Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an incremental graph indexing method based on probabilistic inferences in Bayesian network (BN) for approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS) that adds unindexed queries into the graph index incrementally.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first uses the attention mechanism based graph convolutional network to embed a social network into the low-dimensional vector space, which could improve the efficiency of graph index construction. To add the unindexed queries into the graph index incrementally, this study proposes to learn the rule-based BN from social interactions. Thus, the dependency relations of unindexed queries and their neighbors are represented, and the probabilistic inferences in BN are then performed.

Findings

Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method improves the search precision by at least 5% and search efficiency by 10% compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a novel method to construct the incremental graph index based on probabilistic inferences in BN, such that both indexed and unindexed queries in ANNS could be addressed efficiently.

Abstract

Purpose

Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus is a gram-negative predatory bacterium which can potentially inhibit microbiologically influenced corrosion by preying on sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). However, no researches about the inhibition are reported according to the authors’ knowledge. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the Inhibition effect of B. bacteriovorus on the corrosion of X70 pipeline steel induced by SRB.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of B. bacteriovorus on the growth of SRB was studied by measuring the optical density at 600 nm (OD600) and sulfate concentration in culture medium. X70 pipeline steel was used as the test material to investigate the anti-corrosion effect of B. bacteriovorus on SRB by conducting electrochemical analysis (including Tafel polarization curves and electrochemical impendence spectroscopy) and weight loss measurement.

Findings

B. bacteriovorus could inhibit the growth of SRB in culture medium by its predation on SRB, which led to decrease of OD600 value and increase of sulfate concentration. The results of electrochemical analysis indicated that B. bacteriovorus had positive inhibition efficiencies on SRB-induced corrosion of X70 pipeline steel. Moreover, corrosion rate of X70 pipeline steel was declined from 19.17 to 3.75 mg·dm-2·day-1 by the presence of B. bacteriovorus.

Originality/value

This is the first report about using B. bacteriovorus to inhibit the corrosion induced by SRB. Compared to other anti-corrosion methods, the microbial inhibition methods exhibit more considerable application value due to its low cost, high efficiency and non-pollution.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent decades, related party transactions have been assailed by scholars and regulation authorities since related parties of a listed company may “tunnel” its resources, damaging the interests of other stakeholders. One kind of “tunneling” is capital impropriation, which is common but harmful in an emerging market where investor protection is weak. In contrast, a listed company may also impropriate capitals from its controlling business group or related parties reported as accrued liabilities in the financial statement of the listed company, which can be regarded as the “supporting hand” from related parties. Thus, the capital impropriation may be bidirectional. In fact, the capital impropriation is a financing behavior with low cost, and it can provide necessary working capital for some firms and reduce that for the other. Since the working capital is an important part of the firm's stock of capital, which can relax firms' short‐run financing constraints, it may significantly influence firms' capital investment behaviors. Therefore, how does the bilateral capital impropriation influences the capital investment of listed firms?

Design/methodology/approach

Using the data of Chinese listed firms in 2005 and 2006, this paper empirically investigates the effect of bidirectional capital impropriation on listed firms' capital investment efficiency.

Findings

Receivable items like accounting receivable or other accruals that related parties owe to the listed firms will reduce the capital expenditure of listed companies and reduce the sensitivity of investment‐cash flow relation. Actually, capital impropriation by listed firms may stimulate their capital investments and increase the sensitivity of investment‐cash since listed firms obtain capitals for future investments at a lower cost. In all, the bidirectional capital impropriation significantly affects the capital investment and sensitivity of investment‐cash flow of listed firms, and different direction of capital impropriation will lead to different investment efficiency. It should also be noted that capital impropriation is not necessarily something negative since it may sometimes reduce the overinvestment.

Originality/value

The paper provides more evidence to the capital investment of listed companies and identifies the factors influencing its efficiency from the perspective of bidirectional capital impropriation.

