aims to investigate the micropolar fluid flow through a moving flat plate containing CoFe₂O₄-TiO₂ hybrid nanoparticles with the substantial influence of thermophoresis particle deposition and viscous dissipation.

The partial differential equations are converted to the similarity equations of a particular form through the similarity variables. Numerical outcomes are computed by applying the built-in program bvp4c in MATLAB. The process of flow, heat and mass transfers phenomena are examined for several physical aspects such as the hybrid nanoparticles, micropolar parameter, the thermophoresis particle deposition and the viscous dissipation.

The friction factor, heat and mass transfer rates are higher with an increment of 1.4%, 2.2% and 1.4%, respectively, in the presence of the hybrid nanoparticles (with 2% volume fraction). However, they are declined because of the rise of the micropolar parameter. The imposition of viscous dissipation reduces the heat transfer rate, significantly. Meanwhile, thermophoresis particle deposition boosts the mass transfer. Multiple solutions are developed for a certain range of physical parameters. Lastly, the first solution is shown to be stable and reliable physically.

As far as the authors have concerned, no work on thermophoresis particle deposition of hybrid nanoparticles on micropolar flow through a moving flat plate with viscous dissipation effect has been reported in the literature. Most importantly, this current study reported the stability analysis of the non-unique solutions and, therefore, fills the gap of the study and contributes to new outcomes in this particular problem.

The main purpose of this review was to synthesize pre-service teachers' digital self-efficacy in the context of education 5.0 and to identify the elements that affect pre-service teacher's digital self-efficacy and preparedness for future technologies. A systematic review approach was employed to analyze the 22 articles about the pre-service teachers' digital self-efficacy of in the paradigm of education 5.0. The review was conducted from 2012 to 2022 following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. In this study, PICO model was used in framing research questions. The findings of the review revealed that limited study has been carried out in the context of digital self-efficacy in the context of education 5.0. It was found that previous studies were only focusing general digital self-efficacy through traditional ways. Moreover, findings revealed there is lack of research on digital self-efficacy pre-service teachers in the realm of education 5.0 paradigm in the literature. More specifically, the results revealed that implementation of education 5.0 into teacher preparation programmes faces numerous challenges, including a lack of technological approach, poor digital infrastructure, the digital divide, a paucity of professional training opportunities for teachers and a lack of importance in policies. This synthesis of the literature review has practical implications for pre-service teachers along with policymakers. Pre-service teachers are required to increase their digital skills for the reason that they could teach the advanced generation. The policymakers can revisit and update the curriculum to incorporate education 5.0 principles in the teacher education programmes. This comprehensive review helps to better understand the pre-service teachers' digital self-efficacy towards education 5.0 and contributes to the body of existing knowledge on digital self-efficacy. Moreover, this study gives valuable insights on the incorporation of education 5.0.

The primary aim of this study is to explore challenges and prospects of Islamic banking system in non-Muslim states to foster regulatory frameworks of the system.

Content analysis as an integral part of qualitative research was used. Secondary data through the exploration of cursory literature was taken into consideration.

The findings identified three prime challenges, namely, regulatory, operational and institutional, which are impeding the smooth activities and performances of Islamic banks in using innovative Islamic products and services that can favourably compete with products and services of conventional banking system in non-Muslim states. In addition, strengthening the adoption and performance of Islamic banking in non-Muslim states can efficiently and effectively address the identified and multifarious regulatory, operational and institutional challenges to achieve financial inclusion and overall economic growth.

Challenges encountered and prodigies or potentials of operating Islamic banking system by most of non-Muslim countries remains a pivotal aspect that needs research attention in the recent.

Nonetheless, the limitation of this study is that the study relies on the use of secondary data. However, it has provided a substantial direction for future studies in empirically exploring the variables of this study.

Indeed, 19th century was a remarkable turning point in the development and expansion of Islamic banking system in the Muslim world. Many predominant Muslim countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, among others have been efficiently and effectively operating Islamic banking system within the framework of Islamic legal provisions. Many non-Muslim countries such as Australia, the UK, USA, etc., have also adopted Islamic banking system.

It is noted that policy directions of the study among others should address the regulatory frameworks that is Shari’ah-compliant in the operation of Islamic banking system in non-Muslim states. It is therefore suggested that the policymakers, Islamic financial experts and regulators should use the innovation that could bring competitiveness into the operation of Islamic banking system in non-Muslim states.
