Abstract

Purpose

One of the major contributions of the literature on human capital has been to demonstrate the role of schooling as a determinant of wages. However, the exact size of the effect on wages and how it should be estimated remain a source of both theoretical and empirical debate. This paper seeks to provide empirical evidence on the returns to education for the Spanish labor market.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses the instrumental variable approach proposed by Hausman and Taylor to assess the direction and size of the bias that affects standard OLS estimation, when some of the wage determinants are endogenous.

Findings

The results suggest that the returns to schooling are substantially higher once endogeneity is taken into account, rising from around 6 percent for each additional year of schooling to about 12 percent when the effect is estimated via instrumental variables. This is in line with research for other countries. Evidence is also found of endogeneity in the effect of job seniority, although in the opposite direction. That is, the Hausman and Taylor model finds little effect of seniority on wages, whereas OLS estimates suggest a larger effect.

Research limitations/implications

Further research is needed to reconcile these results (downwards bias in the OLS estimate of the returns to schooling) with the theoretical notion of an upwards bias caused by the correlation between unobservable ability, wages and schooling.

Originality/value

The paper adds new evidence on wage determinants for the Spanish labor market and does so for men and women using alternative estimation procedures.

Abstract

Equal treatment for men and women is an important objective of labour policy in the European Union, largely because there is ample evidence of gender discrimination in the wages of men and women, which are on an average higher for male workers. Research on male‐female wage differentials provides evidence of a substantial wage differential favouring men after adjusting for human capital and personal characteristics such as education, age, job tenure, and labour force intermittency. However, few studies take into account the role that job mobility plays in this differential, despite its demonstrated importance in explaining the earnings profile of workers. This paper estimates gender wage differentials for workers who switch jobs and those who keep them in order to see whether job mobility enlarges or reduces the gender gap. The study uses microdata relative to Spanish workers gathered from the Households Panel Study (1994‐1997), conducted by the Spanish National Statistics Institute.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidence on gender wage discrimination and how it is distributed among women in the Spanish labour market, where female participation has been rising for decades. The empirical approach aims to assess to which extent discrimination is evenly distributed or not among women, and how different subgroups of workers are affected by it.

Design/methodology/approach

Using data from the Spanish section of the European Community Household Panel (1994-2001) the authors estimate earnings equations for men and women using the instrumental variable (IV) method proposed by Hausman and Taylor (1981). This aims to avoid biases resulting from endogeneity of regressors. Building on these results, the authors follow the proposal of Jenkins (1994) and estimate a bivariate wage distribution for women, containing individual expected earnings with and without discrimination.

Findings

The results show that discrimination is distributed unevenly across female workers and that the degree to which women are discriminated against grows as they move upward in the wage distribution. Also, when wage determinants are allowed to be endogenous, the results experience drastic changes, both in average and distributional terms.

Research limitations/implications

The results point to a “glass ceiling” operating on female earnings and also show that endogeneity of human capital should be taken into account when analysing discrimination. Therefore, more empirical evidence in this line would be welcome.

Originality/value

By using IV estimation of wages, the authors control for the existence of endogeneity in earnings equations. Also, the authors provide unexplained wage differentials for particular groups of female wage earners, specially according to education, experience and job tenure.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) on corporate financial performance (CFP) in firms headquartered in developed versus emerging countries. Drawing upon stakeholder and legitimacy perspectives, the authors argue that the CSR/CSI–CFP relationship differs depending on the home-countries’ level of economic development as this reflects their different sensitivity to sustainability. Indeed, as emerging economies are normally characterized by weaker regulations, they are likely to place lower pressures on companies for superior CSR practices. Therefore, the authors expect the effect of CSR on CFP to be more positive for firms headquartered in advanced than in emerging countries. At the same time, the authors propose a more negative relationship between CSI and CFP for firms headquartered in developed countries due to the higher overall sustainability expectations required to gain legitimacy. The empirical analyses, run on a sample of 1,971 publicly listed firms between 2010 and 2020 from developed and emerging economies, support the expectations, thus confirming that country-specific contextual factors do play a role in shaping both the positive and the negative impact of CSR and CSI on CFP, and that the reactions of stakeholders to responsible and irresponsible behavior are stronger when their sensitivity to sustainability is higher.