Abstract

Purpose

To study the photonic band‐gap (PBG) characteristics constructed by periodic conducting vias on various guided transmission‐line structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is adopted to analyze various PBG via structures. Conventionally, PBG characteristics on guided‐wave structures, such as microstrip lines or coplanar waveguides (CPW), are constructed through a series of perforations on the ground plane(s). PBG characteristics can, however, also be realized through periodic arrangements of conducting vias located on the respective ground planes.

Findings

Through studies of the scattering parameters, it has been found that all analyzed PBG via structures exhibit strong band‐gap characteristics in a particular frequency range. Different harmonic patterns are also observed when the dimensional sizes of the conducting vias vary with respect to the PBG period.

Research limitations/implications

Research has been mainly limited to study solely the PBG via structures, guided‐wave transmission lines. More studies may be conducted in analyzing the overall performance when they are combined with other microwave components.

Practical implications

The proposed PBG via structures can be applied to various microwave areas, ranging from signal suppressions in microelectronics and mobile communications, to electro‐magnetic interference studies in other practical electronic circuit structures.

Originality/value

The ideas of applying conducting vias on the guided‐wave transmission lines and the proposed via patterns to induce the PBG characteristics are the research's claim to originality one.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between supervisor‐perceived procedural justice and subordinate‐perceived procedural justice. The moderating roles of the subordinate‐perceived interactional justice and power‐distance value are also to be examined.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were obtained from 509 supervisor‐subordinate dyads in mainland China. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

Results revealed that: supervisor‐perceived procedural justice is positively related to subordinate‐perceived procedural justice; the direct relationship is stronger when the subordinate perceives higher rather than lower interactional justice from the supervisor; and the direct relationship is stronger when the subordinate holds a higher rather than lower power‐distance value.

Research limitations/implications

The data collected in the present study reside at two hierarchical levels, namely, the employee level and the supervisor level, and the sample size is relatively large. The results are thus less likely subject to common method bias. However, future longitudinal research will be helpful to lend stronger support for the hypothesized causal relationships.

Originality/value

The paper uses cognitive social learning theory in a social exchange context to explain the cross‐level relationship of procedural justice perceptions in organizations, and to identify its boundary conditions. Results support that fairness perceptions at a higher organizational level can be related to lower‐level perceptions along the organizational hierarchy.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to create and to study multifunctional shape memory polymer (SMP) composites having temperature-sensing and actuating capabilities by embedding thermochromic particles within the polymer matrix.

Design/methodology/approach

The multifunctional materials were fabricated following a process consisting of blending (of the thermochromic particles and the SMP at various ratios), mixing, degasing, moulding and thermal curing, prepared by incorporating thermochromic particles within the polymer. The effect of the thermochromic particles on the thermomechanical properties and thermally responsive shape memory effect of the resulting multifunction SMP composites were characterised and interpreted.

Findings

It was found that exposure of the composites to temperatures above 70°C led to a pronounced change of their colour that was recorded by the thermal and electrical actuation approaches and was reproducibly reversible. It was also found that the colour of the composites was independent of the mechanical state of the SMP. Such effects enabled monitoring of the onset of the set/release temperature of the SMP matrix. Furthermore, the combination of thermochromic additive and the SMP resulted in significantly improved thermomechanical strength, absorption of infrared radiation and the temperature distribution of the SMP composites.

Research limitations/implications

The temperature-sensing and actuating capabilities of the polymeric shape memory composites developed through this study will help to extend the field of potential applications of such composites to fields including sensors, actuators, security labels and information dissemination, where colour indication is an advantageous feature.

Originality/value

The SMP composites capable of temperature sensing and actuating are novel.

Abstract

Purpose

Anisotropic conductive film (ACF) offers miniaturization of package size, reduction in interconnection distance and high performance, cost‐competitive packaging and improved environmental impact. However, a major limitation for ACF is the instability caused by thermal warpage. The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of thermal warpage on contact resistance in real time i.e. make online measurements of contact resistance fluctuations while the assembly undergoes thermal shock.

