Abstract

The analysis of multiconductor transmission lines excited by an electromagnetic field is investigated here by the use of the wavelet expansion. The exciting field is taken into account considering its contribution in terms of equivalent distributed voltage and current along the line. The resulting equations are expanded in the wavelet domain on both the variables (space and time), leading to an algebraic system in a Lyapunov form which is solved by the use of standard techniques.

Abstract

In this paper, a hybrid formulation for solving time harmonic eddy current problems in terms of magnetic field h is considered. In particular, we discuss some properties of the implicit boundary condition on the discrete level and the computation of the integral operator exploited in this context. An iterative technique is confirmed to be efficient in solving the arising, partly dense, complex linear system of equations. Furthermore, some test results, including timings for linear solvers are presented.

Abstract

Introduces papers from this area of expertise from the ISEF 1999 Proceedings. States the goal herein is one of identifying devices or systems able to provide prescribed performance. Notes that 18 papers from the Symposium are grouped in the area of automated optimal design. Describes the main challenges that condition computational electromagnetism’s future development. Concludes by itemizing the range of applications from small activators to optimization of induction heating systems in this third chapter.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to supply a numerical analysis tool to solve eddy currents induced in nonlinear materials such as steel by boundary element method (BEM), and then apply it to design and analysis of power devices.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing integral formulas derived on the basis of rapid attenuation of the electromagnetic fields, the paper formulates eddy currents in steel. In the formulation, nonlinear terms are regarded as virtual sources, which are improved iteratively with the electromagnetic fields on the surface. The periodic electromagnetic fields are expanded in Fourier series and each harmonic is analyzed by BEM. The surface and internal electromagnetic fields are obtained numerically one after the other until convergence by the Newton‐Raphson method.

Findings

It is confirmed that this approach gives accurate solutions with meshes much larger than the skin depth and therefore is adequate to apply to a large‐scale application.

Research limitations/implications

The eddy current is formulated by utilizing the impedance boundary condition in order to meet a large‐scale application, and so solutions near the edge are poor. In the case of better solutions being required, some modifications are necessary.

Originality/value

To lessen computer memory consumption, the parallel component of the currents to the steel surface is analyzed as a 2D problem and the normal component is obtained from the parallel component. One 2D equation for one analyzing region is discretized by dividing the region into layers adaptively and then solved. Next, another is solved sequentially. This method gives a compatible numerical analysis tool with finite element method.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce an aid for teaching transverse flux permanent magnet machines (TFPMs) with emphasis on their torque production.

Design/methodology/approach

The Lorentz force law is applied to fictitious current loops emulating the permanent magnets (PMs) mounted on the rotor according to different arrangements; the air gap flux density is created by the armature current.

Findings

Implemented in a master lecture on special AC machines, the proposed approach has revealed a renewed interest in electromagnetic fundamentals for pedagogical purposes. It makes simple the explanation of the principle of operation of a class of AC machines reputed by the complexity of their magnetic circuits. The latter incorporates axially stacked decoupled sub-circuits, one per phase generating alternating magnetic fields. More specifically, there is common air gap, shared by the machine phases, in which a rotating magnetic field is created by the superposition of the PM contribution and the armature one.

Research limitations/implications

Accounting for the complexity of the magnetic circuits and the three-dimensional (3D) flux paths characterizing TFPMs, a 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is required for the validation of the analytical predictions. Nevertheless, such a 3D FEA validation is far from being obvious to be carried on within a master lecture.

Originality/value

While the basis of Lorentz forces resulting from fictitious current loops emulating PMs has been considered in some referenced papers, its simple and pedagogical application to assess the torque production of several TFPM concepts represents the added value of the present paper.

Abstract

In this paper an integral formulation for the analysis of systems with moving conductors has been extended to take into account the presence of sliding contacts. The proposed formulation results in the equilibrium equations of an equivalent electric network whose elements vary with the position of the conductors. The phenomena occurring at the interface between conductors involved in sliding contacts have been investigated by the introduction of an auxiliary electric network. The formulation has been applied to the electromechanical analysis of a rail launcher. Because of the short operating times involved in these devices the thermal behaviour has been taken into account by a simple adiabatic model; the temperature distribution obtained is used to update the resistivity of the elements of the network produced by the integral formulation. The results of the simulations show the capability of the model to take into account the characteristic phenomena of these devices.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a hybrid model to mid-term forecast the load of transmission substations based on the knowledge of expert site and multi-objective posterior framework. The main important challenges in load forecasting are the different behavior of load in specific days. Regular days, holidays and special holidays, days after a holidays and days of load shifting are characterized by abnormal load profiles. The knowledge of these days is verified by expert operators in regional dispatching centers.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a hybrid model for power prediction of transmission substations based on the combination of similar day selection and multi-objective posterior technique has been proposed. In the first step, the important data for prediction is provided. Posterior method is used in the second step for prediction that it is based on kernel functions. A multi-objective optimization has been formulated with three type of output accuracy measurement function that it is solved by non-dominated sorting genetic technique II (NSGT-II) method. TOPSIS way is used to find the best point of Pareto.

Findings

The presented method has been tested in four scenarios for three different transmission stations, and the test results have been compared. The presented results indicate that the presentation method has better results and is robust to different load characteristics, which can be used for better forecasting of different stations for better planning of repairs and network operation.

Originality/value

The main contributions of this paper can be categorized as follows: A hybrid model based on similar days selection and multi-objective framework posterior is presented. Similar day selection is done by expert site that the day type and days with scheduled repair are considered. Hyperparameters of posterior process are found by NSGT-II based on TOPSIS method.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a double-sided switched reluctance linxear generator (DSRLG) exclusively for wave power generation. The initial dimensions are given through design experience and principles. To ameliorate comprehensive performance of the DSRLG, the multi-objective optimization design is processed.

Design/methodology/approach

The multi-objective optimization design of the DSRLG is processed by adopting a modified entropy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) algorithm. First, sensitivity analyzes on geometric parameters of the DSRLG are conducted to determine several pivotal geometric parameters as optimization variables. Then, the multi-objective optimization is conducted on the basis of initial dimensions. After determination of synthetical evaluation value of each structure parameter, the best dimension scheme of the DSRLG is concluded.

Findings

After verification by finite element method simulation and dynamic simulation, the final dimension scheme proves to perform better than the initial scheme. Finally, experiments are conducted to verify the accuracy of both the stable finite element DSRLG model and dynamic simulation system model so that the conclusion of this paper proves to be reliable and compelling.

Originality/value

This paper proposes an improved structure of the DSRLG, which is superior for wave power generation. Meanwhile, a novel modified entropy TOPSIS algorithm is applied to the field of electrical machine multi-objective optimal design for the first time.