Abstract

Purpose

To influence consumer pre-purchase decision-making processes, such as brand selection and perceived brand experience, brands are interested in adopting hyperconnected technological stimuli, such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality, social media and tech devices. However, the understanding of different hyperconnected touchpoints remained shallow and results mixed in previous literature, despite the fact that these touchpoints span different technological interfaces/devices and may influence consumer brand selection. This paper aims to solidify the conceptual underpinnings of the role of online hyperconnected stimuli, which may influence consumer psychological reactions in terms of brand selection and experience.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is conceptual and presents a discussion based on extant literature from various international publishers.

Findings

The authors revealed different technological stimuli in the online hyperconnected environment that may influence consumer online hyperconnected brand selection (OHBS), perceived online hyperconnected brand experience (OHBE), perceived well-being and behavioral intention.

Originality/value

The conceptual understanding of OHBS and perceived OHBE was mixed and inconsistent in previous studies. This paper brings together extant literature to establish the conceptual understanding of antecedents and outcomes of OHBS, i.e. perceived OHBE, perceived well-being and behavioral intention, and presents a cohesive conceptual framework.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to organize and analyze the existing literature on co-creation in tourism to identify the state-of-the-art studies and the research gap in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

As the research questions seek to provide an overview of the studies in the available literature, the systematic mapping study (SMS) has been selected as the research method. A suitable mapping study method for analyzing and structuring a broad research field concerning methods, designs and research focuses on the existing publications. In total, 137 articles published during 2006–2019 in reliable academic databases such as Science Direct, Emerald, Scopus, Wiley, ProQuest, Sage, Web of Science and Taylor and Francis were selected and analyzed.

Findings

The results show a rising trend of published articles in tourism, with the maximum number published in 2019 and the minimum number in 2006. Also, analysis of input articles revealed that most of the studies focused on the antecedents and prerequisites for co-creation and paid less attention to the co-creation context. Other findings show that in the field of tourism, the hospitality sector, especially hotels have paid special attention to co-creation. The majority of papers were the empirical type with quantitative design. Furthermore, most studies used the survey method, while the case study and other methods were the next choices.

Originality/value

This study addresses a major research gap by summarizing the literature related to value co-creation with a specific focus on tourism using the SMS method that provides an overview of the studies in this field. Categorizing papers through SMS helps researchers to review the status of studies in a visual summary to identify gaps and directions for future research.

El propósito de este estudio de cartográfico es organizar y analizar los artículos existentes sobre la co-creación en la industria del turismo a fin de identificar los últimos estudios y la brecha de investigación en este campo.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

El método de Estudio de Mapeo Sistemático (SMS) ha sido seleccionado como método de investigación debido a que el objeto de los temas cuestionados en este estudio es proporcionar una visión general en cuanto a las investigaciones hechas hasta hoy. El método de estudio de mapeo, centrándose en las publicaciones existentes, es un método adecuado para analizar y estructurar un amplio campo de investigación sobre maneras, diseños e investigaciones. Se seleccionaron y analizaron 137 artículos publicados durante los años 2006–2019 en bases de datos académicas confiables como Science Direct, Emerald, Scopus, Wiley, ProQuest, Sage, Web of Science y Taylor & Francis.

Resultados

Los resultados muestran una tendencia al alza de los artículos publicados sobre el turismo, con el número máximo publicado en el año 2019 y el número mínimo en 2006. Además, el análisis de los artículos existentes en las bases, reveló que la mayoría de los estudios se han centrado en los antecedentes y requisitos previos para la co-creación y se ha enfocado menos en el concepto de co-creación. Otros hallazgos muestran que en el campo del turismo y la hostelería, se ha prestado especial atención a la co-creación. La mayoría de los trabajos eran de tipo empírico con diseño cuantitativo. Asimismo, la mayoría de los estudios han utilizado el método de encuesta, mientras que el estudio monográfico y otros métodos han sido las siguientes opciones.