Design/methodology/approach

The ACF assemblies are subjected to thermal cycling with different temperature profiles that have peak temperatures either below or above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the ACF. The flex substrate used was made of polyimide film, with Au/Ni/Cu electrodes and a daisy‐chained circuit matched to the die bump pattern. The ACF used was based on epoxy resin in which nickel and gold‐coated polymer particles are dispersed. A comparative study was carried out on the results obtained.

Findings

The results showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the ACF material plays an important role in the high temperature contact resistance. Above Tg, the ACF matrix becomes less viscous, which reduces its adhesive strength and allows the bumps on the chip to slide away from the pads on the substrate. Even though a flex substrate was used in this study, the sliding effect is severe at the corner bumps of the chip, where cumulative forces are generated due to the thermal expansion mismatch. For every thermal cycling profile, there is an incubation period encountered from this work that would have a significant impact in the application of ACF. After the incubation period the contact resistance increased rapidly and the assemblies were therefore no longer reliable.

Originality/value

The work in this paper focuses on contact resistance changes during thermal shock. The paper discusses the reliability issue of ACF during thermal warpage, which is useful to industries using ACF for flip‐chip assemblies.

Abstract

Purpose

Although the negative consequences of conflict in work settings have long been recognized, it is only in recent years that researchers have examined its positive effects, and the majority of this research has been conducted at the group level. This paper aims to examine the positive effects of conflict on individual work behaviors by differentiating between task and relationship conflicts, as well as the moderating influence of two contextual variables.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted with 166 pairs of supervisors and subordinates in China.

Findings

Results supported the hypotheses that task conflict is positively related to both innovative behaviors and knowledge sharing behaviors while relationship conflict is negatively related to both individual‐directed organizational citizenship and knowledge sharing behaviors. Support for innovation and reward system for relationship‐building functioned as contextual factors to moderate the relationships between task and relationship conflicts and the workplace behaviors studied.

Originality/value

The hypotheses proposed and most of the findings are original.

Abstract

Incentive policies have been emphasized by many governments as one of the major policy tools to promote economic development in their societies. For this paper I have examined the application of incentive policies in China to improve economic performance during China’s reform years. In the paper are theoretical reviews about various types of incentive policies and different arguments about their effects. The development of Chinese incentive policies is introduced and analysis of their achievements in improving economic growth and attracting foreign investment is presented. Challenging issues of incentive policies have been related to concerns about effectiveness and equity, accountability and transparency, as well as economic upgrade and balance. Implications of the Chinese development experience are provided for future study of incentive policies.

Abstract

Purpose

Coordinating low-carbonization and digitalization is a practical implementation pathway to achieve high-quality economic development. Regions are under great emission reduction pressure to achieve low-carbon development. However, why and how regional emission reduction pressure influences enterprise digital transformation is lacking in the literature. This study empirically tests the impact of emission reduction pressure on enterprise digital transformation and its mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

This article takes the data of non-financial listed companies from 2011 to 2020 as a sample. The digital transformation index is measured by entropy value method. The bidirectional fixed effect model was used to test the hypothesis.

Findings

The research results show that emission reduction pressure forces enterprise digital transformation. The mechanism lies in that emission reduction pressure improves digital transformation by promoting enterprise innovation, and digital economy moderates the nexus between emission reduction pressure and digital transformation. Furthermore, the effect of emission reduction pressure on digital transformation is more significant for non-state-owned, mature and high-tech enterprises.

Originality/value

This paper discusses the mediating role of enterprise innovation between carbon emission reduction pressure and enterprise digital transformation, as well as the moderating role of digital economy. The research expands the body of knowledge about dual carbon targets, digitization and technological innovation. The author’s findings help update the impact of regional digital economy development on enterprise digital transformation. It also provides theoretical guidance for the realization of digital transformation by enterprise innovation.