Originalidad/valor

Resumiendo los artículos relacionados con la creación conjunta de valores, con un enfoque específico en la industria del turismo, y utilizando el método SMS que proporciona una visión general de los estudios en este campo, este estudio aborda una brecha de investigación importante. La categorización de documentos usando el método SMS ayuda a los investigadores a revisar el estado de los estudios en un resumen visual para identificar vacíos y direcciones para futuras investigaciones.

Abstract

Purpose

This work contributes to the debate on the link between environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria and firm innovation, incorporating ownership structure as a moderating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses ordinary least squares (OLS) regression to analyse the impact of ESG criteria on innovation, considering firm ownership as a catalyst that strengthens the effect of environmental and social practices on innovative performance.

Findings

Family-owned firms, with their unique characteristics like long-term orientation and commitment to family values, strengthen the relationship between environmental and social practices and innovation performance. This suggests that such firms are better positioned to leverage their corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments and activities.

Practical implications

The findings offer valuable insights for decision-making in organizations, particularly family firms focused on innovation and sustainability. The research shows that investing in sustainability practices not only ensures ESG compliance but also significantly fosters innovation.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the debate regarding the relationship between ESG criteria and firm innovative performance. It highlights how the implementation of ESG practices influences innovation, and particularly how firm ownership further enhances the relationship between environmental and social practices and firm innovative performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to better understand consumer's familiarity with fruit processing as well as how fruit production conditions (organic and conventional farming), processing conditions (homemade, artisanal and industrial) and the type of processing (e.g. applesauce, apple cider and apple sorbet) influence consumer perceptions of processed fruits.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey questionnaire was applied to 1,000 people living in France. The people represented different genders, ages (18–60+) and sociodemographic categories. Participants were categorized based on their produce purchasing habits (conventional, local, organic, local-organic). The questionnaire contained multiple choice and five point Likert scale questions. Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests.

Findings

The authors found that participants saw year-round availability, fruit preservation and food waste reduction as processing advantages. Locally sourced products were preferred to organic products. The perceived disadvantages to processing were additive usage, nutrient loss and packaging. For consumers, these disadvantages drove highly differentiated perceptions of industrial versus artisanal/homemade apple products. Processing conditions appeared to matter far more than production conditions (organic vs. conventional). In general, consumers weren't familiar with processing operations, awareness was greater for consumers of local and/or organic produce than conventional consumers.

Social implications

There must be a societal transition toward healthier diets, and food technologies. Informed consumers, might be better equipped to make healthy, informed choices if the consumers are given quality information about food production and processing at different levels.

Originality/value

Research has shown that consumers view fresh organic fruit positively, but only few studies have looked at perceptions of processed fruit products and their familiarity with processing operations. Results of this study demonstrate that consumers could make better choices if the consumers are given quality information about fruit production and processing.

Abstract

Purpose

Food manufacturing supply chain systems are the most relevant wheels of the world economy since they provide essential products supporting daily life. Nevertheless, various supply inefficiencies have been reported to compromise food safety in different regions. Sustainable supplier management and digitalization practices have become cornerstone activities in addressing these shortcomings. Therefore, this paper proposes an integrated method for sustainability management in digital manufacturing supply chain systems (DMSCS) from the food industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The Intuitionistic Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (IF-AHP) was used to weigh the criteria and subcriteria under uncertainty. Second, the Intuitionistic Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) was applied to determine the main DMSCS sustainability drivers whilst incorporating the expert's hesitancy. Finally, the Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) was implemented to pinpoint the weaknesses hindering DMSCS sustainability. A case study from the pork supply chain was presented to validate this method.

Findings

The most important criterion for DMSCS sustainability management is “location” while “manufacturing capacity” is the most significant dispatcher.

Originality/value

This paper presents a novel approach integrating IF-AHP, IF-DEMATEL, and CoCoSo methods for sustainability management of DMSCS pillaring the food industry.
